The borders to Istria will open which is an extremely significant event for every visitor of Istria but also for each of us. Our welcome will be hearty and our hospitality sincere..

The warm Adriatic Sea and mild Mediterra-nean climate with 2300 hours of sunshine per year have attracted guests to our shores for more than a hundred years, and today, in the 21 Century, Istria welcomes more than 3 million visitors annually.

Istria is described as “Croatian Tuscany” which exceeds the stunning beauty of so many overcrowded and over-priced spots around the Mediter-ranean basin. Apart the beautiful nature, they are also praising the infrastructure, especially the roads, which they call small, yet well maintained, and claim that that while you are driving, not a kilometre goes by that one doesn’t see something interesting. “The cities of Umag and Rovinj are particularly beautiful and worth a good tour, Porec and Pula are the most popular resorts on the coast as well. The list of top travel destinations for couples, found on the portal Next Avenue, was made by Abbie Kozolchyk, a renowned author of travels guides, from New York. “From its small medieval towns located on foothills to the coast of the clear turquoise blue sea, it is easily accessible to travellers, yet free of crowds”, says Abbie. She recommends the towns of Grožnjan and Motovun, and the fresh fish, olive oil and truffles, all which in her opinion can hold their own in comparison to the same Italian products. When going on a second honeymoon, says Kozolchyk, people pay more attention to the destination; they have more time and can therefore start off on their dream trip.Istrien wurde unter acht roman-tischsten Orte der Welt als ein ideales Reiseziel für die zweite Hochzeitsreise benannt. Geografisch wurde Istrien zum Kontinent im Osten

durch die Bucht Preluka, im Norden durch das

Gebirgsmassiv Ćićarija, und im Westen durch die

Bucht Muggia abgegrenzt. Der ethnische Raum

der Histrier jedoch füllte nicht die ganze istrische

Halbinsel aus. Nach den heutigen Erkenntnissen

war ihr Lebensraum im Westen vom Fluss Rižana

begrenzt, nördlich und nordöstlich vom Massiv der

Ćićarija und Hängen der Učka, und schließlich im

Osten durch den Fluss Raša, der die ethnische

Grenze zu den Liburnern darstellte.

The advent of the Histri in this region is connected

with the large changes that occurred during the

12th century BC. In accordance with current

knowledge, in that period of time the Bronze Age

autochthonous inhabitants of Istria and the founders

of fortified hillfort settlements (castellieri), all of a

sudden disappeared. Life ceased on many hillforts,

only to continue on others, and it is presumed that

new settlements of the same type were likewise

created. The biggest and most characteristic change

that swept across the larger part of the Peninsula

concerned the mode of interment.

In lieu of interment by inhumation that was wide

spread during the Bronze Age, suddenly a ritual

appeared that was connected with incineration

- the cremation of the deceased, which became

exclusive throughout the entire millennium BC.

The settlements, hillforts of the Histri, which are

to date known to us are determined precisely

on account of their urn necropolises. These are

usually situated in the immediate vicinity of the

hillforts, or even within the area of the settlements

themselves, which were as a rule encompassed

by stone walls. The position of only 29 Iron Age

urn necropolises is known to us, of which only a

smaller number were excavated.

Das Erscheinen der Histrier auf diesen Gebieten

bringt man mit den großen Veränderungen in Ver-

bindung, die im Lauf des 12. Jahrhunderts v. Chr.

vor sich gingen. Gemäß den heutigen Erkenntnissen

verschwanden auf einmal die alteingesessenen

Stämme aus der Bronzezeit und Gründer der be-

Histri in Istria Die Histrier in Istrien Pula, 16.05. - 15.09.The Istrian Peninsula derives its name from the

Histri, its Iron Age inhabitants. The first necropolis

of the ancient Histri was excavated at Bera in 1883,

130 years ago. Many explorations were carried out

from that period to the present, which were mainly

focused on their necropolises, but there were also

some research activities concentrated on certain

modest details associated with the hillforts.

We can learn more about both the Histri as a people

and Istria from various preserved excerpts of texts

written by ancient writers already from the 6th

century BC. The earliest such piece of information

appears in a work written by Hecataeus of Miletus,

titled “Travels round the Earth”, who states that

the Histri are a people living in the Ionian Bay, as

was the Adriatic called at the time. Towards the

continent, Istria is geographically defined by Preluka

Bay in the east, the Ćićarija massif in the north, and

Muggia (Milje) Bay in the west. However, the ethnic

area associated with the Histri did not include the

entire Peninsula. From what is known at present,

their habitat was limited by the Rižana River on

the west, the Ćićarija massif and the slopes of the

Učka Mountain in the north and northeast, and the

Raša River in the east, which also represented the

ethnic border towards the Liburni.

Die Halbinsel Istrien hat ihren Namen von den

Histriern erhalten, den einstigen Einwohnern aus

der Eisenzeit. Noch vor 130 Jahren, im Jahr 1883,

wurde in Beram die erste Nekropole der alten

Histrier ausgegraben. Von da an bis auf den heu-

tigen Tag wurden zahlreiche Forschungen in ihren

Nekropolen unternommen, aber auch bescheidene

Details von den Burgfestungen wurden untersucht.

Über das Volk der Histrier in Istrien erfahren wir

auch aus verschiedenen, erhalten gebliebenen

Textfragmenten von antiken Autoren schon aus

dem 6. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Die früheste Information

stammt vom Hekataios von Milet, der in seinem

Werk „Beschreibung der Erde“ das Volk der Hist-

festigten Burgen (castellier). In zahlreichen Burgen

hörte das Leben plötzlich auf, setzte sich aber in

anderen Burgen fort; ferner setzt man voraus, dass

es zu Gründungen von Siedlungen des gleichen Typs

kam. Die größte und/oder die augenscheinlichste

Veränderung, die auf der ganzen Halbinsel vor

sich ging, ist die Art der Bestattung. Anstatt der in

der Bronzezeit üblichen Erdbestattung kam es auf

einmal zum Ritual der Kremierung der Toten, was

im Laufe eines ganzen Jahrtausends vor Christus

praktiziert wurde. Die Burgsiedlungen der Histrier,

die wir bis heute kennen, werden gerade durch die

Nekropolen mit Feuerbestattung gekennzeichnet.

Sie befanden sich gewöhnlich in unmittelbarer Nähe

der Burgen, sogar innerhalb der Siedlungen, die

von Steinwällen umgeben waren. Wir kennen die

Position von nur 29 Feuerbestattungsnekropolen aus

der Eisenzeit, von denen nur eine kleinere Anzahl

durch Ausgrabungen bekannt wurde.

The basic activity of the Histri was animal husbandry, followed by agriculture, hunting and fishing, but they also engaged in various crafts. A reconstructed furnace for firing pottery stems from Nesactium. Different implements or jewelry parts were made out of bone and horn. Weaving was also one of their activities, as can be seen from the offerings discovered in female graves, such as pottery whorls used for distaffs, spools for wounding thread, weights for looms, combs used to compact threads during weaving, and the like. They also worked metal. New objects were produced by casting metal into molds and smithing it. Precious bronze vessels were also often mended with sheet-metal and rivets. Hauptsächlich befassten sich die Histrier mit Viehzucht, Landwirtschaft, Jagd und Fischen, aber sie kannten auch verschiedene Handwerke. Aus Nesaktium stammt ein rekonstruierter Keramikbrennofen. Sie bearbeiteten Knochen und Hörner, stellten verschiedenes Werkzeug und Schmuck her. Ferner kannten sie die Weberei, was man aus den Grabbeigaben in Frauengräbern sehen kann, wie z.B. keramische Teile für Spindeln, Spulen, Gewichte für Webstühle, Kämme zum Straffen von Gewebe beim Weben usw. Ebenso konnten sie Metall verarbeiten. Sie gossen Gegenstände in Gießformen aus, bearbeiteten das Eisen und stellten neue Gegenstände her, aber ebenso reparierten sie das wertvolle Geschirr aus Bronze durch verschiedene Methoden der Flick- und Ausbesserungsarbeiten.The jewelry forms that were prevalent in Istria in that period of time appear on a very wide territory, stretch-ing from Poland on the north to the southern regions of the western coast of the Adriatic. infomustThe exhibition presents what is currently known about the Histri, knowledge that is being expanded with every new excavation, in tandem with various scientific branches, espe-cially natural science. Mit dieser Ausstellung haben wir alles gezeigt, was wir im Moment von den Histriern wissen, was aber mit jeder neuen Ausgrabung, und in Zusammenarbeit mit anderen wissen-schaftlichen Richtungen, besonders der Naturwissenschaften, ständig ergänzt wird.

torques, small bone beads, spiral spectacle-shaped pendants, bronze buttons used to decorate pieces of attire, the first glass paste beads, and the like.Die Schmuckformen, die man aus dieser Zeit in Istrien kennt, kommen auf einem sehr weiten Gebiet vor, von Polen im Norden, bis zu den südlichen Gegenden der Westküste Adrias. Typisch sind Bronze-armbänder mit C oder V Querschnitt, dreieckige Spiralarmbänder, horizontal gerippte Manschetten, vielfache Wendelringe (torques), kleine Perlen aus Gebein, spiralförmige brillenähnliche Anhänger, Bron-zeknöpfe, mit denen man die Kleidung schmückte, die ersten Perlen aus Glaspaste und vieles mehr. A realistic depiction of a maritime battle also speaks about the presence of the Histri on the Adriatic. This depiction represents a vessel with oarsmen and warriors alongside a series of other customary scenes (scenes of hunting, ploughing, a solemn procession) portrayed on a bronze situla from the grave vault explored in 1981 at Nesactium (Fig. 14). Such a depiction could have been made to order by one of the travelling craftsmen that toured the princely centers.Über die Gegenwart der Histrier am Meer spricht auch eine realistische Darstellung der Seeschlacht, mit einem Schiff mit Rudermannschaft und Kriegern, mit den anderen damals üblichen Szenen (Darstel-lungen der Jagd, Pflügen, festlicher Prozession) auf einer Bronzesitula (Gefäß), gefunden in einem Grab in Nesaktium, das 1981 erforscht wurde. So eine Darstellung konnte auch auf Bestellung angefertigt werden, und zwar von reisenden Meistern, die durch die damaligen Fürstentümer wanderten.

Poreč-Parenzo The surrounding area of

Poreč was inhabited already in prehistoric times,

which is testified by the many hill-forts (Picugi). The

town started developing in the 1st c. BC, when it

became a Roman colony. On the fertile land of

the surrounding countryside, where famed olive

oil and wine were produced, magnificent Roman

villas are built. The urban plan of Poreč is defined

by the pattern of Roman military

camps, in the layout of the streets,

crossing each other at right angles

and forming regular town blocks.

In spite of medieval and Baroque

reconstructions, such a grid plan is

even today visible in the direction

of streets. The ancient Forum was

situated on the westernmost point

of the peninsula, and next to it

was the Capitolium with temples.

The remains of the Temple of

Neptune and probably the Temple

of Mars testify to the construction

commissioned in the 2nd c. by

the vice-admiral of the Ravenna

fleet, Titus Abudius Verus.

Die Umgebung der Stadt war in der Urgeschichte

dicht besiedelt, wovon zahlreiche Gradinas (Picugis)

Zeugnis ablegen. Die Stadt entwickelte sich seit

dem 1. Jahrhundert von Christus, als sie römische

Kolonie wurde. Auf dem fruchtbaren Boden in der

Umgebung, wo das weit bekannte Olivenöl und

Wein hergestellt wurden, wurden luxuriöse römische

Villen errichtet. Der städtische Grundriss von Porec

wurde nach dem Modell römischer

Militärlager angelegt mit Straßen,

die sich im rechten Winkel kreuz-

ten und regelmäßige Stadtblöcke

bildeten. Trotz der Umbauten im

Mittelalter und in der Barockzeit ist

dieses Raster auch heute noch in

den Straßen erkennbar. Das antike

Forum befand sich am westlichen

Ende der Halbinsel und daneben

lag das Kapitol mit den Tempeln.

Die Reste des Neptuntempels und

wahrscheinlich auch des Marstem-

pels zeugen vom Eingriff , den

im 2. Jahrhundert Titus Abudius

Verus, Vizeadmiral der Flotte von

Ravenna, vornehmen ließ.

Vodnjan-Dignano In the past, Vodnjan was an important urban center and so today this town is an interesting destination especially for those who love art and culture. Walking around the old part of town you’ll surprised by the mul-titude of buildings from different periods: Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. To emphasize the family palace Bettiza, the popular Castle, built in 1300, now houses the museum.In der Vergangenheit wurden Vodnjan wichtigen städtischen Zentrum, und heute ist diese Stadt ein interessantes Reiseziel vor allem für Liebhaber von Kunst und Kultur. Pićan-Pedena Owing to its strategically important location, it was the site of a prehistoric hill-fort, and in Roman times Pićan was a military stronghold. From the 6th - 18th cc. it was the seat of the only diocese in the interior of Istria with 12 parishes, and due to such a connection with the Roman Church it always had a significant place and great power in Central Istria. At the time of Byzantine rule Pićan was the administrative center of Central Istria. In the 10th c. both Pazin and Pićan were under the Patriarchs of Aquileia, who in the 12th c. granted the Pićan fief to the founder of the County of Pazin, so as part of it, Pićan came under the rule of the Habsburgs in the 14th c. The belfry, 48 meters high, was constructed at the end of the 19th c. and is among the tallest ones in Istria. Next to it is a stone measure which was once used for

Daher ist es folgerichtig, dass Pićan zur Römerzeit ein wichtiger Militär-stützpunkt wurde. Vom 6. bis zum 18. Jahrhundert war es der Sitz der einzigen Diözese im Inneren Istriens mit 12 Pfarren, so dass Pićan auf diese Art mit der römischen Kirche verbunden war und eine immer größere Rolle und Macht im zentra-len Istrien innehatte. It is a fairly small church, a top-level archetype of 15th century Gothic popular architec-ture built of symmetrical stone blocks with a stone roof-slates. Master Albert from Constanca, on Lake Boden, painted not only the frescoes in Bale but also the frescoes in a number of other churches in Istria during the 15th century. He was infl uenced by the Venetian Floral Gothic (gotico fi orito), and by Central-European (German and Czech) styles,

but the early Renaissance charac-teristics could also be noticed in his work. Besides the usual scenes from the cycle of the life of Christ painted on the altar walls, he also painted a scene featuring the Throne of Mercy with the images of the Saints. The church is open all day.Die Kirche des Hl. Geistes von Bale befindet sich in der Nähe des Hauptplatzes, an dem auch die bekannte Zitadelle Soardo - Bembo steht. Frescoes of Istria Fresken in Istrien The great number of preserved frescoes to be seen on the relatively small territory of the Istrian peninsula is amazing. We can speak of close to 140 localities, varying from large and rich fresco cycles to individual scenes and tiny fragments. These frescoes can be tracked back to the turn of 9th century, but it is dur-ing the 11th century that they started to be produced in great number that continued to the middle of the 16th century. Istrian frescoes are vivid and authen-tic art works, nearly all of which can be seen in little churches scattered around small, picturesque Istrian towns or villages usually situated on secluded hilltops. At that time, a church wouldn’t be considered finished if a painter hadn’t made frescoes. Obwohl Istrien ein relativ kleines Gebiet ist, gibt es dort erstaunlich viele gut erhaltene Wandmalereien. In Istrien gibt es unge-fähr 140 Lokalitäten, an denen man Fresken vorfinden kann- von großen und prächtigen Freskenzyklusen zu vereinzelnden Szenen und kleinen Fragmenten von Fresken. Die ersten Fresken entstanden in Istrien an der Wende vom 8. zum 9. Jahrhundert. Besonders im 11. Jahrhundert beginnt eine wahre Blütezeit der Fres-kenmalerei, die bis in die Mitte des 16. They meant much more than that. Illiteracy, the common feature in the Early Medieval period was minimised by fres-coes that could easily be understood. The peasants admired the images of Christ, the Holy Virgin or God; prayed to the pictures of patron saint of the church, parish or settlement. At the same time the peasants were afraid to sin because, looking at the scenes of The Last Judgement they knew what awaited them. For this reason, the painters cleverly painted pictures on the western wall, where they could be observed while leaving the church. Istrian frescoes are, in fact, texts transformed into pictures that the parishioners could understand just by looking at them. Sv. Marija Karmelska Fažana Our Lady of Mount CarmelDas Kirchlein der Heiligen Jungfrau vom Berge KarmelThe chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a simple,

Gothic, single-naved edifice with a pointed barrel

vault and ending in a straight sanctuary wall. Its

construction is linked to the spreading of the cult

of Our Lady of Mount Carmel following the privi-

leges offered by Pope John XXII in the 14th c. The

church in Fažana testifies to the early spreading

of this cult in Istria. Two layers of mural paintings

remain. On the older one is a merely visible scene

in the center of which is a round mandorla with

rays of light radiating from it. It is uncertain what

was inside. On the sides are the kneeling images

of angels with arms crossed on their chest, gazing

into the center of the scene. What makes this fresco

so outstanding are the unread music notes above

the mentioned scene. It seems that the remaining

part of the church was not decorated with frescoes.

Die gotische Kapelle ist schlicht gehalten, einschif-

fig, mit einem Gewölbe aus Spitzbögen und hat

eine flache Chorwand. Ihre Entstehung kann mit

der Verbreitung der Verehrung der Heiligen Marija

vom Berge Karmel in Verbindung gebracht werden.

Nach dem erlassenen Privileg von Papst Johannes

XXII im 14. stellt die Kirche in Fažana, ein Zeugnis

für die frühe Ausbreitung ihrer Verehrung in Istri-

en, dar. Zwei Wandmalerei-Schichten sind teilweise

erhalten geblieben. Auf der älteren Schicht ist die

Szene, in deren Mitte sich eine runde Mandorla mit

Lichtstrahlen befindet, nur schwer erkennbar. Es ist

unklar, was sich in ihrem Inneren befand. Seitlich er-

kennt man kniende Engel mit verschränkten Armen

auf der Brust, die in die Mitte der Szene blicken.

Das besondere an diesem Bild ist der ungelesene

Notensatz oberhalb der beschriebenen Szene. Es

scheint als sei der Rest der Kirche nicht mit Fresken

verziert worden.

RochusCleriginus from Koper created the frescoes in the churches of St. Helen and St. Mary. Like a team, the name really conceals three related paint-ers from Koper. Cleriginus II painted the frescoes in St. Helen’s church around 1400, which were highly influenced by the Gothic painting from neighbouring Slovenia and the Alpine region. Cleriginus III, painted a few frescoes in St. Mary’s church in 1471 (the signature and date are pre-served). These frescoes, such as The Annunciation or Virgin Mary the Patron and the imag-es of various saints painted on the triumphal arch before the apse, have a Renaissance com-position style. Altogether, there were four painters: besides the monument of Cleriginus III, the socalled Colourful Master and two anonymous artisans also painted several frescoes in St. Mary’s. The frescoes in St. Roch were painted in the first half of the 16th century by Master Anthony of Padua.Autor der Fresken in den klei-nen Kirchen der Hl. Helen und der Hl. Svetvinčenat Set amidst large areas of oak forests, on a plateau

surrounded by Barban, Žminj, Dvigrad, Bale and

Vodnjan, the very beginnings of this town are con-

nected with Benedictine monks from Ravenna,

who in the 6th c. settled this area rich in wood.

Svetvinčenat is often mentioned in documents: in

the 10th c. as the property of the Poreč bishops,

in the 12th c. the Pope confirms the Church of St.

Vincent and in the beginning of the 14th c. it was

mentioned in the Survey of Istrian Land Boundaries

(Istarski razvod), a document drafted by a special

land commission that covered the territory to de-

fine the property lines. Crosses on large stones

marking the land division between counties are

still visible today. In its lengthy history the town

continuously changed rulers and conditions for

possession; centuries of Byzantine, Lombard and

Frankish rule were followed by the rule of Poreč

bishops, Patriarchs of Aquileia, Counts of Gorizia

and Sergi family from Pula, later named Castropola.

In the 15th c. the Morosini family completed the re-

construction of the Castle, and started to transform

Svetvinčenat into a Renaissance town with square

and cistern in the center, which apart from the cas-

tle, is surrounded by the Parish Church and loggia,

as well as other public structures. Finally, as dowry

it becomes the property of the Grimani family.

A stable for horses and mules was also part of the palace. And in one oh the towers there was probably a prison for disobedient citi-zens.

Festung von Vrsar Neben der Pfarrkirche befin-det sich ein monumentaler halbzerstörter Palast, der einst die Sommerresidenz der Bischöfe von Poreč war. An dieser strategischen Stelle besassen die Bischöfe im 12. und 13. Jh. einen bescheide-

nen romanischen Palast. Im Vrsar Castle In the immediate vicinity of the

parish church there is a palace that used to be the

summer residence of the Poreč Bishops. On this

strategic location they had at first built some mod-

est Romanesque palace (12th/13th century). In the

centuries to come the original palace was continu-

ously being reconstructed and enlarged. In fact, the

contemporary palace arose after reconstructions

of the original Romanesque castle in the period

between the 14th and 18th century.

It is not quite clear how the palace originated. In

the architecture of the building traces of different

styles can be found-from the Romanesque till the

Baroque. The palace was fortified; therefore in

documents it was named ‘castrum’ (fortification,

fortified castle). Defensive walls fragments have

been preserved till the present day. In the south

there are two slender observation towers from

the 13th century having a square ground-plan and

provided with loopholes. On the facade of the left

tower there is a sundial. The palace consisted of

numerous rooms - for the Bishops, servants and

guests. In the ground floor wine and oil presses

me - Aussichtsürme mit viereckigem Grundriss, an

denen Schiesslöcher vorhanden sind. Die Fassade

des linken Turmes ist eine Sonnenuhr. Im Palast

waren unzählige Räume (für den Bischof, Diener,

Gäste). Im Keller waren Weinkelter, Olivenpresse,

Backofen, Wasserzisterne, sowie Vorratsräume für

landwirtschaftliche Produkte (Öl. Wein, Getreide)

von den Bischofslandgütern der Umgebung von

Vrsar. Neben dem Palast gab es auch Stallungen.

It is the biggest festivity in this peaceful fishermen village situated between Umag and Novigrad. These festivals are traditional parties with music and an indispensable culinary offer of seafood specialties prepared by the fisherman from the daily catch and sold from off their boats. as a rule, these are organized every other Friday in the summer months and are the best way to learn something about Istrian folklore and customs. consigned it to their daughters

and thus preserved this aspect of

heritage. Thanks to archaeological

and ethnological researches a

large number of kinds of jewellery

had been saved from oblivion.

Replicas were made of the rićin

from Žminj (an earring found in

an old Croatian graveyard in the

city of Žminj, dating from the 10th

century) and the earring from

Buzet (a bronze earring dating

from the 7th and 8th century).

During the workshops the at-

tendants will make copies of this

jewellery as of the jewellery kept

in the Ethnographic museum of

Istria (coral necklaces, hairpins

from Vodnjan...) with wire and

similar material.

Die Menschen haben sich schon

schmückt. Den Schmuck haben

die Frauen voller Stolz gehütet

und an ihre Töchter weiterge-

geben und somit zur Erhaltung

des nationalen Kulturerbes bei-

vor der Vergessenheit bewahrt.

Es wurden Nachbildungen des

Žminer ‘Rićin’ (Ohrringe, die auf

dem Frühkroatischen Friedhof in

Žminj gefunden wurden und aus

dem 10. Jahrhundert stammen)

und Buzeter Ohrringe (Bronze-

Ohrringe aus Buzet aus dem 7.

und 8. Jahrhundert) gefertigt. Bei

den Workshops zur Schmuckher-

stellung stellen die Teilnehmer

diese Art von Schmuck aus Draht

oder ähnlichem Material her, sowie

Schmuck, wie er im Museum auf-

bewahrt wird (Korallen-Halsketten,

Haarnadeln aus Vodnjan usw.) her.

painting exhibition with ethnic

motifs, demonstration of traditional

handcrafts etc…and Istrian food

tasting will accompany that all.

The freestanding bell tower next to

the parish church of St. Pelagius

and St. Maximilian was built in

1883 and modelled after the bell

tower of St. Mark’s in Venice. On

the tower’s pyramidal spire, the

statue of the city’s patron saint,

St. Pelagius, was placed there

in 1913. The statue is made of

wood and covered with a bronze

metal sheet. During the summer

months, visitors can climb to the

top of the bell tower from which

there is a beautiful view of the

Novigrad’s Riviera.

Istria Gourmet Guide 2013The Istria Tourist Board has published a new guide for the Peninsula’s gourmet offer. Along with detailed information on the richness of eno-gastronomic offer integrated in this unique publication with translation in four languages, the cover of Istria Gourmet 2013 also brings the fresh view of the communication con-cept. Istria Gourmet couples several projects includ-ing the promotion of native cuisine and high quality Istrian delicacy, the selection of best gastronomic addresses in Istria, wine and olive tourism related projects all additionally enriched by the promotion of truffles as an exceptional Istrian gastronomic product. Verification of restaurant quality in Istria and their ranking according to awarded grades began in 1996. Of the 50 catering establishments, which were pub-lished in the first gastronomic guide, we have reached 211 of them, which speaks volumes about the dy-namic development of the Istrian gastronomy scene over the last seventeen years. Always adhering to the same evaluation criteria, this year we present to you 122 restaurants (with 80 or more points), 54 taverns, 10 distinguished a la carte restaurants within the major hotels and 25 objects (in section ‘and more..’), which do not fall in one of the previous categories but are worth visiting as each of them provides their own specialty (prosciutto ham tasting, cheese tast-ing, delicious desserts, etc.). The Istrian gastronomic mosaic is diverse and rich. The following pages will introduce luxury restaurants with their exclusive of-fer and traditional taverns, which still prepare the majority of their meals on the hearth. There are also agrotouristic households, offering traditional dishes from home stoves (prepared from food from their

own family farms) and there are several most sim-ple inns where you can feel the charm of traditional Istrian brunch with the tripe, soup from corn, frit-tata with asparagus and marinated anchovies. All these establishments are presented in alphabeti-cal order, with their basic information and recom-mendations for which dishes they are known. The very best restaurants and taverns from this year’s charts, we marked with the label TOP 2013. This prestigious award, this year will be carried by nine restaurants, one of which is within a hotel, and five taverns.

Istra Gourmet vereint in sich einige

Projekte, und zwar die Promotion

der autochthonen Küche und aus-

gesuchter istrischer Delikatessen,

die Auswahl der besten Restau-

rants in Istrien, Projekte im Rah-

men des Wein- und Olivenöltouris-

mus, und ein zusätzlicher Aspekt

ist die Promotion der Trüffel als

eines der herausragendsten istri-

schen gastronomischen Produk-

te. Das Projekt der Verifizierung

der Qualität von Restaurants und

Gastgewerbe auf dem Gebiet der

Verwaltungseinheit Istrien und ihre

jekten, die im ersten gastrono-

mischen Führer 1996 aufgelistet

wurden, haben wir heute die stolze

Zahl von 211 Objekten erreicht, was

die dynamische Entwicklung der is-

trischen gastronomischen Szene in

den vergangenen siebzehn Jahren

deutlich macht. Wir haben die ho-

hen Maßstäbe der Bewertung auf-

recht erhalten, und dürften Ihnen

heuer 122 Restaurants vorstellen

(mit 80 und mehr Punkten), ferner

54 Tavernen, 10 wertvolle a la carte

for men. Yet, Umag is not only

about tennis. Year after year,

main tennis events are accom-

panied by rich and attractive

programmes intended for various

types of guests hungry for fun.

These programmes include some

daily sport activities and meet-

ings with well-known sportsmen,

exclusive parties, concerts and all

night entertainment.

Besides excellent tennis and

music, the ATP Croatia Open’s

programme which takes place

in Umag once again this year

includes the accompanying oe-

nology and gastronomy festival.

Within a series of dynamic events

under the common name Istria

Gourmet Festival, the organiz-

ers will, during the tournament,

present the aces of north-west-

ern Istria with regard to the ex-

cellent food and wine.

Istria Gourmet Festival is held

within three thematic units. Un-

der the name Naša kužina (Our

cuisine), three of the best north-

western Istrian restaurants, in

collaboration with wine and ol-

ive producers from this area, will

each day prepare Istrian special-

ties for visitors of the ATP. The Is-

tria Gourmet Restaurant will offer

dinners and tastings for journal-

ists and guests, whilst the Vinistra

Istrian Wine Producers Associa-

tion will organize thematic meet-

ings with regard to wine culture.

Over the centuries it melded with the Istrian hillocks, adopting the specificities of their climate and soil, becoming a separate vari-ety, Momjan Muscat. This spe-cific variety has given us a real wine treat, guaranteeing true pleasure for the palate of every wine-lover since antiquity. It is also appreciated outside of Is-tria - it is known to have won a golden medal at the wine fair in Brussels in 1935 and was read-ily enjoyed at the royal courts of Franz Joseph in Vienna and King Emmanuel III in Rome. sowie von König Emmanuel III in

Rovinj Souvenir: Recipe book of the Batana House Recipes of the Batana House have been passed down through the genera-tions and prepared both at home and in the special atmosphere of Rovinj’s tavern - spacio, but also during family and group excursions. These special-ties are mostly made of simple ingredients and they are quite “easy” to prepare. Recipes have kept their traditional ingredients and they capture the true essence and flavours of fish, crabs and seafood, main gastronomic specialties of Rovinj. The living circumstances in Rovinj have greatly affected the origin of dishes from the selection of the author of the Recipe book. These circumstances are related primarily to the maritime market, rich in fish, and modest social standard of fishermen, sailors and farmers which did not allow culinary licentiousness of the local cuisine, but set unsurpassed standards of natural food flavours. Local cuisine recipes use little spices and seasonings but carefully selected to bring out the underlying flavor of fish. These are salt, pepper, vinegar, onion and garlic, bay leaf, parsley, polenta, kale, chicory and various salads. The gastronomic specialties of Batana Hause are accompanied by wine and olive oil, two major ag-ricultural produce of Istria and Rovinj, and this is considered to be an authentic culinary ritual.

Batana procession and dinner at spacio Rovinj, Tuesdays and ThursdaysIn the evening join the batana procession with

lanterns. It starts from a small pier near the main

square and continues along the beautiful old town

to the local tavern Spacio Matika in Švalbina Street

with sea entrance. Batana procession is accompa-

nied by evocative music of Rovinj folk group Batana

or Bitinaduri of the cultural Society ‘Marco Garbin’.

A traditional dinner with fish specialties will be

served at Spacio Matika.

Rovinj Souvenirs: Rezeptbuch Haus der Batana Das Rezeptbuch Haus der Batana enthält Rezepte, die in der täglichen Verwendung von Generation zu Generation weitergegeben werden. Die Ge-richte gab es sowohl auf dem heimischen Tisch als auch in der besonderen Atmosphäre der Ro-vinjer Konobas (Weinschenken) - den Spacio, sowie bei Famili-en- und Gruppenausflügen in der Natur. Alle werden aus einfachen Zutaten zubereitet und auch die Zubereitungsart ist „leicht“. Die Rezepte haben ihr „Geschichtli-ches“ beibehalten, weil in ihnen der echte, natürliche Geschmack der Fische, Krebse und Meeres-früchte erhalten wird, die die Hauptspeisen des Rovinjer gas-tronomischen Angebots ausma-chen. Zum Werdegang der vom Autor des Rezeptbuches ausge-wählten Gerichte haben die täg-lichen Lebensbedingungen in Ro-vinj viel beigetragen. Sie sind vor allem geprägt von der Seefahrt, dem üppigen Fischmarkt und dem bescheidenen gesellschaft-lichen Standard der Fischer, See-fahrer und Landarbeiter, die keine kulinarischen Ungezügeltheit der heimischen Küche zuließen, aber deshalb unübertroffene Stan-dards der Speisen natürlichen Geschmacks aufstellten. Die

heimische Küche verwendet we-nig Gewürze und Beilagen, aber diese sind sorgsam ausgewählt, um den Grundgeschmack des Fisches noch mehr hervorzuhe-ben. Das sind Salz, Pfeffer, Essig, Zwiebel und Knoblauch, Lorbeer-blatt, Petersilie, Polenta, Wirsing, Chicoree, und verschiedene Sa-late. Das Essen und Genießen mit Wein und Olivenöl, den beiden Hauptprodukten Istriens und der Rovinjer Landwirtschaft werden in der Gastronomie Haus der Batana als authentisches Gourmet-Ritual betrachtet.

Batana-Umzug mit Abendessen im Spacio Rovinj, dienstags und donnerstagsIn der Abenddämmerung kön-nen Sie am Batana-Umzug mit Laternen teilnehmen. Er beginnt an der kleinen Mole in der Nähe des städtischen Hauptplatzes und fährt am wunderschönen Altstadtkern vorbei bis zum Spa-cio Matika in der Švalbina ulica, das auch einen Eingang von der Meerseite her hat. Die Fahrt der Batanas (lokaltypische Boote) wird begleitet von der suggesti-ven Musik der Rovinjer Folk-Grup-pe Batana oder Bitinadora des Kultur- und Kunstvereins Marco Garbin. We are not travelling very far from the heart of Istria, to the year 1867 and the time of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. It was June 26th 1867 when prisoners in the tower of the fort of Pazin, co conspirators Mathias Sandorf, Stjepan Bathory and Ladislav Zathmar awaited their execution after the Austrian court had sentenced them to death. Although they had already accepted their fate, under the acoustic domes of the impressive Pazin Castle, Sandorf heard the sound of people talking. From the muffled language the prisoners realised they had been betrayed! The desire for escape was born, with revenge! They broke down the grate that divided them from the outside world, jumped onto the lightening rod and began their descent along the stone walls... This is how Jules Verne described the events at the Pazin Castle and the Pazin Abyss in his novel Mathias Sandorf, published in 1885. The events in Pazin were a breaking point for the fortune of this hero, and set him on his path of revenge and search for his traitors, introducing the motives that would lead the events and experience of the main characters through the novel’s hundreds of pages, all the way to the fulfilment of destiny on the Island of Antekirtta. In memory of this great French author, who had never even visited Pazin but was inspired by its castle and abyss for his great work in Mathias Sandorf, this evening you have the chance to enter the world of Jules Verne!

Aus dem Herzen von Istrien brau-chen wir nicht weit zu reisen nur ins Jahre 1867 und der Zeit der österreichischungarischen Monar-chie. Es war der 26. Juni 1867, der Tag an dem im Turm der Festung von Pazin Mathias Sandorf und 2 weitere Verschwörer, Stephan Bathory und Ladislaus Zathmar eingesperrt waren, nachdem sie das österreichische Kriegsgericht zum Tode verurteilte und auf den Moment der Vollstreckung des Urteils warteten. Obwohl sie sich bereits mit ihrem Schicksal abgefunden haben, drangen auf einmal, in der prächtigen Akustik der Festung, Geräusche eines Gesprächs bis zu Sandorf durch.Den gedämpft, ausgesprochenen Worten entnahmen die Gefange-nen, dass sie verraten wurden! Dies entfacht den Wunsch nach Flucht und Rache! Die Gefangenen

durchbrachen die Gitterstäbe, die sie von der Außenwelt trennten. Entlang des Blitzableiters, der sich neben den Fenstern befand, bannten sie sich so ihren Weg in die Tiefe hinab entlang der Steinmauern. Auf diese weise beschrieb Jules Verne die Ereignisse in der Festung und der Schlucht von Pazin in seinem Roman Mathias Sandorf, der im Jahr 1885 veröffentlicht wurde. to the bishop

of the same

name who in

524 served in

the town of

Novigrad. It

was built in the mid 6th century

on the hill under the Kranjci

village. In the 13th century the

locals dedicated the church to St.

Florentius, the patron protecting

against hail, thunder and field

infertility. The church is on the

Croatian List of protected cul-

tural goods with the valuable 6th

century altar and braiding-style

decorated altar plates. Die romani-

steht auf der Liste der geschützten Kulturgüter der Republik Kroatien.According to the local legend, the church was built by the Greeks during the Byzantine period. They were extremely wealthy, but the rich period was followed by a seven years drought. Due to the

hunger they had to move so they loaded a plenty of gold on a small horse-drawn chariots. Since gold was too heavy, they buried a part of it in a still boiler somewhere around the church with the secret vow. They have never returned looking for gold, and a vow remains a secret to this day. Der Legende nach wurde diese Kirche zu byzantinischer Zeit von steinreichen Griechen gebaut. Als dann aber die siebenjährige Dürre kam, wurde die Hungernot so groß, dass die Griechen die Gegend verlassen mussten. Sie luden das viele Gold auf eine kleine Kutsche, aber für die Pferde war

sie einfach zu schwer. So waren sie gezwungen, einen Teil ihres Goldes in einen Branntweinkessel zu verstauen, den sie dann bei der St.-Florus-Kirche vergruben. Dabei legten sie ein heimliches Gelübde ab.
