Nugo Romano S.p.A. provides its expertise in the field of NDT and dimensional checks with
highly specialized and qualified personnel, operating both in the company and at customers and
suppliers premises. In particular, the company is able to perform the following checks:
LIQUID PENETRANT TESTS (PT)
The liquid penetrant test is aimed at verifying discontinuities such as cracks, overlaps, folds, and
missed fusion that appear on the surface to be tested. The check is carried out mainly on metallic
materials, but can also be performed on other materials, provided that they are inert to the products
used for the investigation and are not excessively porous.
The penetration of the liquid inside a discontinuity occurs by capillarity and not by gravity. This prerogative, which is the basis of all the control methodology, makes easy to inspect surfaces that are
difficult to access regardless of its position.
The company employs qualified and certified staff for Non-Destructive Test according to the UNI EN
ISO 9712: 2012 standard: 2 PT operators of Level III and 2 PT operators of Level II
MAGNETOSCOPIC TEST (MT)
Magnetoscopic test is a non-destructive testing method, which uses the iron-magnetic properties
of some materials to become magnetized and thus transmit the magnetic flux. Magnetoscopy is able to detect the possible presence of surface and sub-surface discontinuities on
the pieces examined, by thickening of the magnetic powder in correspondence with the dispersed
flow. The immediacy of the magnetoscopic control result, linked to a simple interpretation of the
indications, make it a non-destructive testing method complementary to the penetrating liquids with
the advantage of an increased depth of examination. The control method with magnetic particles is
widely used not only in the production phase but also in the periodic maintenance and verification
phase.
In the company there is staff qualified and certified for Non-Destructive Tests according to the standard
UNI EN ISO 9712: 2012: 2 operators for MT Level III and 2 operators for MT Level II
ULTRASOUND TEST (UT)
The ultrasounds are constituted by elastic waves, which propagate in the materials even along
considerable paths. The method uses high frequency sound waves (ultrasound/UT) which pass through the material to be examined. These non-destructive checks exploit the capacity of particular
mechanical vibrations with frequencies higher than that audible from the human ear, the variations in
acoustic impedance caused by discontinuities within the product, generate response signals that, when
properly interpreted, can lead to the identification of the defect present inside the product.
This ultrasonic method of non-destructive tests is generally applied to forged, welded products and
thickness tests.
In the company there is staff qualified and certified for Non-Destructive Tests according to standard UNI EN ISO 9712: 2012: 2 operators for UT Level III and 2 operators for UT Level II.
VISUAL TEST (VT) Visual check is the control method used by everybody, in all inspection methods. The visual inspection
can be done simply by "naked eye" therefore without the aid of optical instruments or with the assistance
of lenses, mirrors, endoscopes, borescopes, fiberscopes and video endoscopes. Particularly important
is also the level of illumination of the surface that must be compliant with the specifications and
implemented in such a way as not to preclude visual examination.
The VT inspector covers various tasks: classification and sizing of defects for check of compliance with product standards on welds, forgings, castings and plates, check of compliance with welding
procedures, dimensional check of welds, dimensional check of products in general, painting check,
macrographs, etc.
In metallurgy, for the identification of discontinuities, visual check is used in all production contexts.
The defectology treated by the method regards all the production and post-production phases,
therefore it concerns both the quality of the production and the control in operation of the products.
In the company there is staff qualified and certified for Non-Destructive Test according to standard UNI
EN ISO 9712: 2012: 2 operators for VT Level III and 2 operators for VT Level II.
DIMENSIONAL CHECKS
Dimensional check is carried out both with traditional instruments, through internal, external and depth micrometers, digital gauges, digital gauges for depth and the use of parallel Johnson-type flat blocks.
For parts of large dimensions or with particularly complicated geometries, the company owns 3D laser
equipment:
• FARO Arm Edge measuring arm
• ION FARO Laser Tracker
For roughness check, the company uses portable roughness testers Surf Test SJ-210 Mitutoyo.
All the instrumentation is subjected to periodic calibration in-house or in accredited laboratories.
The personnel working on these instruments is highly qualified and specialized.
