• To form the present tense Konjunktiv II of all modal verbs except mögen, the endings –te, –test, –te, –ten, –tet, or –ten are added to the stem of the verb. With mögen, the stem changes to möch- in the Konjunktiv II before the endings are added.

• In standard word order, the conjugated modal verb is in second position and the accompanying infinitive is in last position. Modal verbs do not generally use würde [+ infinitive] to form the Konjunktiv II.

• The modal verbs in the Konjunktiv II express less certainty than they do in the indicative.

Ich kann das tun.I can do that.

Ich könnte das auch tun.I could do that too.

Er darf ins Kino gehen.He’s allowed to go to the movies.

Er dürfte liberal sein.He might be liberal.

Das muss ein Vorteil sein.That has to be an advantage.

Das andere müsste ein Nachteil sein.The other would have to be a disadvantage.

Ich will friedlich reagieren.I want to react peacefully.

Er wollte auch friedlich reagieren.He would like to react peacefully too.

Ihr sollt um 8 Uhr da sein.You are supposed to be there at 8 o’clock.

• The verb können is used when a person could or would be capable of performing a task. In English, ich könnte (Konjunktiv II) and ich konnte (Präteritum) can both be translated as I could, ich könnte in the sense of I would be able to and ich konnte in the sense of I was able to.

Der Wissenschaftler konnte das Problem lösen.The scientist could (was able to) solve the problem.

• The verb dürfen in the Konjunktiv II implies the idea of may or might in English.

Der Richter dürfte mit seinem Urteil recht haben.The judge should be right with his verdict.

Wollen Sie ein eigenes Schlafzimmer?Ja, wenn ich dürfte!Do you want your own bedroom?Yes, if I may.

• Though dürfen and können are used in both the indicative and the Konjunktiv II to make polite requests, the Konjunktiv II is a more polite way of asking.

• The verb müssen in the indicative means must or to have to. In the Konjunktiv II, it means someone would have to do something.

Sie mussten ihn einsperren, weil er schuldig war.They had to imprison him because he was guilty.

Sie müssten ihn einsperren, wenn sie ihn schuldig fänden.They would have to imprison him, if they found him guilty.

• The verb sollen shows a sense of obligation. In the Konjunktiv II, it implies that a person ought to or should do something. It can also be used in a hypothetical sense for something that is supposed to happen (is rumored to happen).

Ich sollte heute für die große Chemieprüfung lernen.I ought to study today for the big chemistry exam.

Sollte die Stadt nächstes Jahr Geld haben, könnte sie einen Naturlehrpfad bauen.If the city were to have money next year, they would be able to build a nature trail.

• Since the Konjunktiv II is used in statements that are contrary to fact, the conjunction wenn is often used with modal verbs in the Konjunktiv II.

Wenn ich müsste, würde ich meine Meinung verteidigen.If I had to, I would defend my opinion.

Wenn die Politiker es wollten, könnten sie viel erreichen.If the politicians wanted to, they could achieve a lot.

ACHTUNG!

As with sollen, the Präteritum form and the Konjunktiv II form of wollen are identical.

Wenn wir Bargeld wollten, mussten wir es von der Bank holen.When we wanted cash, we had to get it from the bank.

Wenn die Naturschützer es wollten, könnten sie Klimaer-wärmung stark reduzieren.If the environmentalists wanted to, they could reduce global warming drastically.
