Christmas Traditions in Germany The celebration of Christmas throughout Germany varies by region and we could fill these pages describing all of them, but here are some well-known traditions that are worth sharing at this time of the year: Advent marks the beginning of the build-up to Christmas, starting on the Sunday after the 26th of November. The Advent Wreath (Adventskranz) is a very popular decoration in German homes. It consists of a circular wreath of pine-branches with four candles on it. On the first Sunday in Advent, the first candle on the wreath is lit; two candles are lit on the second; three on the third and all four on the fourth Sunday, immediately prior to Christmas. For children the highlight of Advent is St. Nicholas’ Day (Nikolaustag) on 6th of December. Some traditions include children leaving hay and straw and carrot or apple for St. Nicholas’ horses, and putting a shoe or boot outside their bedroom door, window or by the fireplace on the evening of 5th of December, hoping to find it full of sweets, biscuits, nuts and fruit the next morning. In appearance St. Nicholas is often dressed like a bishop: red gown, with a white beard, boots and a sack. The origin of the Advent Calendar can be traced back to the 19th Century; it was used by German Lutherans as a way of physically counting down the days of Advent beginning on Dec. 1st. The first known Advent calendar was handmade in 1851. The first printed Advent calendars date back to the early 1900s. By 1958 chocolate was found in many of the calendars. Each year Christmas markets (Weihnachtsmarkt) spring up around Germany in the weeks before the Christmas holidays, signaling the beginning of Advent. Each Christmas market specializes on local delicacies as well as serving as a festive meeting place for locals and a market for traditional products, homemade Christmas ornaments and decorations, crafts and toys. Glühwein is a hot, spiced wine typically served at Christmas markets; it warms you up as you walk around the outside markets on those cold days in December. Germania proudly holds an annual Christmas market called Christkindlmarkt each November in an effort to bring its members to Germany in spirit. In Germany gingerbread is made in a soft form, called Lebkuchen, and a harder form particularly associated with carnivals and street markets such as the Christmas markets that occur in many German towns. The hard gingerbread is made in decorative shapes, which are then further decorated

with sweets and icing. The most well-known traditional shape gingerbread is cut into is the gingerbread man. Gingerbread is considered an art form in Nuremberg, Ulm and Pulsnitz in Germany. The gingerbread house became popular in Germany after the Brothers Grimm published their fairy tale collection which included "Hansel and Gretel" in the 19th century. Early German settlers brought this lebkuchenhaeusle - gingerbread house - tradition to the Americas. A special kind of Lebkuchen is the delicious thick and chewy Christmas cookies called Aachener Printen which are manufactured around the City of Aachen and famous in the Rhine valley. A Stollen is a loaf-shaped fruitcake, powdered with icing sugar on the outside. The cake is usually made with chopped candied fruit and/or dried fruit, nuts and spices. It is a traditional German cake, usually eaten during the Christmas season. Germania has been known to serve Stollen at its annual Christmas dinner party and sell it at its Christkindlmarkt.

The tradition of decorating an evergreen tree at Christmas can be traced back to 16th Century Northern Germany. A Tannenbaum is a fir tree (die Tanne), or Christmas tree (der Weihnachtsbaum) . "O Tannenbaum" (Oh Christmas Tree) is a Christmas carol of German origin and one you will undoubtedly hear at Germania’s adult and children’s Christmas parties.

Christmas Eve (der Heilige Abend, literally the "Holy Evening") is the climax of the German Christmas. Shops and offices close at mid-day and most people spend the afternoon at home in preparation for the later celebrations. Depending on a family’s religion they will attend either a late afternoon Church service or a midnight service. At home, with the children playing out of sight, the tree is decorated with such items as straw stars, foil and glass decorations, apples, gilded nuts, ring biscuits, Lebkuchen, chocolate or marzipan decorations, wooden angels, pine cones, tinsel, and wax candles or electric lights. Presents are placed either under the tree, with the crib if there is one, or else on the "present table" (der Gabentisch). When everything is prepared, normally just after dark, a little bell is rung as a signal that the children may come in to see the lighted tree and receive their presents (die Bescherung). Before the exchange of gifts takes place, families spend time together and eat a simple meal of traditional foods and goodies; the Christmas story is often read by the light of the candles, favorite Christmas carols are sung, and poems are recited. The glass pickle ornament is a tree decoration that comes with a story of its tradition: For good luck, the pickle is the last ornament to be hung on the tree with mother and father hiding it deep in the green boughs among the other ornaments. When the children are allowed to view the splendor of the decorated tree they gleefully begin searching for the pickle ornament; whoever finds that special ornament first receives an extra little gift left by St. Nicholas for the most eager child. It remains a mystery if the pickle custom as origins in “old world” Germany based on myth or legend because many modern day families in Germany do not recognize or have not even heard of the Christmas Pickle (Weihnachtsgurke). December 25th is known as the "First Day of Christmas" (der erste Weihnachtstag) and, in comparison with the 24th of December, is a quiet day, often spent at home or with close relatives. Goose is still widely eaten for the main meal, but is by no means obligatory. December 26th, the "Second Day of Christmas" (der zweite Weihnachtstag) has much the same function as the day before, being another public holiday and a day of family reunions or outings and delivering gifts.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Jon J. Wagner: We are nearing a close to our 160th year as a depository of German Heritage in the Hudson Valley. Poughkeepsie became home to the Germania Singing Society in 1850 when Adolph Kuhn set out on a fateful trip here from New York City. Countless immigrants with German backgrounds made their way to the United States by way of Ellis Island and other ports of entry. We are eternally grateful that many made the trip upstate and found a home in Poughkeepsie. So many of those German Americans and their families became a part Germania and made us what we are today. My own Grandfather Max William Wagner came from

Chemnitz to Yorkville in Manhattan, then to Poughkeepsie and opened the Bartan Brewery. My Grandfather was an Elk here in Poughkeepsie (BPOE Lodge 275) and I hope to research our past records to determine whether or not he preceded me at Germania. Jon’s letter continued from page 2: We have continued the celebration of our heritage throughout our 160th year;

anchored firmly in German song. We are all thankful for the dedication of our singers to this long history.

The 160th Gala celebration was a fitting way to celebrate this special occasion. Gourmet food, great music

and dancing and of course a beverage or two made for an unforgettable evening.

The Mid Atlantic Kinderfest was held at Germania during our 160th year so hundreds of Schuhplattler’s

young and old got to experience Germania, our history and our hospitality.

This year’s Oktoberfest exceeded all expectations thanks to the dedication of our members. Our ancestors

would be proud to see the way we celebrated our heritage along with our Mid‐Hudson Valley neighbors.

Numerous dinners, parties, dances and events highlighted our shared camaraderie throughout the year.

What a great way to celebrate 160 years of Germania. We now turn our attention to our future. We have been increasing our membership steadily and look forward to our newest members pitching in when and where they can. Please tell your friends and neighbors about us, Brag a little about your experiences at Germania. It would be great to attract families with kids that might show an interest in singing, dancing, or soccer. Building “depth” in our membership is a logical step toward healthy growth. Make a New Year’s resolution to become an ambassador for Germania and attract new people to our club. Thanks to Karen Rose we now have a Facebook presence to supplement our Web Site. Let your friends and neighbors know about it, perhaps they will like what they see and want to learn more about us. Some of our members recently took it upon themselves to submit Germania photos to a Poughkeepsie Journal keepsake book project about our area. Hopefully we gained some exposure with that publication. A continued volunteer effort to catalog photos and documents about our club would be a worthwhile future project and a learning experience for new and prospective members. If you are interested in doing so, please let me know. Embarking on our second 160 years will be a challenge for a while due to the economy, but I know that we are up to the challenge. There is much work to be done and planning is underway for an even greater 2011. Hopefully you are ready to pitch in and will help to make Germania an even greater club!

CONVERSATIONAL GERMAN will begin again on Thursday, January 6, 2011 from 6-6:45 pm. Frau Karen Wagner will teach time, shopping, greetings, travel language, and other themes as the class deems important. Homework will not be assigned. Practicing is strongly encouraged. GERMANIA ROD & GUN CLUB A special thank you goes out to Herbie Puberl for recently bringing to Germania a stack of old POSTED signs and sharing information he remembers from when Germania had a small gun club. One of the signs has been framed and is now hanging on the club house wall. Circa 1979, William Scheitz, Karl Wilke, Robert Rose Jr., Herbert Puberl and a few others formed the Germania Rod & Gun Club. They met once a month at the old Germania Hall in the city of Poughkeepsie and they posted about 50 acres of land at the Pepacton Reservoir in the Town of Andes in Delaware County about 10 miles southwest of Margaretville. After the men in the gun club would get their deer it was prepared by Waltemor Riesenberg and Ernest Dorsche at Germania Hall for the Men Singers for dinner on their Thursday night practices. Unfortunately after only two successful hunting seasons the land was sold and the gun club dissolved. If there are any Germania members who were a part of the gun club or anyone else who remembers when this gun club was in existence, we would like to hear from you! If any of our current Germania members would like to start this hunt club up again, Christopher Blatz would be willing to run and oversee the start up until such time as membership permits election of officers. IN LOVING MEMORY Our deepest sympathy to members Ed & Marion Bauer on the loss of their son ANDREW P. BAUER, 35, of Bronx, New York who passed away on October 9, 2010. Andrew is survived by his sister Sherry and brothers David, Tom, Jim, Michael and Daniel. Andrew danced with the Germania Almrausch Kindergruppe in the 1980’s. The Soccer Club is saddened to report the passing of former Germania soccer player JASON DURAND. Jason lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday, November 9, 2010; he leaves a wife and two small children. He will be missed and we mourn his loss. A remembrance goes to the family and friends of past member and singer, TAG THAYER who passed away on September 28th in Red Hook. Our volunteers can take a well-deserved rest! Unfortunately, due to me going off on a cruise (no I was not on the ship that was stranded in the Ocean) I have not been able to work out the menu with Darcy. In the September 26th edition of Smart Life in the Poughkeepsie Journal, under Picture the Past, to our delight, we found an article and picture of member and retired Colonel OTTO SCHAEDLICH. It was taken of him in 1945 during basic training at Fort Sill, Ohio. Otto wrote that the experience served him well in his rise through the ranks by reminding him of the many menial tasks subordinates have to perform in support of successful military operations. In Dutchess County Focus October 2nd, there is an article about the sewing group at First Lutheran Evangelical Church that makes and donates blankets to those in need and pictured is FRIEDA POPP. In the Journal’s Out & About of October 12th (Lifestyles section), you could find a wonderful picture of members RAY BAUMANN and FR. PETER KIHM sharing some stories and smiles at the Germania Oktoberfest. In the Dutchess County Chamber’s publication ‘The Bottom Line’ dated November 2010, you will find a picture of JON WAGNER and Chamber President along with Joel Miller cutting the ribbon for the grand opening of our recent Oktoberfest in September.

GET WELL GREETINGS: MARION BAUER, accordion accompanist for the Germania Almrausch Kindergruppe and dancer with the adult group, is recovering from a recent knee operation. PAULA DEMARCO, Bartender Extraordinaire and daughter of Anne and Mark Delaney is recovering from a serious illness. Honorary Member and Singer, KARL BERGHOFER, went to Germany to seek further treatment for his serious health problem. Please keep these fellow members in your prayers.

SCHUHPLATTLER NEWS. Germania Almrausch SV ended this year’s dance season at St. John Parish in Woodstock, NY where the parishioners are celebrating a milestone anniversary this year and welcomed retired Archbishop of New York, Cardinal Egan as their honored guest for an Oktoberfest themed celebration after Mass on October

23rd; we were happy to perform there along with friend and accordion player Ed Hendela. On Saturday November 20th we attended the Stiftungsfest celebration of Alpenrose Schuhplattler Verein in Manheim, PA at the Lancaster Leiderkranz. We wish a speedy recovery to our member and friend Marion Bauer who recently had knee surgery, and express our deepest sympathy to her on the passing of her son Andrew. As we write in for this newsletter we are looking forward to Germania’s annual Christmas party which always proves to be great fun and a great year-end celebration after several weeks of hard work during the Oktoberfest season. GERMANIA BLUE & WHITE SOCCER CLUB NEWS: The new seasons have started. Three Germania Soccer teams have started the 2010-2011 season. The Over 40, Over 30 and Open teams have started out great. Last year the Over 40 and Over 30 teams made runs for the state championship and this year we aim to win it all. The Open team looks great this year too. Check out the game schedules and come watch Germania play. Over 50 league: This year Germania started an over 50 league on Friday nights at the field. John Jorgensen spearheaded the campaign to get four over 50 teams playing in the fall and things are going great. Those of you that still have your soccer shoes in the closet can get them out and play on Fridays. Field and grounds work: A big thank you goes out to all the players and members that helped out at a work day held on September 19th. Ryan Cornish led a team that worked to seed, fertilize, and spread sand on the soccer field. This is in an effort to make Germania's field the best in the Hudson Valley. Soccer club vice president, Jeff Contelmo led a team to repair a rock wall along the Germania grounds. Many thanks to members of all three teams for coming out and helping. Soccer Club Holiday Party: The Germania Soccer club is having their Holiday dinner on, Saturday, December 11, 2010. The meal will be your choice of Prime rib or Salmon for $25 per person. All Germania members are welcome to join the soccer teams for a nice get together to celebrate the holidays. Contact soccer club president Joe Ulrich if you'd like to attend. Hungarian Goulash: The soccer club would like to thank George Magloczki for treating the soccer club to some authentic Hungarian goulash after the game on Oct 2nd. We've never seen a pot so big and it was full! Gerhard Stoetzel donated a pan of chicken as well. Lazlo Toth and George put together the gathering that was second to none and we thank them. Members of the opposing team were welcomed to enjoy the food which made it a very nice afternoon. Soccer Club hats on SALE: Need a new hat? The soccer club has hats embroidered with the 1958 soccer club logo. Hats are $15 and make great Christmas presents. All are welcome. The Singers would like to thank Margarethe Killmer and Monica Jorgensen and all the kitchen help and servers for the Fall Concert held November 7th. It was a delicious dinner, and a special thank you to Helmut Loibl for dessert. It was a beautiful day. Thank you Barbel Zehnbauer and Helga Nowak-Razey for the table decorations; each table was decorated to match the operetta melodies we sang along with information on the composer. It was well received. Thanks to Helga Baker for the selection of music, George Calabrese for playing the Viola, and Helen for playing piano. The Germania Board of Directors has asked the Singers to run two Friday dinners; they will be Friday January 28th and February 25th and information will be available soon. The holiday season is upon us. Helga Baker would like all to know that Kinderchor (our children’s chorus) is practicing for the Weihnachtsgottesdienst on Dec. 19th at 2 PM at the First Lutheran Church. They also like to go caroling with the adult choir; last year they were much appreciated by our Germania members whom we visited. They practice on Saturday mornings and we welcome new children to join them. Get well wishes are going to Fran Kalbl, we are glad to hear you are feeling better. DER GEMUTLICHE TANZ VEREIN

Beginner Dance lessons will be held every Thursday beginning January 6, 2011 at 7:00 PM. Lessons usually go on for 3 hours with plenty of breaks in between. The lessons are geared for the beginners; we keep repeating the basic steps over and over again which makes everybody comfortable on the dance floor. Besides your basic ballroom dances, we are also doing some line dancing such as Fliegerlied, electric slide, and cha-cha slide; we hope to introduce some new dances this year. Everybody is welcome, any age

or gender, and partners are not a requirement. Please join us. You are not required to be a member of Germania but usually people become members very quickly; there is no fee charged for these lessons and after one lesson people love to come back for more. Germania Building and Grounds News (9-22-10 to 10-6-10) by Rich Pointer and Herb Wenskus A really big “Thank You” to all who have helped in the following jobs: Reconstruction of Germania mail box and evergreen bush: A high speed police chase resulted in the total destruction of the Germania mail box post by the perpetrators car. He also uprooted an evergreen tree. Cal Baker replanted the evergreen and temporarily mounted the old box onto a sawhorse. One day, at the end of September, several members went into action. The box was donated by Gerhard Stoetzel. Herbert Wenskus and Richard Pointer drove to the store and purchased a post. In the meantime Christopher Blatz and Gene Schlag assembled the box and dug the hole. The post was assembled and put into position; the post office had been consulted about the height of the mail box. The hole around the post was filled with cement and leveled. This was real teamwork and fun with a feeling of accomplishment. Basement: Thank you to the volunteers that cleared bulk from basement: Herb Wenskus, Richard Pointer, and Gerhard Stoetzel and to those that straightened out the basement: Herb Wenskus, Richard Pointer, Chris Blatz, and Eugene Schlag. Much more work is needed, and funds for more shelving are needed; and we need more shelving. Thank you to the volunteers that improved the basement lighting: Chris Blatz and Eugene Schlag. Electric outlets were installed in the basement as needed by Herb Wenskus, Richard Pointer, Chris Blatz and Eugene Schlag at a cost of $0.00 Richard Pointer repaired the light switch in the men’s bathroom at a cost of $0.00 Work on rock wall has started! Although we do not have a complete list of volunteers I would like to say thanks to the members of the soccer team who have started rebuilding the Rock Wall. We anticipate that this will be completed in the near future. Thank you to Richard Pointer for a temporary backflow valve repair at a cost of $0.00. The final repair will be discussed at the next B&G meeting. Germania Garden beds: Although I do not have the names of the person or persons that maintain the gardens they made things look great and their work in that area is appreciated. Thank you to the volunteers that worked on the Shelter motion detector light: Richard Pointer and Chris Blatz. The double spot light was remounted and now detects any motion and stays on for 5 minutes.

Germania Golf Cart Fund Raising by Building and Grounds Committee Chairman; Cal Baker The golf cart was given to the Germania Club at the end of the 2009 Oktoberfest by John Jorgensen and family. Thanks again John. Our use of this cart is many fold: grounds keeping, shuttling back and forth between the shelter and club house, and most of all it is used around the clock during the 5 days of the Oktoberfest and for Fest setup and removal. During the summer our Power Source (batteries) for the cart went bad. Funds for the Batteries were not available in time for the Oktoberfest. To meet this challenge a special “Family Rescue” fund was set up. Special thanks to the following families that came to the rescue of our golf cart: Ed and Carol Ann Fischer Germania of Pok. Inc. Sufficient funds were collected and the batteries and cables were replaced by the Building Committee. Efforts are under way to add lamps, taillights and a horn to the cart. We hope to replace the windshield in the near future. A special “Thank You” from the building and grounds committee to everyone who helped with the Oktoberfest. Volunteers are welcome to help the building and grounds committee, on repair issues and future projects. Everyone is also welcome to attend the Wednesday evening committee meetings held at the club house at 7PM.
