As antidote to progressive self-destruction or self-mutilation accomplished via instrumental survival, Dialectic ofEnlightenment appealed to a critical mode of thin king tra nsg ress ingthe b ounds of ins tr ume nta l reason: a kind of recollective tho ugh t inwhich reason remembers its rootedness in nature, thus enlighteningitself about its own dialectic. " Thr oug h such recollection of nat ure inthe subject," we read, "a recollection containing within itself theignored tru th of all culture, enlig hte nme nt is basically opposed todomination. '4

Recollection of this kind, and its promise of a "reconciliat ion withnature ," beca me the consum ing focus of Adorno's later thou ght andworks. Without relinq uishi ng the claims of reason or rationalit y, hisNegative Dialectics appealed to the rational ego to open itself toradical "other ness" beyond the confines of instr ument al control--toa domain of "non-identity" transcending rational thought andcomprising both inner and outer nature. Similarly, his AestheticTheory adum brat ed a mode of creative behavior whi ch- -fa r fromsubjugating or manipulating the world--seeks to preserve andrecreate "objects" by inserting them in a series of novel constella-tions. The chief means of reconciliation in these works was theendeavor of "mimesis" or mimetic rappro cheme ntma term denotingneithe r mere external adap tati on nor subjective projection or inven-tion. 5 Despite its intri guing and imm ense ly suggestive power, oneshould note the tensional and deeply antinomial, if not paradoxical,cha rac ter of Adorno's later thought: Described as an "impulse" andthus located outside rational cognition, mimesis was supposed toserve as a bridge between consciousness and the unconscious,between reason and nature; in psychological terms, the categoryfuncti oned both as an in tern al or int raps ychi c capacity ("impulse")and as a mag net cat apulting the subject toward "otherness." On amore general plane, the same tension pervades Adorno's conceptionof "non-id entit y" or his notion of ego-other relations. For, how canrea son or the ego possibly be reconciled and even correlated with adomain which is defined as radica lly nonidentical or "other" th anthe rat iona l ego?
