St.Volodymyr the Great

- Equal to the Apostles

“Truly, Kyiv became the mother of

all the cities of your kingdom, O great

Volodymyr. Upon all the altars throughout

your domain, Christ enthroned Himself

with the Father and the Holy Spirit,

because of your efforts and those of

the grandmother Olha. For this, your

people glorify you, our enlightener and

swift intercessor. We also implore Christ

together with you for peace for the nation

and salvation of our souls.”

The year was 988. Prince Volodymyr of

Rus’ had consolidated his power, and was

hoping to make a lasting name for himself by raising his

people up to the status of a great nation. Among the

obstacles he faced was the fact all the great nations he knew

and wished to emulate had abandoned paganism in favor of

what he called “the Four Great Religions,” that is, Eastern

Christianity, Western Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

Guided by Divine Providence, Volodymyr decided to send

out four royal delegations that would learn what they could

about each of these and report back to him. He was, in fact,

leaning towards Eastern Christianity thanks to the influence

of his grandmother, St. Olha, for whom he had the deepest

respect. The delegations, however, would serve both to

confirm his choice and to impress his people with his

fairness.

The delegations returned bearing exactly the news

that Volodymyr was hoping for. Those who had studied

Judaism and Islam had misgivings about both. Those who

had studied Western Christianity were most favorable, but

those who had studied Eastern Christianity were

enthusiastic in their praise. His envoys arrived in

Constantinople and the Emperor had the Patriarch prepare

the massive cathedral of St. Sophia-Holy Wisdom

for the celebration of the Divine Liturgy so

Володимирове Хрещення Руси-України.

Також і наша УГКЦ є Церквою

Свято-Володимирового Хрещення, тому

для нас цей святий є дуже близьким: він

походить з нашого народу; він запалив

нам світильник християнської віри, який

освітлює нам шлях впродовж століть;

він дарував нам основу, на якій будуємо

своє особисте, родинне, суспільно

-культурне і державне життя.

Якщо поглянемо в глиб історії, то побачимо, що

християнська віра не була чимось новим для нашого

народу. Давнє передання каже нам, що першим

апостолом на Київській Русі був св. Андрій

Первозванний, який побував на київських горах і

прорік, що ця земля стане християнською. Також маємо

історичну певність, що на нашій землі вже з першого

століття проповідувано Христову науку святим

Климентієм Папою Римським, який закінчив своє

трудолюбиве мучениче життя на українській землі, і

його мощі ще до сьогодні знаходяться у Києві, в

Печерській Лаврі. Також його мощі в історії нашої

Церкви відіграли дуже важливе значення, бо, власне,

цими мощами благословляли Київських митрополитів.

В ІХ ст. на слов'янських землях проповідували

євангельське вчення святі брати Кирило і Методій.

Київські князі Аскольд і Дир ще у 867 р. прийняли

світло Христового Євангелія і підписували свої

договори християнськими іменами. Бабця св.

Володимира, св. княгиня Ольга, охрестилась ще у 947 р.

Проте це були тільки паростки християнства.

Розрослось воно на наших землях у буйне дерево, що

зродило численні плоди святості, саме (prod. na st. 3) (cont. on pg. 3)

урочисто звершуємо його пам'ять.

Св. Володимир Великий і сам пережив власне

Хрещення як духовне свято, і зі своїм народом захотів

поділитися радістю від того, що знайшов внаслідок

своїх духовних пошуків. Від святого Володимира, як

від світильника, запалилися свічі віри в серцях наших

предків. Віра очистила їх від омани ідолопоклонства

і просвітила Христовим благовістям. Християнські

цінності, які він прийняв, стали вирішальними у житті

нашого народу на багато століть уперед. Християнська

віра заклала основи нашої культури, писемності,

мистецтва, архітектури; розвинулись церковні

структури, чернецтво, місійна діяльність, політичний

устрій... Наша християнська віра стала наріжним

каменем українських сімейних, родинних цінностей

і традицій та фундаментом нашого громадського

життя і суспільної моралі. Віра, яку Господь дарував

нашому народу через Рівноапостольного князя

Володимира, принесла достойні плоди Духа - багатьох

святих і праведників.

Святкуючи сьогодні, дорогі в Христі, пам'ять цього

великого святого нашого народу, просвітителя і

хрестителя, постійного заступника перед Богом,

наслідуймо його у своєму житті та вчинках. Пізнаваймо

нашу християнську віру, зростаймо в ній, долаймо все

суєтне, гріховне і житейське, а будуймо своє життя

згідно з Христовим Євангелієм. Це вимагатиме від нас

зусиль, але маємо у цьому гідного помічника і

заступника перед Божим престолом – св. Володимира.

Молімо всеблагого Бога, аби Він молитвами цього

нашого просвітителя допомагав нам на цьому шляху

духовного вдосконалення та посилав свої щедрі

благодаті. Св. Рівноапостольний князю Володимире

Великий, Христителю України, моли Бога за нас

грішних і за весь український народ. Амінь.

moved by the majesty and beauty of the Byzantine Liturgy,

they reported to Volodymyr; “We did not know whether

were on heaven or on earth, for surely there is no such

splendor or beauty anywhere on earth. We cannot describe

it to you: only this we know is that God dwells there

among men, and that their service surpasses the worship

of other places, for we cannot forget such beauty.”

Volodymyr and the people of Rus’ were baptized.

Volodymyr underwent a true conversion, manifesting

his Christian faith in deeds. He built churches, abolished

the death penalty, married off his concubines to his

soldiers, freed slaves, built schools, and performed many

acts of mercy. He placed Rus’ on the level of Eastern and

Western Christian nations. He is called ‘Equal to the

Apostles’, ‘another Constantine in word and deed,’ and the

‘most glorious ambassador of Christ.”
