The coiled GERESThe coiled GERES®® heat exchanger heat exchanger

Which solution does the GERES system offer?

Confronting depth delimitations, a solution until 35 m [115 ft] maximum depth Best utilization of the energy in the geology Robust pipe material Multi-purpose heat exchanger, can be used in a different medium as in the geology (see, river,

lake, sewage treatment plant) Low compression effort Low effort laying and connecting the pipes Facing volume delimitations - saving 60% glycol-mixture 100% impermeability against gases in the soil

This properties are the best investment protection, the reducing of guarantee risk, and best possible protection of the geology

Focus in the development of the systemFocus in the development of the system Which was the focus GERES® had in the development of the system?

1. Security: From the beginning GERES was looking for a composite pipe. Why? Applications of force or punctual pressure on the pipe

are well absorbed, because the pressure on the exterior layer is distributed on a larger surface in the next layer. Afurther characteristics of the pipe, it expands minimal under pressure and have no crack propagation.

The ground probe consists out of one pipe, which means you have no joints in the soil The ground probe is 100% impermeable against gases in the soil Die GERES®-ground probe can be sinked unfilled, which minimize the the arising forces during the sinking process and

prevent damages on the ground probe

2. Optimal energy absorption: Good thermal conductivity of the pipe By the coil form we achieve a turbulent-similar flow in the ground probe The coil of the ground probe is adjustable and thus you can adapt the ground probe to the individual geology to obtain

the optimal energy extraction By the spiral form, the influence of the “cold” conductor on the “heated” conductor is minimized

3. Optimization in the workflow: The GERES®-ground probe can be sinked unfilled For connecting pipes we use a press-fitting-system which make you independent from meteorological conditions Reducing the compression effort because the pipe expands under pressure very minimal The calculation of loss pressure is simplified because the ground probes have standard dimensions

The ground probe in the boreholeThe ground probe in the boreholeGERES®-ground probe (35 m - 115 ft) and additional weight

Parts of the ground probe:a) 1 x pipeb) Casted weightc) 1 x additional weight

Facts about the ground probe in the borehole: First 5 m [16 ft] no coils Between 5 m and 34 m [16 ft - 111.5 ft] coiled ground probe The coiled part of the ground probe is at the exterior part of the

borehole, which improve the energy absorption

Facts borehole (in some countries very relevant aspects for authorities): At the first 5 m [16 ft] are used 2 m [6.5 ft] pipe/meter Between 5 m and 34 m [16 ft - 111.5 ft], are used 2,75 m [9 ft]

pipe/meter Between the spreaded coils the grouting material can be better

distributed More grouting material as used at a Duplex ground probe, which makes

the filled borehole more stable The composite pipe expands very low under pressure, which cause less

motion in the filled and cured borehole and makes the cured boreholemore stable

By the spiral form is the ground probe more in the exterior part of theborehole which offer a more homogenous cured borehole, because ofthe more of grouting material in the interior of the borehole which isseamless connected to the grouting material between the coils unto theborehole wall

4 walls to the geology (3 layers of the composite pipe and the curedborehole)

1 pipe, no joints Minimal reciprocal influence Turbulent-similar flow Can be unfilled sinked 100% impermeability against gases

Comparing ground probe systemsComparing ground probe systems

A low thermal resistance in the drilled borehole, because the coiled segment is in theexterior part of the borehole.

A high thermal resistance in the drilled borehole, because the pipes are in themiddle of the borehole.

If the ground probe is sinked unfilled, the probability of scoring the pipes are very low.If the ground probe face resistance in the borehole, the force effect is on the exteriorlayer (PE-RT) of the pipe. The force effect will be forwarded in reduced form, on alarger surface on the second layer (Al). The Aluminum layer which also absorb a partof the received force, will forward a lower part of the received force, on a largersurface to the interior layer (PE-RT). [A common characteristic of composite materialsis to distribute the energy of arising forces on larger surfaces to incorporated layers. This characteristic prevent possible damages.] No score propagation.

The pipe-material is sensitive to notches , scoring and crack propagation.

8 x lower dilatation: 0,025 mm / (m*K)[0.00098*10-6 in / in *°F]

Coefficient of linear thermal Expansion: 0,20 mm / (m*K)[0.0787*10-6 in / in *°F]

The coiled part of the ground probe cross just with the exterior part of the pipe thesharp edges. If the ground probe is sinked unfilled, it will slide and rotate along theedges because there is no weight behind. Arising scratches can be 2-4 mm length atthe exterior part of the coiled part of the ground probe.

Sharp edges in the borehole can damage the pipe material, along a bigdistance, because the pipe cross the edges during the complete sinking.

The coils can be adjusted to the individual geology. Not adjustable to the geology.

100 % diffusion sealed against gases in the soil.Penetrable for gases in the soil.

Because of the coiled construction, a turbulent similar flow.Because of the construction, a laminar flow in the pipe.

Can be sinked without being filled. Can be sinked just filled.

Low reciprocal influence, because the coil is in the external area of the borehole. Thestraight pipe segment, in the interior of the coil, cross the coiled segment at 3-4points per meter.

Reciprocal influence.

1 Pipe, no joints in the geology.4 Pipes, 4 joints in the geology.

Workflow with the GERESWorkflow with the GERES®®-ground probe system-ground probe system

- 10 Min. 10 bar (Temperature compensation),- 30 Min. 10 bar (Final compression check)- Simplified hydraulic calculation, since the probe length is always alike- Small filling and exhaust expenditure, due to smaller volume contents (only 40% of the volumeof a PE 100 duplex probe)

6. Compression check of the entireinstallation

- Connecting pipe is fast installable without the need of moldings, with small bending radii (5 x Ø)- Connecting pipe is fast installable with a press-fitting-system- Modular distributor

5. Connecting pipe transfer anddistributor installation

- No mounting of spacer, because the probe is inherently stable- The probe can be unfilled sinked - a weight is already installed in the factory- Insensitively to notches, scoring and crack propagation- Easily installation of a re-usable injection pipe/tube by the large interior of the probe

4. Sinking the probe

- Adjusting the probe on the drilling depth- Visual check, no leakage test necessarily

3. Probe preparation for appropriatedepth

- Protection of deeper water layer- Minimized drilling risk, because the borehole is never deeper as 36 m [118 ft]

2. Drilling

- Use of small drilling equipment; close space conditions are well attainable1. Setting up the installation site

There are many possibilities to obtain energy for solutionsdriven by heat pump technology!GERES® GmbH develop a cluster of heat exchangers whichcan be used in a liquid medium.Lakes, Rivers, Sea, Sewage treatment plants,Textile industry, Chemical industry, Food industryto name some of the possible opportunities, where theclustered heat exchanger offer a good and efficient serviceits operators. The particular advantage of the clusters is that reservoirsdo not have to be rebuilt or modified, because the registerfit into each bowl and do not need a clarified liquid. When used in unclarified liquids the cluster can be easilycleaned, using a high pressure lance, from the bowl edge. The clusters can be also used in aggressive media. In thecase of specific use in an aggressive media, werecommend to contact us to adapt the material for thesupporting construction to the specific requirements.
