The Passive
This is a report from a scientific magazine of the 1990s. Use the correct active or passive forms of the
verbs in brackets to complete the sentences. Look out for signal words.
Since the catastrophe of Tchernobyl, which ______________________________ (shock) the whole
world in 1986, scientists all over the world ______________________________ (try) to prove that
alternative energies that ______________________________ (produce) electricity can easily
______________________________ (develop) and must ______________________________
(sponsor) more intensively than before. The question, however, ______________________________
(remain) if atomic power is really the great disaster for mankind.
The fact is that all the atomic power plants cannot ______________________________ (switch off)
completely because 35% of our energy for private households and for our industry
______________________________ (currently/come) from these plants. Although nuclear energy
______________________________ (involve) great dangers to our health, the risk of being
______________________________ (kill) by an atomic disaster is relatively low. Our sources of
energy, like wind, the sun and water ______________________________ (test) for years, but the
traditional energies like coal, oil and nuclear power ______________________________ (be) still
efficient. Unfortunately, the problem of storing the atomic waste safely
______________________________ (still/not/solve), which is obviously the most dangerous
disadvantage.
Maybe it ______________________________ (take) hundreds of years to find a solution to this
problem, maybe it ______________________________ (never/solve) at all.
Complete the text with the necessary passive forms of the verbs in brackets.
Biometric security?
For many centuries, keys have been a common part of everyday life. But keys and combination locks
could eventually 1 … (make) obsolete by a new kind of technology: biometrics. Some time in the
future, a person’s entry into rooms and buildings 2 … (control) by special computers that 3 … (design)
to recognize personal characteristics such as fingerprints or voice. If the computer (or biometric
machine) 4 … (show) the correct “personal data”, the door 5 … (automatically open). But permission
to enter 6 … (not/give) to any “unauthorized” person trying to work the machine.
The advantages of such a system are obvious. Copies 7 … (can/make) of keys, combination locks 8 …
(may/crack) and the computerized cards that 9 … (often/use) for hotel bedrooms 10 … (frequently/
lose or steal). Biometric locks would mean that buildings 11 … (could not/break into) so easily, and of
course no more problems 12 … (would/cause) by “forgetting your key”.
In the USA biometric lock systems 13 … (produce and sell) at the moment. So far they 14 …
(mainly/install) in banks, research laboratories, and other institutions with a major interest in
security. The most common version of the new computer is the “fingerprint scanner”, which 15 …
(now/introduce) for domestic use in Japan. Because of the high price, it 16 … (not/expect) to be
installed in many American homes yet, but in time biometric security systems 17 … (probably/make)
widespread use of.
