Introduction Foreword Welcome to the manual of the Crash Recovery System 'Road Assist Edition', the mobile vehicle information database for the Roadside Assistance! The Crash Recovery System 'Road Assist Edition' allows second responders to recover crashed vehicles quickly and securely. Within a few seconds the system will show a datasheet with essential information about the location and handling procedures of the relevant components. 1. Installation 1.1 Introduction This chapter explains the installation of the Crash Recovery System. 1.2 Installation procedure Open the browser and go to: www.moditech.com. On Moditech’s website there are three types of the Crash Recovery to download. In this case, select the ‘Download CRS for Windows’ button.
Save the file on your computer and use a datacompression program (f.e. Winzip) to extract the software files. After extracting the files, the installation will start by clicking the ‘setup.exe’.

After selecting the file ‘setup.exe’ a wizard appears (see below). Follow the instructions here and enter the license code to install the Crash Recovery System ‘Road Assist Edition’. If you don’t have a license code, please enter the word ‘DEMO’ at this option to install the demo-version of the application.
After installing the application, the icon of the Crash Recovery System is visible on your desktop. Doubleclick the icon to start it.
When starting the application for the first time it needs to be activated. An Internet connection is neccesary to activate the system online.
The installation will end with the window below: ‘License code activated successfully’. The new end date is visible at the bottom of the message. Select ‘Close’ and the CRS is installed.

2. Operation instruction 2.1 Introduction This chapter explains all operating commands and menus for Windows. 2.2 Main window After launching the Crash Recovery System the main window appears:
Explanation buttons
Click the ‘Stop’ button to exit.
Click the ‘New passenger car’ button to open a new document and select a passenger car.
Click the ‘New truck’ button to open a new document and select a truck.
Click the ‘New bus’ button to open a new document and select a bus.
Click the ‘Regional options’ button to modify the language, the country and database.
Click the ‘Update’ button to install a new update on the CRS.

2.3 Settings Settings/ Preferences To access the advanced preferences, it is required to log in as Administrator. Changes made in the advanced preferences may stop the Crash Recovery System from functioning correctly. In case of doubt, contact the helpdesk of Moditech Rescue Solutions B.V. before making any changes to the configuration. Click the CRS icon in the upper left corner of the window to display the system menu (see picture).
Click the ‘Preferences’ menu item to display the preferences dialog (depending on the software edition and version the contents may vary from the dialog displayed below):

Prefences/General System Preferences - Country Selects the country of origin. This function is disabled for all Standard editions of the software. - Language Selects the language that will be used in all windows. - Database Selects the database that will be used for the vehicle selection. - License Selects the type of software protection used. - Graphics HTML SVG interactive graphic (Adobe SVG viewer) If Internet Explorer 8 or an earlier edition is installed on the system, this option is automatically selected. XHTML using embeded inline SVG support If Internet Explorer 9 or a later edition is installed on the system, this option is automatically selected. Vehicle selection settings - Quick selection Automatically jumps to the next selection level if only a single option is available during the manual selection. - Worst case selection Selection shows the vehicles with all available options only (indicated by question marks). Selection of the type of the vehicle (engine variant) is not necessary.
Buttons - Hide STOP button, Hide Regional Options button, Hide Update button Use the checkbox to show or hide the button in the main startup window. - Application button To open an external program within the Crash Recovery System use the checkbox to display the application button. Click ‘Browse’ for the location of the program executable. Prefences/CRS database Do not alter any other system settings on the ‘General’, ‘CRS database’ and ‘Remote connections tab’ without direction of the helpdesk of Moditech Rescue Solutions B.V.! Prefences/Remote connections CRS update server The checkbox ‘Automatically check for updates during startup’ enables automatic download of database updates during launch of the software. Requires the IP address or name of the CRS update server. Do not alter any other system settings on the ‘General’, ‘CRS database’ and ‘Remote connections’ tab without direction of the helpdesk of Moditech Rescue Solutions B.V.! Knowledge Base Server To add or download extra information, make sure the option ‘Check Knowledge Base Documents Online’ is enabled and all data below is entered.

Settings/ Update database Updating the database by Internet requires an Internet connection (preferably broadband). Two methods are available to initiate the update process: 1) Click the ‘Update’ button in the main window to start the update process. 2) Click the CRS icon (see below) in the upper left corner of the main window to display
the system menu. Click on the ‘Update database’ menu item to start the update process.
After clicking the “Update Database” button the window below appears. Click the “Check for updates” button to view the latest updates. If there are updates available the next step is to install the updates by clicking the “Install updates” button.

Settings/ Renew subscription To renew the Crash Recovery System subscription, it is required to log in as Administrator. Click the CRS icon in the upper left corner of the window to display the system menu (see picture). Click the ‘Renew subscription’ menu item to display the subscription renewal dialog as shown below (depending on the software edition and version the contents may vary from the dialog displayed here):
Make sure your computer is connected to the internet and click ‘Yes’ at the window that appears, renew the CRS license online.
There appears a screen with the message that the license is renewed successfully. Make sure the new expiration date is right en select ‘Close’ to finish the renewing.

Attention: An error message ‘Online renewal not permitted’ appears when the license has not been set for online renewal by Moditech or the responsible dealer.
If no Internet connection is available, the license can be renewed manually. Press ‘Close’ on the online renewal dialog, follow the instructions and click the ‘OK’ button.
Step 1: Select the correct software edition from the available options: Step 2: Select the subscription ending date. Step 3: Contact the helpdesk of Moditech Rescue Solutions B.V. to complete the renewal of your subscription. The software is switched off automatically when the subscription expires.

Settings/ Remove subscription To remove the Crash Recovery System subscription, it is required to log in as Administrator. Click the CRS icon in the upper left corner of the window to display the system menu (see picture). Click the ‘Remove subscription’ menu item to start the process of removing the subscription.
Make sure you have got an internet connection and remove the CRS online. Click ‘Yes’.
At the end, please note the license code. This is important to finish the next installation on the other device. Select ‘Close’ and the CRS license is removed successfully.

2.4 Manual selection procedure new vehicle (Lite, STD and RDW Edition) This chapter explains the manual selection procedure of a new vehicle
Click one of the vehicle buttons to start a manual selection. In this case the procedure of the ‘New passenger car’ is shown. The screen below appears.
Explanation buttons
Click the “Close Document” button to close the current document. Depending on the amount of open documents you will automatically return to the main window or the previous document. Click the ‘Regional options’ button to modify the language, the country and database. Click the ‘Manual Select’ button to select a vehicle by make, model, bodystyle and modelyear. This selection method is available in all software editions.
Click the button "License plate selection" to select a vehicle model using the license plate number. The following window appears. This functionality is only available in the RDW editions. Click the “Next document” button to switch between active documents. This button is only available when more than one document is open.

Click the ‘Manual Select’ button to select a vehicle by make, model, bodystyle and modelyear. This selection method is available in all software editions.
After clicking the make – in this case the BMW – there appears a list with all vehicle models.
After selecting the right vehicle model, there appears a list with the possible engine variants. Select the ‘?’ when the vehicle has no visible type of designation. The ‘?’ will open the vehicle graphic showing the maximum possible equipment. We call this the ‘Worst case model’.

The next screen shows the bodysyle. In this case there is one possible bodystyle to select: the ‘4dr sedan’.
The last screen in the selection procedure is about the modelyear of the car. In this screen there is also one option to chose.
Attention: if you have made a wrong step during the vehicle selection procedure, you easily can navigate back to one of the previous steps. For example: if you click the ‘BMW’ in the selection procedure-bar below, you will see all the BMW vehicle models again.

If the selected model is a hybrid-, electric- or hydrogen vehicle, a warning screen will appear immediately. This warning screen gives important information about the vehicle.
After clicking the ‘Cross’ button in the lower right corner, or the ‘Hide info’-button, the warning screen disappears and the selected vehicle is visible. If the vehicle isn’t a hybrid-, electric- or hydrogen model, the datasheet will appear directly.

2.5 Datasheet Datasheet/ Buttons In the datasheet all the visible components are clickable for more information (STD and RDW Edition). In many cases there are extra digital pictures of these components. This chapter shows the explanation about the datasheet and its buttons.
Datasheet/ Show Legend Click the button ‘Show legend’ to understand what each color means. The legend explains the component groups used in the CRS information sheet.
Click the ‘Cross’ button, or the ‘Hide legend’ button to remove the Legend.

Datasheet/ Show info As mentioned, if the selected model is an a hybrid-, electric- or hydrogen vehicle, there will appear immediately a warning screen. But clicking the ‘Show info’-button will also show this warning screen.
Datasheet/ Show deactivation This option will give the second responder a step-by-step explanation about how to disable a vehicle. At every step, pictures will bring more clarity to the procedure, so the second responder will recognize the step quickly.

Datasheet/ Hide roof Click the ‘Hide roof’ button. The roof of the vehicle with its integrated components will be hidden. Now all components inside the vehicle become clickable. The roof is re-displayed by clicking the ‘Show roof’ button.
Datasheet/ Hide side After clicking the ‘Hide side’ button, the side of the vehicle with its integrated components will be hidden. The side is re-displayed by clicking the ‘Show side’ button.

Datasheet/ Hide seats After clicking the ‘Hide seats’ button, the seats of the vehicle with its integrated components will been hidden. The seats are re-displayed by clicking the ‘Show roof’ button.

Datasheet/ Extra information button With this software application it is possible to both add and download extra information about a vehicle. First, check the remote connection settings of the Crash Recovery System. Go to ‘Preferences’ and click ‘Remote connections’. Make sure you have enabled the option ‘Check Knowledge Base Documents Online’.
Once that is done, the extra information button is visible in the datasheets of the Crash Recovery System. Click the button in the lower right corner (see image below).

A new menu appears. If specific information about this vehicle is already added, it is visible directly. In this case (Peugeot 508 Hybrid 4) there is information available in the category ‘Electronics’, see below.
The ‘Extra info menu’ contains pages with extra information catorigized in six groups: the exterior, suspension, electronics, engine, service and fuel. All extra information is available to download as PDF-format.

Submit information With the button ‘Submit info’ it is possible to add information to a specific vehicle in the database of the Crash Recovery System ‘Road Assist Edtion’.
When you click the option ‘Submit info’, your default mail system will start immediately. After that, you can enter the information and send it.
Adding extra information requires a connection to a local server. For more information please contact Moditech Rescue Solutions BV, [email protected] | +31 226 412 900. If you want to know how to add and manage information to a specific datasheet, please check the user guide ‘Knowledgebase manager’.

Download the information Beside submitting new information, it is also possible to download and view the existing information of the specific vehicle. Click in the menu ‘Knowledge Base Documents’ the group ‘Electronics’.
The image below shows an example of a PDF-file of the group ‘Electronics’ for the vehicle Peugeot 508 Hybrid 4.
Explanation buttons:
With this button it is possible to move a page backward.

Datasheet/ Components
This chapter explains the five most common component-icons in the Crash Recovery System ‘Road Assist Edition’. A list of all available components, like the fusebox, battery, xenon lights and HV components is visible at page 27.
Recovery
Select this icon to get more information about the recovery of the vehicle. The image below shows the information screen that appears.
The red buttons in the screen above shows the added figures. In this case, the first image will show you the location of the towing hooks in the baggage compartment.
Clicking the arrow will show you a screen with information about towing a vehicle. Click the ‘Cross’ button to remove the ‘Recovery procedure’.

Electric Parking brake Click the Electric Parking brake-icon and there will appear a deactivation procedure about how to release the electric parking brake.
Explanation other buttons
OBD (On-board diagnostics)
The OBD-icon shows an information screen about the On-board Diagnostics. Automatic gearbox The Automatic gearbox-icon shows a step by step procedure about how to release the parking lock. Jump-starting
Clicking the Jump-starting-icon will show an information screen about the jump-starting procedure. Inertia switch
Select the Inertia-icon to get more information about this vehicle component.

2.6 Licenseplate request (RDW Edition only)
Clicking the ‘Licenseplate request’ shows a window where a license plate number can be entered.
Below is an example of the screen where a license plate number can be entered.
Click the ‘DVLA’ button after entering the vehicle license or press enter. The license is retrieved from the license database. The correct vehicle model is selected from the CRS database as accurately as possible.
Use the “Backspace” key to erase the last character entered.
Use the “Clear all” key to remove the whole license number.

Warranty Moditech Rescue Solutions B.V. warrants for one year from date of installation and/or purchase any of its products, which do not perform satisfactorily due to defect caused by faulty material or workmanship. Moditech’s obligation under this warranty is limited to the repair or replacement of products which are defective and which have not been misused, carelessly handled, or defaced by repair or repairs made or attempted by others. This instruction manual is an integral part of the license agreement and the general conditions of Moditech Rescue Solutions B.V. For any warranty issues not described above we refer you to the general conditions of Moditech Rescue Solutions B.V. and the License agreement. Liability The information and data in the Crash recovery System are compiled from reliable sources within the Automotive industry. Moditech Rescue Solutions B.V. has performed all the necessary steps to ensure the data is correct and corresponds to specific vehicle models. However due to selection and identification errors or due to vehicle production modifications, production faults or missing items in the software may occur. Moditech Rescue Solutions B.V. claims no responsibility and cannot be held liable for physical or material damage or loss due to one or more of the causes as described above. The liability of Moditech Rescue Solutions B.V. for damage of the licensee, regardless its cause, is at all times limited to the cost of the license paid by the licensee for use of the Crash Recovery System software. Moditech Rescue Solutions B.V. cannot be held responsible and/or liable for indirect damage and/or resulting damage. Licensee may only claim compensation to the extent as described above for any damage resulting from a failure in the software when Moditech Rescue Solutions B.V. has failed to correct the error within a reasonable time frame after notification by the licensee. The licensee is expected to follow the instructions in this instruction manual during operation of the software. All other use of the software than described in the instructions in the owners manual or the execution of these instructions in the wrong order can not lead to the liability of Moditech Rescue Solutions B.V. Moditech Rescue Solutions B.V. does not assume any responsibility and/or liability for software installations that are not updated to the most recent version. Each claim of the licensee becomes void unless legal action is taken within a year after the failure and its cause was reported to Moditech Rescue Solutions B.V.
