Ephemeride des Gometen 1888. . . (Brooks Aug. '7) fur 1 2 ~ M. Z. Berlin.

Die starke Correction, welche meine Ephemeride in A. N. 2853 bereits erfordert (Hamburg Aug. 14: +3sS in AR., -I!O in Decl.), lasst befurchten, dass die Grundlagen, auf welche sich meine Elemente stutzen, nicht richtig sind. Dies scheint sich in der That zu bestatigen, da die zu Grunde gelegte Strassburger Beobachtung vom I I. August um 5' in AR. von der erst spater hier bekannt gewordenen nahe gleichzeitigen Beobachtung zu Kremsmunster abweicht, die letztere aber durch die Boss'schen Elemente gut dargestellt wird.

Der Fehler meiner Ephemeride in A. N. 2853 wird voraussichtlich in sehr betrachtlichem Maasse zunehmen, so dass ich es fur angezeigt gehalten habe, den Herren Beobachtern die nachfolgende neue Ephemeride, welche sich auf die Elemente von Prof. Boss grundet, zur Verfugung zu stellen.

Discovery of Encke's Comet (1888. . .) at Windsor N. S. Wales.*) On the evening of the 8th instant, with the help of an ephemeris kindly forwarded by Drs. Backlund and

Seraphimoff, I succeeded in finding this comet. In the band of twilight along the western horizon it appeared in the 41/a inch. equatorial as a small bright well condensed nebula without a nucleus. Three hasty comparisons with Lal. I 7336 and 17339 gave its position at 6h34m M.T. as a = 8h47"56' 6 = +12"49!5.

Unfortunately the comet will for some days be shut out from observation with the large equatorial by a portion of the observatory buildings, but as many positions as possible will be secured with the smaller instrument. The obser- vatior has been telegraphed to the three other Australian Observatories.
