Fast alle Menschen seien Sklav*innen, behauptete der franzö-sische Schriftsteller Nicolas de Chamfort ♠: „Weil sie nicht nein sagen können.“ Es gibt zwei Arten, wie Musiker*innen nein sagen können: entweder durch musikalische Entschei-dungen, Texte oder Karriere strategien, die die Ablehnung zum Ausdruck bringen. Oder durch Schweigen, weil sie diesen Mitteln misstrauen. No! Music beschäftigt sich mit beiden Varianten. Ist unter den gegebenen Verhält nissen eine konsequente Ver neinung überhaupt noch möglich? Oder geht man schon faule Kompromisse ein durch die Nutzung digitaler Vertriebs- und Promo tionkanäle, gängi-ger Soft- und Hard ware oder wenn man sich auf die Büh-nen der üblichen Clubs stellt? Ist also am Ende die einzige konsequente Haltung die des Titelhelden von Herman Melvilles Erzählung Bartleby der Schreiber, der zunächst nur Arbeitsaufträge ablehnt, es dann vorzieht, das Büro nicht mehr zu verlassen, und am Ende auch die Nahrungs-aufnahme verweigert? ♠ (1741–1794)

Nearly all men are slaves, claimed the French writer Nicolas de Chamfort ♠: “Because they can’t say no.” There are two ways in which musicians can say no: either through musical decisions, texts, or career strategies which express their refusal. Or through silence, because they do not trust these means. No! Music explores both variants. Is a rigorous negation at all possible under the given conditions? Or does one already enter into lame compromises through the use of digital distribution and promotion channels, conven-tional hard- and software, or when one performs on stage at the usual clubs? Is ultimately the only principled approach that of the eponymous hero of Herman Melville’s story Bartleby the Scrivener, who begins by rejecting orders at work, then refuses to leave the office, and finally declines all food? ♠ (1741–1794)

Pussy RIotMit situationistischen Punk-Performances und radikaler Angriffslust legt das Kollektiv seit 2011 den Finger in Russlands Wunden. Spätestens die Inhaftierung dreier Mitglieder wegen ihres „Punk-Gebets“ in einer Kirche zog weltweit alle Augen auf sie. Seitdem setzen sie auf die offensive Politisierung ihrer persönlichen Schicksale.With situationist Punk performances and radical belligerence, the collective has been putting its fingers in Russia’s wounds since 2011, finally capturing the world’s attention following the arrest of three members for their “punk prayer” in a church. Since then they have pursued the vigorous politicization of their personal biographies.

Matana RobeRts & Chor der Kulturen der WeltAtmen heißt auch: die Stimme erheben, infrage stellen, herausfordern, verneinen. Roberts, Saxofonistin, Klangexperimentalistin und Wort-führerin einer neuen querköpfigen Jazzszene, hat für No! Music ein Chor-stück komponiert, das diese grundlegende Körperfunktion politisiert.Breathing also means raising one’s voice, questioning, challenging, refusing. Roberts, saxophonist, sound experimenter, and spokes womanfor a new maverick Jazz scene, has composed a choral work for No! Music which politicizes this basic bodily function.

Pan Daijing 20h Konzert TIGaná Santana spielt Milton NascimentoEine genialer Schachzug rettete 1973 Milton Nascimentos Album Milagre dos peixes vor der Zensur der brasilianischen Militärdiktatur: Statt der Lied texte sang er bloß Lalala. Der Singer-Songwriter Tiganá Santana wird für seine Verknüpfung von brasilianischer und westafrika nischer Musik gefeiert. Für No! Music interpretiert er Milagre dos peixes neu. In 1973, thanks to a stroke of genius, Milton Nascimento rescued his album Milagre dos peixes from the censorship of the Brazilian military dictatorship. Instead of lyrics he simply sang lalala. The singer-songwriter Tiganá Santana is celebrated for his combination of Brazilian and West African music. For No! Music he has produced a new interpretation of Milagre dos peixes.

21.30h Konzert ARRIGo BaRnabé & Claras e Crocodilos1980 dekonstruierte und revolutionierte der Pop-Avantgardist mit dem Album Clara Crocodilo die Música Popular Brasileira mit Zwölfton-technik, dissonantem Jazz und Spoken Word. Ein unabgeschlossener Prozess: Bis heute wird das Material immer wieder neu bearbeitet.In 1980 the Pop avant-gardist deconstructed and revolutionized Música Popular Brasileira with Clara Crocodilo, employing the twelve-tone technique, dissonant Jazz, and spoken word. An unfinished process: to this day the material is being continually reworked.

23h Konzert Nobody (Willis Earl Beal)Lieber Niemand als fremdbestimmt: Der stimmgewaltige Karriere-Abbre-cher und Zuschreibungs-Skeptiker Beal inszeniert seinen Lo-Fi-Blues lieber in Eigenregie und als nebulöser Außenseiter. Better to be a nobody than to surrender one’s autonomy: The career dropout and attribution skeptic Beal prefers to stage his lo-fi Blues under his own direction and as a nebulous outsider—with a powerful voice.

Mit zehn Coverversionen feiern Berliner Musiker*innen und Bands mit unterschiedlichen musikalischen und widerständigen Hintergründen diesen Inbegriff der Abwesenheit von Musik und des Klangs der Stille.John Cage’s legendary composition 4'33" is the icon of all pauses. With ten cover versions, Berlin-based musicians and bands with different musical backgrounds and histories of resistance celebrate this embodi-ment of music’s absence and the texture of silence.

ToshimaRu NakamuRaEnde der 1990er tauschte Nakamura die Rockgitarre gegen das Misch-pult und begann, mit Klang-Texturen und der Reduktion auf minimale Gesten zu experimentieren. Sein No-Input Mixing Desk bedeutet: ein Misch pult, ein Kabel. Den Feedback-Loop zwischen Eingang und Aus-gang modelliert er zu einer faszinierenden Szenerie aus „silent noise“.At the end of the 1990s Nakamura exchanged the rock guitar for the mix-ing desk and began to experiment with sound textures and a reduction to minimal gestures. His No Input Mixing Desk means: a mixing desk, a cable, modeling the feedback loop between input and output to create a fascinating landscape of “silent noise.”

Pan Daijing 20h Konzert jandekDer Archetyp des unabhängigen Außenseiters: Seit 1978 veröffentlicht Jandek jährlich Alben mit lärmigen, dissonanten Folk- und Blues-Impro-visationen und poetischen Texten; ebenso verstörend wie eindringlich. Mit seinem ersten Auftritt 2004 gab der Texaner plötzlich die Isolation auf. Für No! Music spielt er eines seiner seltenen Konzerte. The archetype of the independent outsider: Each year since 1978 Jandek has released albums with noisy, dissonant Folk and Blues im-provisations and poetic texts, as unsettling as they are intense. With his first performance in 2004 the Texan suddenly abandoned his isolation. For No! Music he will be playing one of his rare concerts.

Alexander HackeDie „Godfathers of Noise“, inspiriert vom russischen Nihilismus ebenso wie von Louisianas auf Gebrauchsgegenständen spielenden „Spasm“- Bands des frühen Jazz, gründeten sich 1965 in London, Ontario. Mit selbstgebastelten Instrumenten, Lust auf zerstörte Erwartungen und experimentell gewonnene Einsichten gewannen sie Fans von Thurston Moore bis R.E.M. und eine riesige Kult-Anhängerschaft in Japan.The “Godfathers of Noise,” inspired as much by Russian nihilism as by Louisiana’s “Spasm” bands from the early days of Jazz who performed on everyday objects, were founded in London, Ontario, in 1965. With self-made instruments, a passion for destroying expectations, and insights derived from experimentation, they have won fans from Thurston Moore to R.E.M. as well as gaining a huge cult following in Japan.

Können Ausdruck und Bewegung Klang auch rein visuell vermitteln?Bodily and spatial experiences are an inherent part of the sound artist’s work. For No! Music she will be performing a high-intensity sonic work, which nevertheless remains inaudible. Can expression and movement convey sound by purely visual means?
