São Tomé und Príncipe, portugiesisch „São Tomé e Príncipe“ˈ ist ein Inselstaat im Golf von Guinea, etwa 200 km vor der Küste Afrikas westlich vor Äquatorialguinea und Gabun. Die Insel São Tomé ist nach dem Heiligen Thomas benannt; Príncipe ist die „Insel des Prinzen“ (oder: des „Fürsten“). São Tomé und Príncipe ist nach den Seychellen der zweitkleinste Staat Afrikas. Die beiden namensgebenden Inseln liegen zwischen den zu Äquatorialguinea gehörenden Inseln Bioko und Annobón.Über 90 Prozent der Einwohner leben auf der südlichen, größeren Insel São Tomé, die 48 Kilometer lang und 32 Kilometer breit ist. Sie ist die gebirgigere der beiden Inseln. Die höchste Erhebung ist 2024 Meter hoch. Auf São Tomé liegt die gleichnamige Hauptstadt. Die nördlichere, kleinere Insel Príncipe ist etwa 16 Kilometer lang und sechs Kilometer breit; ihre höchste Erhebung misst 927 Meter.
São Tomé and Príncipe, officially the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, is a Portuguese-speaking island nation in the Gulf ofGuinea, off the western equatorial coast of Central Africa.It consists of two archipelagos around the two main islands: São Tomé and Príncipe, located about 140 kilometres (87 mi) apart and about 250 and 225 kilometres (155 and 140 mi), respectively, off the northwestern coastof Gabon. Both islands are part of an extinct volcanic mountain range. São Tomé, the sizable southern island, is situated just north of the equator. Itwas named in honour of Saint Thomas by Portuguese explorers whoarrived at the island on his feast day on the western shores of the island, a small village called Anobom.With a census population of 187,356 (2012), São Tomé and Príncipe is the second-smallest African country, behind Seychelles. It is also the smallest Portuguese-speaking country.
