ARCHITONIC MATERIAL TENDENCIES:INTERVIEW WITH ARIK LEVY

Constantly creating, Paris-based designer and artist Arik Levy says that he ‘thinks with his heart and feels with his brain’. Architonic met up with Tel Aviv-born Levy to share his thoughts on materials, the power of emotions and intelligence, and more.

Can you tell us about a recent project of yours and what you were hoping to achieve?My job as a designer is to solve an actual problem and provide a springboard to the near future. I’m not interes-ted in just doing a project. I continually want to learn and do something new for myself and for the company. The chair ‘Split’ for TON, for example, was a great challenge for both sides. Rather than just another fair-piece, we wanted to develop something that is innovative, long-lasting, and which differentiates itself from the others.

At what point within the design process do you decide in favour of a specific material? Every case is specific. Materials are certainly a signifi-cant part of the process. For me personally it is impor-tant how the material is made, what I can build with it, what I can change and how I can put different materials together. Materials have been there for ages; what is new is the way you treat them.

I don’t want to sound too spiritual, but I think materials connect to our body and to our mind. I can close my eyes and feel the energy of stone, the energy of wood. Metal

feels like metal, it is radiating “I am metal.” If you choose a hard shape, you don’t hurry to sit on it because it is telling you “I am hard”, even when it’s made from a soft material. I work with this in both my art and design.

Which material would you choose if you had to restrict yourself to working with just one for the next three years?Intelligence and emotions. Those are the materials that have the power to create many different things. If you plug in another layer of intelligence in materials and you work with emotion, or reflection in mind, you can inter-fere positively, and enhance something that will end up being something else. The end materials that we create are at a level of sophistication, in terms of their charac-teristics, than classic materials.

Another material would be affection. A person who wakes up in the morning and has the right amount of affection du-ring the day is a happy person. I think the work reflects that.

At Light + Building 2018, Lucite International presents Perspex® Light – a revolutionary range of cell-cast acry-lic sheet products optimised for LED lighting applications. Perspex® acrylic is the perfect partner for the latest LED technologies, offering optimum benefits in diffusion and light-guide panel technologies for back-lit and edge-lit luminaire designs. Developed specifically for engineers and product developers designing LED lighting units, Perspex® Light offers unique advantages over other ma-terials and enhances the performance of LEDs through its superior light output and even illumination.

Lucite International is part of the Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation and the global leader in the design, develop-ment and manufacture of acrylic-based products. Already recognised as experts in edge illumination and products for illuminated advertising, the company’s research and development team created Perspex® Light to be used hand-in-hand with the latest LED technologies. The key benefit of Perspex® Light in this context is its unrivalled optical clarity, which enables manufacturers to produ-ce brighter and more efficient luminaires that accurately maintain the desired light transmission, distribution and colour temperature.

The three products on display at Light + Building are Perspex® Edge, Perspex® Diffuse and Perspex® Reflect. Perspex® Edge is a light-guide panel for edge-lit solu-tions, with various grades developed to ensure optimal efficiency in panels of different widths and thicknesses. This high-clarity acrylic achieves superior brightness and evenness in thinner and more efficient lighting units. Per-spex® Diffuse’s unique technology also features a matt surface designed to optimise the spread of illumination when used in tandem with both back-lit and edge-lit pa-nels, for lighting as well as for illuminated advertising and display applications. Its advanced diffusion tech-nology reduces hotspots and provides excellent colour

correlation to maintain the correct tone of light, from warm white to natural daylight. Perspex® Reflect is a superior cast-acrylic reflective sheet used in the back of luminaires to optimise light output, where acrylic is the material of choice.

Perspex® brand has used its long standing expertise in developing and manufacturing Perspex® cast acrylic for illuminated advertising and visual communication applica-tions, to now provide the highest performance cell cast acrylic sheet for lighting applications in their Perspex® Light range. Specialists will be present to explain the tech-nology and discuss the bespoke manufacturing capabilities and sampling opportunities available to customers.
