RUINÖS waren die Kosten des in siebenjähriger Bauzeit im Stile der Neorenaissance errichteten Opernhauses. 20 Millionen Mark, das Zehnfache der geplanten Bausumme. So soll Kaiser Wilhelm I. bei der Eröffnung 1880 gesagt haben: "Das könnte ich mir in Berlin nicht erlauben.“ Viele Uraufführungen wurden hier gefeiert. Zuletzt, vor der Zerstörung des Opernhauses im Zweiten Weltkrieg, auch Carl Orffs „Carmina Burana“ im Jahre 1937. 1952 begannen Frankfurter Bürger Spenden zu sammeln für den Erhalt des Gebäuderestes. Noch 1965 schlug der damalige Oberbürgermeister Rudi Arndt vor, die Ruine einfach zu sprengen, was ihm den Namen „Dynamit-Rudi“ einbrachte. 1976 begann die Planung des Wiederaufbaus und am 28. August 1981 wurde die Alte Oper wiedereröffnet. Diesmal hatte es das fünffache der geplanten 40 Millionen Mark gekostet. Hinter der historischen Fassade verbirgt sich seitdem ein modernes Konzert- und Kongresshaus.

Ruinous costs were involved in the seven-year construction period of the Opera House, built in the style of the Neo-Renaissance: 20 Million Marks, ten times the planned construction cost. As Emperor Wilhelm is supposed to have said at its opening in 1880, “I would never be allowed to do that in Belin.” Many premieres have been celebrated here. One of the last performances in 1937, before the Opera House was destroyed in the Second World War, being Carl Orff‘s ”Carmina Burana“. In 1952, Frankfurt residents began gathering donations to preserve the building’s remains. Yet in 1965, the erstwhile mayor, Rudi Arndt, suggested that it ought to be blown up. In 1976, reconstruction planning began and on August 28th, 1981, the Alte Oper was reopened. This time it went five times over its 40 million budget. Since then, a modern Concert and Congress Hall is to be found behind the historic façade.

Lage auf großzügig angelegtem, sowohl von Einheimischen als auch Touristen viel frequentierten Opernplatz, in den Goethestraße und Große Bockenheimer Straße, die sog. Fressgass münden. Guter Betrachtungsabstand.
