Munich (München) is the capital and largest city of the German state of Bavaria, on the banks of River Isar north of the Bavarian Alps. Munich is the third largest city in Germany, after Berlin and Hamburg, and the 12th biggest city of the European Union, with a population of above 1.5 million.Marienplatz, the true heart of Munich has on the eastern side the Old Town hall from 1480, the tower besides was a city gate of the first fortification.  The Church of St. Peter is one of Munich’s landmarks, the oldest parish church in the city, and is known affectionately by the locals as Alter Peter (“Old Peter”)

Designed by Jörg von Halsbach - better known as the master builder of the Frauenkirche, the building that has been known as the Old Town Hall since the nineteenth century, was built between 1470 and 1480

The Old Town Hall serves today

as a building for representative

purposes for the city council

The 55-meter-tall tower is visible from a number of spots in the city. The tower is actually older than the building proper as it was built in the twelfth century as part of Munich's fortifications.

It's possible to climb to the very top of it from where you have a great vantage point

Heiliggeistkirche (Church of the Holy Ghost) is a Gothic hall church (14th century)

Of the original Gothic church only the choir buttresses and the north wall of the nave remain. The tower (1730) has a lantern dome of characteristic Munich type.

Viktualienmarkt Over the years, this market has evolved from a

farmers' market to a popular market

for fresh food and delicatessen

Viktualienmarkt offers exotic ingredients that are not available anywhere else in the area, and is renowned for its diversity and size: 140 stalls and shops offering flowers and plants, fruits and vegetables, venison and fowl, eggs, butter, honey, fish, meat, sausages, herbs, spices, delicatessens, wine and tea are assembled on an area covering 22,000 square metres

Viktualienmarkt The Maypole in the centre carries figurettes displaying the trades and crafts of this part of Munich. Maypoles date from the ages of general illiteracy and served to represent a village or later, as in this case, a borough and its trades to travelling salesmen or travelling craftsmen looking for a new master to learn from
