IfirstmetwithChancellorKlaichwhenwesubmittedopposingtestimonybeforeaNevadaLegislativesubcommitteeregardingthegovernanceoftheNevadaCommunityColleges,justoverayearago.Subsequently,astheChairofHigherEdCommitteefortheLatinoLeadershipCouncil,DanmetseveraltimeswithourgroupregardingavarietyofHigherEdissuesonLatinostudents.
Atfirst,weproceededcarefully.However,throughoutourmeetingswebeganearnestdiscussiononactualissues,includingcommunitycollegegovernance.We"rolledup"oursleevesandfocusedonsolutiondrivendiscussionsandactions.DanfacilitatedourmeetingswithPresidentsofvariousNevadahigheredinstitutions,includingUNR,UNLV,andNevadaStateCollege.Eventually,weevencametoprovideinputintotheeventual"Systemwithinasystem"governanceofthecommunitycolleges.
IfindDanKlaichtobeagreatassettoNevada,ourcommunityandstudents,andtoHigherEd.Hispersonalskills,hispassiontofindsolutionsforaddressingourstudent'sneedsareparamountandimportant.Iamnotinagreementwiththemanyconclusionsreachedbyourlocalnewspaper,theReviewJournal.IpersonallyfindthatDanKlaichworksveryhardtogeteverythingconsideredandrightbeforeproceedingwithapropercourseofaction.
InmyworktoadvocateonLatinoCommunityissuesrangingfromeducation,k12andhighered,policeandsocialjustice,andbusinessandemployment,I'vehadtheopportunitytoworkwithmanyorganizationalleaders.IwouldrateDanKlaichasasuperbleader.
Inyourdiscussionstoday,IimploreyoutotakeintoaccountthispersonalletterandthegreatassetthatChancellorDanKlaichistoourentirecommunity,butespeciallyhowIbelievehehasultimatelyhelpedourLatinoCommunityaswell.
