Dear Parishioners,A few summers ago, 2006 to be exact, I came across a rath-
er shocking statement: “In a parish there are NO VOLUN-TEERS and NO DONATIONS.”
What?!? Doesn’t this writer know that a parish cannot sur-vive without these?
The point, I discovered, that was being made with this state-ment was that although parishes ask for volunteers and seek
as follows: if a parish is analogous to a family, then as with any family obligation – we don’t really volunteer; we don’t re-ally donate. Do we volunteer, for instance, to feed and clothe ourselves or the members of our family? Do we donate to this? Not at all. In-stead, we make prudent, prayerful decisions of what we can and cannot provide. Parents often have to say to children, “no I cannot increase your allowance right now” or “we will not be doing or purchasing that just yet; we cannot af-ford it.”
Although there is often a real willingness to
also realistic limits. So, too with respect to the family that is our parish.
Thinking about our parish as family, can be helpful in considering how you ought to provide for our parish.
As I mentioned in last weekend’s bulletin, continuing the
mentioned that our re-opening depends on your support. The number of ministers to serve in our new ministries as Greet-ers, Checkers, Ushers and Cleaners/Disinfectors, determines how many Masses we might be able to provide.
That said, I have always encouraged parishioners to discern carefully their use of their time, talent and treasure on behalf of the parish. It is only from the fruits of prayerful discern-ment that we can come to prudent, decisions of what each of us can provide and in what capacity.
such that they are already stretched. Even though they may truly desire to give more, they are prudently unable to do so. To them, I want to say: God truly honors that generous desire and so do I and our parish family.
need we have for new ministers. Nevertheless, there are any number of reasons that hinder them. One obvious and crucial reason is health. There are still substantial risks, even in phase 3, in simply attending Mass, no less serving in an unfamiliar ministry.
mos voluntarios; realmente no donamos.
3/Thirteenth Sunday
Another spiritual/theological reason for whether or not one should serve in any of these new ministries has to do with being called. Vocation is not just for priests. Call is an aspect of every ministry in the Church. Recall St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, chapter 12: there are many gifts but one Spirit. At the end of that chapter, he further reminds us, that not all the gifts and calls are the same.
Upon introducing these new ministries in our parish, it has become fairly clear, very quickly that though some would like to offer themselves for these ministries, they are simply not
the expression goes, made for the job.Let me explain. Except for cleaners/disinfectors, these
new ministries require the minister to be respectful, friend-ly but also fairly direct and directive. Checkers, greeters and ushers need to guide people without hesitation to the proper doors or places and even turn people away, for the safety of all, when a person has not previously made a reservation. [I know, we all really and truly wish it were otherwise, but sadly and painfully it. Isn’t.]
For some, being an enforcer, even of needed safety mea-sures, is simply too burdensome. Moreover, in order for these ministries to function, we need everyone in these new minis-tries to be able to easily and quickly teach themselves to utilize faithfully the computer program we use for scheduling, Min-istry Scheduler Pro.
I invite you, therefore, to engage in honest discernment. Many already know deep down in that these new ministries are too much of a stretch and challenge for them. While some can perform all these tasks with ease; for others they can prove somewhat stressful. That’s perfectly all right. Even if one tries it out, there is no harm in coming to realize that a
-derfully and comfortably as a lector or eucharistic minister in the past. These new ministries are too essential not to have the right people together, as a team, performing them.
Certainly, I invite every parishioner to ask honestly wheth-er they might be called, to one of these new ministries. As part of that discernment, it is important to seek the input of others. Do those who know you well think this is the right ministry for you? Would they encourage or dissuade you? All of us know that in some instances, there are people who think they are right for a certain role or task, but everyone else knows they have gifts in other areas instead.
ministerially to “donate” or “volunteer,” but please, please, -
nancial well-being along, your own particular gifts and talents, and the safety of our parishioners always need to be honored and respected. Let’s together discern wisely how we use our time, talent and treasure to support our parish family.
Peace,Fr. Joe
Paz,P. Joe

From the Desk of Michael SennettIf I had a quarter for every time someone questioned why I do not
leave the Catholic Church, I would have a boatload of money. Being openly transgender and Catholic, folks from nearly every background have quizzed me about why I remain. My response is consistent: God loves all of His children beyond human comprehension, and I am no exception. It’s a no brainer.
I must confess, however, that I’ve chosen to interpret this ques-tion at face value. Of course, God loves me; that is indisputable.
-face of what people are asking. It’s not a question of God’s love for me. Rather, people query my choice to participate in a Church that constantly disrespects the LGBTQ+ community and categorizes my existence as disordered. The questions is why on earth do I allow my-self to experience this treatment? Family, friends, and strangers have
Church. It would be dishonest to pretend I’ve never asked myself this question, but I can truthfully say I’ve never settled on an answer.
In today’s Gospel (Matthew 10: 37-42), we en-counter Jesus as he concludes giving the expecta-tions for discipleship. Christ instructs his apostles that they ought not love their mother or father, son or daughter more than him. Disciples should take up their crosses and alter their lives. His followers must obey these commands, lest they be unworthy. Living a Christian life will be demanding.
If Catholic teaching places immense value on family unity, why does Jesus advocate for family separation? In the biblical context, the Roman Empire conquered many tribes of communal people and imposed its rule, causing a societal shift toward individualism. The narrower focus impeded peoples’ ability to unite. In order to re-es-tablish community, Jesus encourages his apostles to break the cycle of individualism. Cultivating a relationship with Christ does not de-
-munity is to live in Christ. But community requires discomfort and the growth that comes from being challenged. This work is essential to ensure all are welcome. Existing as disciples compels us to give up the familiarity of life as we know it to join fully in communion with Christ.
With those teachings of Jesus in mind, I grapple today towards an answer to that original question above: why do I stay in a Church that fails to be the inclusive community of disciples it is intended to be? The corollary question is what is my vocation supposed to be as a Catholic trans man?
Recently a friend of mine shared the wonderful news that he is becoming a Jesuit. Joining in his glee, I wished him many blessings on his journey, and I meant that sincerely, but my heart also sank

in my brain: I can’t be married in the Catholic Church either. I was completely overcome by emotion.

discouraged. If I am afforded an opportunity to share my feelings, the reaction is generally that I am crying over spilled milk, that I’ve forced an issue out of a non-issue. Not only does the Church re-inforce the message that I am unworthy, but it silences my voice as well. So, why do I stay?
Christ’s presence in community, a gift bestowed from God, res-cues me from the margins. Although I have faced obstacles as a queer Catholic, my communities sustain me. I now realize it’s not about me enduring discomfort because of my identity in Catholic
but that it is my mission to live faithfully and joyously, even if others are uncomfortable.
Community, both in the Church and outside of it, gives me hope. June, designated as Pride Month, celebrates the fruits of activism for the LGBTQ+ community. During the Stonewall Riots of 1969, Black and brown queer women confronted injustice and began the
