A DVD - Digital Versatile Disk - is a digital information storage medium. DVDs are labelled with one of the oppositesymbols. There are different types of DVD with varying storage capacities, depending on how the information is recorded.DVD setupVideo DVDs are divided into titles and chapters. A DVD may contain several titles, which in turn may consist of severalchapters. Titles and chapters have consecutive numbering.Normally the first title of a DVD contains notes on licence and information on the producer. The next title is usually thefilm itself. Further titles may contain e.g. "Making of" documentaries, trailers or information about actors.Languages and subtitlesDVDs can be used to store up to eight languages and subtitles in up to 32 languages. Language and subtitle can beplayed in any combination the user desires.Angle of visionSome DVDs even permit changing the angle, given that the movie has been shot from different camera angles.

Regional codesOn account of world-wide marketing strategies, a DVD code has been developed, which restricts playback to devicespurchased in specific regions. This code is based on a system dividing the world in six regions. Europe belongs to Zone 2.

Your DVD player can only play DVDs, which have the regional code 2. The regional code is printed onto the DVDcasing (see logo).Except for DVDs with the regional code 2 only DVDs with the regional code 0 (suited for all DVD players) can beplayed on your unit.If you have any difficulties in playing a specific DVD, make sure that the DVD is assigned to regional code 2 or 0.

Your unit is capable of fully exhausting the potentials of the surround sound. This naturally requires the use of thefive full frequency speakers, especially of the centre speaker and the subwoofers. The surround sound creates a "live" atmosphere such as in cinemas, concert halls, etc.

Your unit is able to read three surround sound formats

• Dolby Pro Logic• Dolby Digital• dts

Dolby Pro Logic (Dolby Surround)

Dolby Pro Logic (previously: Dolby Surround) is an early analog surround sound format, which encodes the multichannelsound for its transmission via two stereo channels. During playback the sound is decoded into four channels and canbe transmitted via five speakers, whereby no separate bass channel is supported. Contrary to the earlier DolbySurround format Pro Logic provides a natural sound; the sound distribution to the speakers is more precise.Dolby Pro Logic is increasingly replaced by the sound format Dolby Digital 5.1. Sound recording media in the ProLogic format are usually labelled with the opposite trade mark and the imprint "Dolby Pro Logic".

Dolby Digital 5.1

In the Dolby Digital sound format the audio material is stored digitally. Here up to five separate full frequency audiochannels (front left and right, centre, rear left and right) as well as an effect or bass channel (5.1) are stored. Soundrecording media in the Dolby Digital format are labelled with the opposite trade mark.Since each channel is completely independent, a realistic sound field is produced with a "three dimensional hearingimpression" with distance, motion and relative position in space.Your unit can read and decode these audio data, it amplifies and transmits them via the speakers. On the other hand, digital outputs can direct the original signal to an external decoder/ amplifier.

dts (Digital Theater Systems)

Hiding behind the abbreviation dts is a so far less distributed sound format, which is also able to store up to six (5.1)separate channels on one sound recording medium. Sound recording media in the Dolby Digital format are labelledwith the opposite trade mark.Your unit can read these audio data and transmit them to the digital outputs for decoding ("DIGITAL OUT"). However,it is not able to play the sound of a dts sound recording medium.

Connections and possible connectionsYour DVD home theatre provides three functions:

• DVD (video),• Receiver (radio),• AUX (operation of other audio units via the AUX jacks).

There are various options, in which the unit can be connected to other input and output units:

• to the TV set (video function)• to a VCR (video function)• to an other receiver, such as a hi-fi system (receiver function)• to other audio units, such as a mini disk player, a cassette deck, etc. (AUX function)

Prior to making the connections, make sure that all devices are switched off. Always plug the devices in the poweroutlet after the connection is completed.

Scart

Possible connections between the unit and the TV set

You can connect your unit to the TV set in three different ways.

Connection to the TV set via SCART cable

The SCART cable is the simplest connection between the DVD player and the TV set.Provided that your TV set is able to process RGB signals the best picture quality is achieved with this option.

TV set

Page 7: MD 7443 DVD BDA GBdownload2.medion.com/downloads/anleitungen/bda7443uk.pdf · 2019-08-02 · MD 7443 DVD BDA_GB 25.08.2003 16:29 Uhr Seite 3 C M Y CM MY CY CMY K A DVD - Digital Versatile

GB 8

Connection to the TV set via S-VHS cable

If your TV set does not have a SCART plug, you can connect it to the unit via a S-VHS cable (S-VIDEO jack). Thisprovides you with a good image quality. The sound transmission does not require a connection to the TV set , since the sound is transmitted to the speakers. If you would like to transmit the sound to the TV set anyway, use an additional audio cinch cable.

Connection to the TV set via video cinch cable

If your TV set does have neither a SCART connection nor a S-VIDEO jack, you can connect the unit also via a videocinch cable.

Placing the speakers

It is best to place the speakers of your unit in a circle around the listening position, as illustrated here:

The centre speaker, which usually plays the language and the two front speakers are best placed in anelevated position on the same level.

The distance of the speakers from the listening position is only important for the volume not for the qualityof the whole sound.

Setting up the unit

Place the unit on a flat and stable surface.

Always make sure that

• the air slots are not covered so that adequate ventilation is ensured• no direct heat sources affect the unit• the unit is not exposed to direct sunlight• contact with moisture or water is avoided• the unit is not positioned in the immediate vicinity of magnetic fields (e.g. TV sets or

other speakers).

Some aggressive furniture varnishes can damage the rubber pads of the unit. Place the unit, if necessary,on a protective cover.

Connecting the antennas

Your unit provides separate antenna connections for FM (VHF) and AM (medium wave) stations.

Connecting the FM antenna

The delivery of the unit includes a connected unipolar antenna for the reception of VHF stations. Extendthe unipolar antenna fully and position it for the best possible reception.Your VHF reception is better with an outdoor antenna (not included in the scope of delivery). In orderto connect an outdoor antenna to the device, pull the unipolar antenna off the rear. Connect the antenna'sconnecting cable with the antenna input of the device and the radio antenna jack in the wall.

Connecting the AM loop antenna

The AM loop antenna included in the scope of delivery provides a good reception of medium wavestations in most regions.Use the AM antenna connections to connect the wires of the loop antenna to the rear of the device. Theassignment of the wires to the two jacks is of no importance to the indoor antenna.Position the antenna in the direction providing the best reception, but as far as possible away from theunit, the speaker cables and the mains cable. This avoids interferences. In order to position the antenna, push the provided antenna base in the holder.

AC Power supply

Once all connections are performed, connect the mains cable with an outlet (230V ~ 50Hz).

Optional: Connecting the headphones

The connector for the headphones (PHONES) is located on the front of the unit. Connect headphoneswith a 6.3-mm jack plug.

ATTENTION!Turn down the volume control to minimum before putting on the headphones!
