Preliminary conclusions (27 April 2005)• Zenith measurements successful

(improved deep-space calibration)• Telemetry: up- and downlink: successful, but improvement needed for SCOUT • Various other changes (heaters etc.) worked excellent (tropics !!)• Despite various ‘logistical’ problems (extremely short preparation phase in

Aracatuba) and inherent problems with clouds we have obtained good measurements at the time of the Envisat overpass.

MIPAS-STR IMK-Seminar 7 Oktober 2005 18

Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe in der Helmholtz-GemeinschaftSummary (7 October 2005)

HALO: GLORIA-AB and POLSTRACC

Demonstrator : our contribution in-line with schedule

Preparation for the SCOUT-O3 campaign (Nov/Dec 2005)

Telemetry: up- and downlink : completed and testedTC5 (for CHRISTA-NF and MARSCHALLS)

2 successful test flights for MIPAS-STR

Data retrieval of the Aracatuba campaign

17.02.2005 flight : profiles for CH1, work on CH2 in progress15.02.2005 flight : level-1 processing in progress

ENVISAT Launch : 1 March 2002

Chemistry Payload on ENVISAT: MIPAS, SCIAMACHY and GOMOS

Validation of the ENVISAT measurements :

ESABC (ENVISAT Stratospheric Aircraft and Balloon Campaign)

Earlier validation activities : middle- and high latitudes

February 2005 : Validation in the tropics

Aircraft: Bandeirante, Falcon and the Geophysica

Page 21 TROCCINOX Science Meeting, Aracatuba, 17 February 2005

Motivation for validation in the tropics

Interesting region for science, thus accurate satellite data needed

Measurements from Satellite difficult because Low temperatures at the tropopause

Relatively high vertical resolution required

Page 22 TROCCINOX Science Meeting, Aracatuba, 17 February 2005

Why aircraft measurements for Envisat validation

Envisat is in a polar sun synchronous orbit

Equator crossing time : 10 and 22 hrs local time

Distance between two orbits about 3000 km

Aircraft can carry a large payload for - internal validation- measurement of complementary species

Conclusions

During the complete flight clouds were in the field of view of the MIPAS-STR instrument and of course also in that of MIPAS-Envisat, except in the last section

The last section was cloud free even at the 8 km tangent point and will be extremely useful for MIPAS-Envisat validation

Conclusions

Excellent coincidences between satellite and the aircraft measurements have been obtained for 4 flights

High quality in-situ and remote sensing data have been obtained

The measurements made during the campaign will provide the most extensive data set for the validationof Envisat in the tropics.
