Beethovens Chorwerke sind mit Super-lativen verbunden: Die 9. Symphonie mit der „Ode an die Freude“ zählt zu den weltweit meistaufgeführten und be-kanntesten Werken, die Missa solemnis bezeichnete Beet hoven selbst als sein „größtes Werk“. Doch auch die weniger prominenten Werke stehen in ihrer Bedeu-tung und Ausdruckskraft kaum hinter die-sen zurück. So hebt sich die frühe Messe in C-Dur mit ihrer dramatischen Ausdeutung des liturgischen Textes in expressiver Weise von zeitgenössischen Mess vertonungen ab.

Anlässlich des kommenden Jubiläumsjahres 2020 erschließt der Carus-Verlag mit dem Projekt „Beethoven vocal“ Beethovens Chormusik. Die beiden Messen liegen be-reits in Urtext-Ausgaben für die Praxis vor, die dem aktuellen Stand wissenschaftlicher Forschung entsprechen; für den Finalsatz der 9. Symphonie wurde ein praxisorien-tierter Klavierauszug in einer neuen Aus-gabe eingerichtet.

Für die Einstudierung sind komfortable Übehilfen im Angebot wie Übe-CDs der Reihe Carus Choir Coach oder Unterstüt-zung durch carus music, die Chor-App.

Beethoven’s choral works are always spo-ken of in superlatives: The 9th Symphony with the “Ode to Joy” is one of the most frequently-performed and best-known works in the world, and Beethoven him-self described the Missa solemnis as his “greatest work”. But the less well-known works are hardly any less important in terms of signifi cance and expressive power. The early Mass in C major stands out from contemporary settings of the mass in its expressivity, with its dramatic interpreta-tion of the liturgical text.

For Beethoven’s 250th birthday in 2020, Carus-Verlag is making accessi-ble Beet hoven’s choral music with the Beethoven vocal project. The two mass-es are available in modern Urtext edi-tions, and for the fi nal movement of the 9th Symphony a practical performing vocal score has been newly arranged.

For rehearsing these major works we offer practical support with our practice CDs in the Carus Choir Coach series, and carus music, the choir app.

Genau 200 Jahre ist es her, dass Beethoven ein Thema in d-Moll in seinem Skizzenbuch notierte, welches er später, leicht verändert, im 2. Satz der Sin-fonie Nr. 9 verwendete. Der vorliegende Klavierauszug des Finalsatzes dieser Sinfonie unter Beteiligung von Vokalsoli und Chor basiert auf dem Klavieraus-zug von Carl Reinecke, der gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts entstand. Die weltweit beliebte Fassung von Reinecke kommt dem Orchestersatz klanglich sehr nahe und ist gleichzeitig gut spielbar. Stefan Schuck hat diesen heute noch weit verbreiteten Klavierauszug unter Berücksichtigung aktueller For-schungsergebnisse zu Artikulation und Dynamik überarbeitet und Probebuch-staben der gängigen Orchestermaterialien eingefügt, sodass er auch zu bereits vorhandenen Notenausgaben verwendbar ist.

It is exactly 200 years ago since Beethoven wrote down a D-minor themein his sketchbook which he would later use, in a slightly altered form, in the second movement of the 9th Symphony. The present vocal score of the final movement of the symphony, which includes both vocal soloists and choir, is based on the vocal score prepared by Carl Reinecke towards the end of the 19th century. Reinecke’s popular, acclaimed version comes nearest to rende-ring the sound of Beethoven’s orchestral writing and at the same time it is very playable. Stefan Schuck has revised this vocal score, which is still widely used by choirs throughout the world, paying particular attention to articu-lation and dynamics and also introducing the rehearsal letters employed in the orchestral material most commonly used today, thus making it a valuab-le, practical edition for use with the performance material which is available today.

Beethoven’s 9th Symphony is one of the most popular works in the whole of classical music. The crowning conclusion of the 70-minute-long symphony is the fi nal movement with soloists and chorus, a setting which has achieved signifi cance beyond the confi nes of music history. The well-known melody of the “Ode to Joy”, setting Friedrich Schiller’s text, has even been adopted as the offi cial anthem of the European Union.

With the Carus vocal score of the Finale of the 9th Symphony, choral singers have a music edition which is both reliable and suitable for use in performance. The edi-tion is based on the vocal score made by Carl Reinecke around the end of the 19th century. This version, popular worldwide, closely refl ects the sound of the orches-tral writing, yet at the same time remains playable. Stefan Schuck has revised this historic vocal score, in the process taking into account recent research fi ndings.

The new Carus vocal score contains re-hearsal letters from all current versions of the orchestral material, and is thus com-patible with all available music editions. In the presentation of this edition, particular attention has been paid to the practical needs of (choral) singers and répétiteurs, so the German text is also presented in phonetic transcription. A vocal score XL in reader-friendly large print is also available.

For rehearsal preparation, the versions in carus music, the choir app and the practice CD from the Carus Choir Coach series offer invaluable support. For even though almost everyone can sing the melody, the catchy theme is deceptive. The choral writing is considerably more diffi cult: dizzying heights and frequent extreme tempo changes demand a great deal from the choral singers. Neben den bekannten Sinfonien und der Kammermusik haben die drei unter dem Begriff der „Wiener Klassik“ zusammengefassten Meister Haydn, Mozart und Beethoven alle auch Kirchenmusik, insbeson-dere Messen komponiert. Im Schaffen von Haydn und Mozart nimmt diese einen größeren Raum ein als bei Beethoven; während Mozart allerdings mit seinem Wechsel nach Wien 1781 die regelmäßige Komposition von Kirchenmusik einstellt, widmet sich Haydn in seinem Spätwerk beinahe ausschließlich der geistlichen Musik. Die symphonisch konzipierten sechs späten Messen Haydns (ab 1796) bilden den Ausgangspunkt für die beiden Beiträge Beethovens zur Gattung, von denen die Missa solemnis (1824) aufgrund ihrer Dimen sionen letztlich den Kirchenraum überschreitet.

The Viennese Classical Period

Besides well known symphonies and chamber works, the trio of masters known under the collective heading “Viennese Classical Period,” Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, also composed sacred music, espe-cially masses. In the creative output of both Haydn and Mozart this type of music played a much greater role than in Beethoven’s opus. While Mozart indeed ceased composing church music on a regular basis after moving to Vienna in 1781, in his later works Joseph Haydn devoted himself almost exclusively to the composition of sacred music. His six symphonically conceived masses (from 1796 onwards) are the point of departure for both of Beethoven’s contributions to this genre, of which the Missa solemnis (1824), by virtue of its expanded dimensions, exceeds the bounds of a church.

Der Herausgeber der beiden Messen, Dr. Ernst Herttrich, war lange Jahre Editions-leiter der Neuen Beethoven-Gesamtausgabe sowie Leiter des Verlags Beethoven-Haus Bonn und des Beethoven-Archivs. Mit den Beethoven’schen Schreibeigenheiten und gro-ßen Herausforderungen, die die Edition seiner Werke stellen, ist er daher bestens vertraut.

Beethoven described his Missa solemnis as his greatest work several times, a work which, coming “from the heart,” was to touch and move audiences. The surviv-ing sources enable us to recognize how intensively and how long he worked on the composition in order to give what he felt was adequate expression to the text. In its length and musical demands, the Missa solemnis goes far beyond typical liturgical settings, and the premiere took place, for good reason, in a concert hall. The chorus plays a key structural role in the work, and in the process has to master some ex-tremely demanding sections.

The leading Beethoven expert Ernst Hert-trich has produced an Urtext edition based on the available sources, and refl ecting the latest state of scholarship.

Helpful support for rehearsing the de-manding choral parts comes in the form of practice aids – a practice CD in the Carus Choir Coach series, and a version in carus music, the choir app.

A CD recording with the Kammerchor Stuttgart and Frieder Bernius will be pub-lished in autumn 2019.

Die Missa solemnis bezeichnete Beethoven mehrfach als sein größtes Werk, welches „von Herzen“ kommend die Menschen berühren und bewegen sollte. Die über-lieferten Quellen lassen erkennen, wie intensiv und lange sich Beet hoven mit der Komposition beschäftigte, um dem Text einen – in seinem Sinne – adäquaten Aus-druck zu verleihen. In ihrem Umfang und musikalischen Anspruch reicht die Missa solemnis weit über das liturgisch Übliche hinaus, die Uraufführung fand nicht ohne Grund in einem Konzertsaal statt. Der Chor übernimmt in dem Werk eine struk-turell wesentliche Rolle, hat dabei Partien von hohem Anspruch zu bewältigen.

Der erfahrene Beethoven-Experte Ernst Herttrich hat auf der Basis der verfüg-baren Quellen eine Urtext-Ausgabe auf dem aktuellsten wissenschaftlichen Stand herausgegeben.

Hilfreiche Unterstützung für die Einstu-dierung der anspruchsvollen Chorpartien bieten die Übehilfen mit der Übe-CD Carus Choir Coach sowie carus music, der Chor-App.

Eine CD-Aufnahme mit dem Kammerchor Stuttgart unter Leitung von Frieder Bernius erscheint im Herbst 2019.

Neben den bekannten Sinfonien und der Kammermusik haben die drei unter dem Begriff der „Wiener Klassik“ zusammengefassten Meister Haydn, Mozart und Beethoven alle auch Kirchenmusik, insbeson-dere Messen komponiert. Im Schaffen von Haydn und Mozart nimmt diese einen größeren Raum ein als bei Beethoven; während Mozart allerdings mit seinem Wechsel nach Wien 1781 die regelmäßige Komposition von Kirchenmusik einstellt, widmet sich Haydn in seinem Spätwerk beinahe ausschließlich der geistlichen Musik. Die symphonisch konzipierten sechs späten Messen Haydns (ab 1796) bilden den Ausgangspunkt für die beiden Beiträge Beethovens zur Gattung, von denen die Missa solemnis (1824) aufgrund ihrer Dimen sionen letztlich den Kirchenraum überschreitet.

The Viennese Classical Period

Besides well known symphonies and chamber works, the trio of masters known under the collective heading “Viennese Classical Period,” Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, also composed sacred music, espe-cially masses. In the creative output of both Haydn and Mozart this type of music played a much greater role than in Beethoven’s opus. While Mozart indeed ceased composing church music on a regular basis after moving to Vienna in 1781, in his later works Joseph Haydn devoted himself almost exclusively to the composition of sacred music. His six symphonically conceived masses (from 1796 onwards) are the point of departure for both of Beethoven’s contributions to this genre, of which the Missa solemnis (1824), by virtue of its expanded dimensions, exceeds the bounds of a church.

Die erste der beiden Messvertonungen Beethovens ist in ihrer subjektiv-bekennt-nishaften Tonsprache ausgesprochen mo-dern und zukunftsweisend. Sie erschließt dem liturgischen Text ganz neue Aus-druckswelten. Sie ist keine Vorstufe zur Missa solemnis, sondern ein eigenständi-ges Werk, das für die Weiterentwicklung der Messenkomposition im 19. Jahrhun-dert Maßstäbe gesetzt hat. Ihre Neuartig-keit, die dem Komponisten selbst bewusst war („Von meiner Messe wie überhaupt von mir selbst sage ich nicht gerne etwas, jedoch glaube ich, daß ich den Text be-handelt habe, wie er noch wenig behan-delt worden“), eröffnete einen bis dahin nicht gekannten, zeitgemäßen Zugang zum Glauben, der noch heute aktuell ist. Der Beethoven-Experte Ernst Herttrich (siehe auch S. 7) hat dieses wichtige Werk der Kirchenmusikgeschichte bei Carus in einer kritischen Edition vorgelegt.

Its innova-tive nature, which the composer himself was fully aware of (“I do not speak gladly of my Mass, or of myself, but I do believe that I have treated the text in a manner in which only few have treated it.”), paved the way to a previously unknown, contemporary approach to faith which is still current today. In seinem Passionsoratorium Christus am Ölberge manifestiert sich der Versuch Beethovens, an eine Tradition des 18. Jahrhunderts anzuknüpfen, zugleich aber die dramatische Situation des zweifelnden Jesus im Garten Gethsemane und die Gefangennahme musikalisch umzusetzen. Dabei orientiert sich das Werk an der zeitgenössischen Oper, verwendet auch den Text eines Opernlibrettisten. Damit setzte Beethoven sich von Anfang an der Kritik aus: zu opernhaft, der äußeren Handlung zu verhaftet, die Darstellung Christi zu menschlich – Kritik, die bis heu-te nicht verklungen ist. Doch wird man Beethovens Werk nicht gerecht, wenn man es als Nachfolger von Grauns Tod Jesu oder gar Bachs Matthäus-Passion begreifen will. Beethovens Christus am Ölberge ist weniger geprägt von religiöser Andacht als vielmehr von der dramati-schen Umsetzung einer spezifi schen Situ-ation des Passionsgeschehens in musika-lisch tiefempfundenen Szenen. Mit seiner großartigen, geradezu opernhaften Musik ein unbedingt hörens- und erlebenswer-tes, anderes Passionsoratorium.

Die Edition folgt in Noten und Text dem Erstdruck, abweichende Textierungen des Autographs (nur in einer Abschrift über-liefert) werden als Zweittext unterlegt.

In his Passion oratorio Christ on the Mount of Olives op. 85, Beethoven’s endeavors to follow in the 18th century tradition are evident, but at the same time he portrayed in music the dramatic situa-tion of the doubting Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and his arrest. At the same time the work leans towards contemporary opera, in addition to using a text by an opera librettist. With this, Bee-thoven laid himself open from the begin-ning to the criticism that his work was too operatic, too constrained by the external plot, the portrayal of Christ too human – criticism which has still not gone away. Yet we do not do justice to Beethoven’s work if we simply regard it as a successor to Graun’s Der Tod Jesu or even Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. Beethoven’s “Chris-tus am Ölberge” is characterized less by religious devotion and much more by the dramatic realization of a specifi c situation in the Passion story with deeply-felt mu-sical scenes. With its magnifi cent, almost operatic music, this is a different Passion oratorio which is defi nitely worth hearing and experiencing.

The edition follows the fi rst printed edition in music and text. Different text underlay in the autograph manuscript (only found in one copy) is underlaid as an alternative.
