Das Sultanat Brunei (amtlich Brunei Darussalam, malaiisch Negara Brunei Darussalam) ist ein Staat in Asien. Er liegt auf der Insel Borneo (indonesisch Kalimantan) im Südchinesischen Meer und grenzt an Malaysia. Übersetzt ins Deutsche bedeutet der arabische Begriff Darussalam ( السالم -DMG dāru s ,دارsalām) so viel wie Ort des Friedens und bezeichnet im islamischen Verständnis jeden Staat, dessen Gesetzgebung sich am islamischen Recht, der Scharia, orientiert. Negara bedeutet auf malaiisch Staat und der eigentliche Name des Landes Brunei geht auf vorislamische Zeit zurück und leitet sich von dem chinesischen Namen Po-Ni ab. Auch der

Name Borneo ist mit Po-Ni und Brunei verwandt.

السالم دار is a sovereign state located on ,(بروناي،the north coast of the island of Borneo, in Southeast Asia. Apart from its coastline with the South China Sea, it is completely surrounded by the state of Sarawak, Malaysia, and it is separated into two parts by the Sarawak district of Limbang. It is the only sovereign state completely on the island of Borneo, with the remainder of the island forming parts of Malaysia and Indonesia.
