Ilman Harun

Installation art is an art that install, unify, and construct some objects that are considered to refer to a certain meaning. As a product of contemporary art, this kind of art also has a close relation to the world of architecture. With its abstract characteristic, installation art can even invent the identity of a room. To PRASETYA Online, a student of achitecture engineering 2006, Ilman Harun, describe the definition of "installation art" which is the theme of the event "Open Arch 2010". Through the event, Ilman and his friends in Architecture Student Association try to introduce installation art to the public.

"Nowadays, installation art has never been introduced in public because mostly are exhibited exclusively at in-door spaces," he said. "Even many students of architecture are still uncommon with installation art ", he added. However, Ilman added, this ignorance was not hit the students in two cities of architecture center in Indonesia i.e. Bandung and Yogyakarta. "In this two cities, exhibition of installation art are often done", he said.

Through his efforts, it leads the existence of architecture in Malang. In Open Arch 2010, HMA collaborated with students of art and architectural engineering around Malang and also Indonesia Architects Association (IAI) of Malang branch. Two events were packed in these activities, a workshop and an exhibition of installation art. By raising the theme "Free for Merdesa" which means freedom to live comfortably;all workshop participants then were given one month to create installation arts. Divided into six groups, each participant was given the freedom to choose the materials (bamboo, iron sheeting, plaited bamboo, unused banners, etc.) with a 1:1 scale for the creation of all their ideas. Together with Malang artists such as Bambang AWI, Pak Yon and Pak Hendong, all participants received guidance for reinforcement of concepts, art and technical. "Because almost all students of architecture have no carpentry skills, we give them the freedom to employ carpenters," said Ilman.

"Today, Kertanegara Park has less attention, people only see it in a glance and pass through," said Ilman. With the existence of installation art, according to him, Kertanegara Park can be transformed into a public space because one of the functions of this type of art is also to create space and give an identity. Referring to the theme of free for merdesa (worth living), through these six works of installation art, Ilman et. al. are attempting to express the expectations of Malang society to live comfortably. "The expression of six works of installation art has different shapes but still have the same expression, that is hope", he said.

It is not just an exhibition, on that occasion, the committee also held six competitions of installation art. "The competition aims to make them more excited when it worked. Since it is exhibited in public spaces, it must be optimal and not just for fun", he said. The presented juries to assess were Galih Widjil Pangarsa (lecturer of UB's Architectural Engineering), Nino Haris Wibisono (Head of IAI Malang Branch) and Gembyak Karjono (Arts Council of Malang). Appear as the first champion in this competition based on the juries decision is the installation of bamboo while for the people's choice, the winner is the installation of involvement. The winners are then eligible for prizes of cash and the cummulative point to join IAI. [Nok/aGw]
