I Indian Red Cross Society is very much thankful to the Gujarat Narmadada

Fartilizer Corporation for continues support for Thalassemia/Sickle Cell Programme of School going students of Bharuch District. GNFC has sanctioned Rs. 1,23,30,000/- in two phase for the said screening. The Red Cross has screened 41101 students as per the following details.

The Inaugural Programme of GNFC Supported Thalassemia Screening

Programmes in Schools and Colleges of Bharuch District was held on 24th August 2009 at St Xavier High School Bharuch.

The Programme was inaugurated Jointly by Dr. Rajendra Kumar-DDO-Bharuch, Shri- R T Bhargav-Gen, Manager –GNFC-Bharuch, Dr. Mdhuben R Naik Hon. Gen Secretary –Indian Red Cross Society Gujarat State Branch, Shri- B N Rajgour-District Education Officer Bhuj, and other dignitaries representing GNFC and Red Cross.

Dr. Mdhuben R Naik, in her inaugural Address highlighted more on Red Cross’s efforts in Screening and other interventions in reducing the Thalassemic Births in the state and stated that Red Cross Gujarat state branch is number one in the country for screening the maximum number of people for Thalassemia. She also appreciated the Officials of GNFC for supporting for such a noble cause with a significant Financial Grant to cover the entire district of Bharuch.

Shri R. T. Bhargav - in his key note address emphasized more on the need for Corporates like GNFC for supporting such meaning Programmes. He appreciated Red Cross Team for their commendable contribution for reducing the backlog of Thalassemic Screening in the state.

Background of the Project. In order to scale up the Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Screening Programme of Red Cross Gujarat State Branch in the Southern part of Gujarat, a project proposal was submitted to GNFC for funding under CSR –Programme. Subsequently the Project got sanctioned for screening 62400 students of 157 schools and colleges of Bharuch district with a total approved funding of Rs.1,87,20,000/-. The approved project was to complete in two phases, ie, 50% of the work has to be completed in the financial year 2009-2010 and thereafter the remaining 50% in the year 20010-2011.

Accordingly a planning was made to complete the approved project in the given time period and a detail survey of all the schools and colleges of Bharuch district was done by the Programme Team of Red Cross Thalassemia and Research Centre under the guidance of Mr. Prakash Parmar-The Project Director. List of 157 schools and Colleges to be covered under the project were prepared and First Screening camp was organized at St. Xavier School –Bharuch along with the inauguration Programme of the Project. A total of 1800 students in the age group of 5 to 15 years were tested for Thalassemia and sickle Cell in the same Day.

Thalassemia Screening in Bharuch City:

Indian Red Cross Society Gujarat State Branch, Ahmedabad at the initial stage started Thalassemia Prevention Programme in the Secondary and Primary schools of Bharuch City as identified through our baseline survey. Apart from collecting blood samples necessary information about the subject has also been provided to local teachers, officers, and reputed members of the society and also to the principals of the schools . The students of the Concerned Schools of Bharuch City have been also given the awareness of the Thalassemia Prevention Programme. The details of the Blood Samples Collected from the Students of the Secondary and Primary schools are as under:- Secondary Schools:-

We could collect the details of all the Secondary and Primary Schools situated in he city of Bharuch . On receipt of the information, we have made planning to start the Programme and fixed the dates and time for the concerned Schools with the support of the District Collector Bharuch, District Education Officer, District Development Officer, and other related Officers. To make the programme successful and create awareness in the society, Broachers and

various literatures regarding Thalassemia and Sickle Cell have been distributed to the local medias, principals of the schools, DEO, DDO and reputed social workers. The Counseling has been also done before the Thalassemia Prevention Programme started in presence of the Principals/Teachers and Students.

Primary Schools:-

IRCS has collected the details of the Primary Schools situated in Bharuch City as well as Bharuch Taluka and then made a planning to start the Thalassemia Prevention Programme in Primary Schools. To make the programme more successful and effective, a meeting was held with the Principals of the Primary Schools in Taluka Panchayat Office. The Broachers and other literatures on the Thalassemia were distributed among the Students of Primary Schools so that the programme can be made more

successful and effective after the consent of the parents of the Primary School Students. The meeting was also held for Thalassemia Prevention Programme in the villages so that the people may be aware of the programme. At the initial stage, we could finish the target of the Zaderhwar Group, Shukla Tirth Group, and Zanor Group Primary Schools. The was very much successful with the support of the Principal of the schools, Social Workers and Parents of the students of these Schools. The details are given below:-
