El Salvador (spanisch „Der Heiland“ oder „Der Erretter“) ist ein Staat in Zentralamerika und grenzt an Guatemala, Honduras sowie an den Pazifik. El Salvador, das in einem Erdbebengebiet liegt, ist das kleinste Land Zentralamerikas mit der gleichzeitig höchsten Bevölkerungsdichte. Mit einer Fläche von 21.041 km² ist El Salvador ungefähr so groß wie Hessen und damit das kleinste der zentralamerikanischen Länder. Im Süden grenzt es an den Pazifik und den Golf von Fonseca mit einer Küstenlänge von 307 km. Es hat als einziges Land in Mittelamerika keinen direkten Zugang zum Karibischen Meer.El Salvador ist geprägt durch eine Kette von Vulkanen, die das Land grob in drei Regionen unterteilt: den südlichen Küstenstreifen, die zentralen Hochebenen und Täler und die nördlichen Berge. Der höchste Berg ist der El Pital (2730 m) an der Grenze zu Honduras. Der höchste Vulkan ist der Santa Ana im Westen mit einer Höhe von 2365 m. Der längste Fluss ist der Río Lempa mit 320 km auf Staatsgebiet (422 km insgesamt).
