Goudeau was born in Newport, Arkansas, but grew up in St. Louis, Mis- souri. The righty play collegiately at Maple Woods Community College in Missouri and could have continued his college career after his two years there, but bypassed an offer from Louisiana-Lafayette to go pro. The Royals made Goudeau a 27th-round pick in the 2012 Draft, and he made his pro debut later that year with the Rookie-Level Surprise Roy- als. The 22-year-old began this season with Low-A Lexington, but got the call to Advanced-A on May 19. All three of his starts this season have come with Wilmington. He opened the back-end of a doubleheader against Carolina on May 31, and took a tough-luck loss. Goudeau kept Carolina off the board over four sterling frames, which was the longest he had pitched in a game to that point in the season. But he walked the lead-off batter in the fifth, and was immediately removed from the game. That runner eventually scored as Wilmington lost 7-0. His second start came on the final day of the first half. Goudeau worked a seasom-high five innings, yielding just an unearned run against Frederick en route to a win. He won again against Salem on July 22. Goudeau battled his way through five frames, allowing a pair of homers and five runs total, but leaving with a 6-5 lead. Rob Whalen will take the ball tonight for the Carolina Mudcats. Born in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, Whalen was originally drafted by the New York Mets in the 12th round of the 2012 draft out of Haines City High School in Florida. Entering 2015, Whalen was the 20th-best prospect in the Mets organization according to Baseball America. The righty spent three-and-a-half seasons in the Mets system before being sent to the Braves earlier this month in a package that shipped Kelly Johnson and Juan Uribe to New York. Whalen signed for $100,000 back in 2012, and features a low-90s sinking fastball, along with a high-70s curveball. His changeup and slider are still works in progess, but he hides the ball well, making them play up. Prior to the trade, Whalen pitched in 15 games (14 starts) for Adv.-A Port St. Lucie this year, going 4-5 with a 3.36 ERA. In his first start as a Mudcat back on July 26, he tossed 5.2 innings against Myrtle Beach, yielding three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out one and getting saddled with the loss. Eddy Alvarez was the offensive star for the Dash, collecting four RBIs and a homer in support of starter Brandon Brennan who went six innings for his third win of the season. The Rocks are now six games under .500 (14-20) in the season’s second-half, the worst record they’ve had in a half this season. Wilmington’s five-game losing streak equals its longest of the season and the team has dropped six consecutive series. LIVING BY THE LONG BALL: Despite the sweep, it was a nice series of firsts for three Blue Rocks. Alfredo Escalera, Humberto Arteaga, and Elier Hernandez each hit their first home runs since coming up from Low-A Lexington. Hernandez, the 22nd-ranked prospect in the Royals’ system according to Baseball America, hit five homers with the Legends, his last coming on June 28 against Savannah. Arteaga is the least powerful of the three, having only hit nine dingers in his professional career. He was signed by the Royals on July 2, 2010. Escalera was the first of the three to get the call to Advanced-A from Lexington, where he hit eight long balls this season. He has just three extra-base hits in his first 27 games with Wilmington after collecting 24 in 64 games at Low-A. DYING BY THE HOMER: While Matthew Strahm has shown signs of brilliance, he does exhibit one major weakness: the long ball. The home run he allowed to Eddy Alvarez in the third inning was the fifth homer yielded by Strahm at Advanced-A this season. That is in just nine appear - ances. The trend is certainly an odd one for Strahm, who never surrendered more than a single dinger at any level in professional baseball before getting to the Riverfront. GARCIA GOING GOOD: A 1-for-3 performance in the final game the team’s three-game series with the Dash helped Carlos Garcia extend his hitting streak to 10 games, eclipsing his season-high in that category. Garcia had an eight-game hitting streak earlier in the season that lasted from June 21 to July 5. The Venezuelan native also produced his first home run at the Advanced-A level during the stretch on July 27 against Lynchburg. During his hitting streak, Garcia is 14-for-39 (.359) with a homer, a double, three RBIs, and nine runs scored. TRADE CHIPS: On Sunday, three former Wilmington Blue Rocks found new homes in Cincinnati when the Kansas City Royals dealt John Lamb, Brandon Finnegan, and Cody Reed to the Reds for N.L. All-Star Johnny Cueto. Lamb, former top-10 prospect, was the first to spend time on the Riverfront. He initially donned a Blue Rocks jersey in 2010 when he made 13 starts, going 6-3 with a 1.45 ERA. Lamb found himself in Delaware again in 2013 while rehabbing an injury. The lefty struggled his second time around going 4-12 with a 5.63 ERA. Finnegan had the shortest stint on the Riverfront. He started his professional career in Wilmington after being selected in the first round of the 2014 draft out of Texas Christian University. Finnegan allowed just five hits in 15 innings pitched before moving up the ladder and, eventually, pitching for the Royals on their World Series run. Reed started his 2015 campaign with the Blue Crew and had a memorable first-half, posting a League-leading 2.14 ERA and making the CL All-Star team before moving on to Double-A. On Tuesday, the Royals made another bold move as they traded two more former Rocks, Sean Manaea and Aaron Brooks, to Oakland for infielder Ben Zobrist. Manaea is the centerpiece as he was the number three prospect in KC’s system according to Baseball America. Manaea spent all of 2014 and a part of this season on the Riverfront, going 7-8 with a 3.11 ERA with Wilmington in his debut season, then going 1-0 with a 3.66 ERA in a brief rehab assignment with the Rocks in July. Brooks was with Wilmington in 2013 when he went 2-3 with a 4.47 ERA before getting called to Double-A in late-May. Brooks, unlike Manaea, does have some MLB experience pitching in four games for the Royals. THEY SAID IT PITCHER MATTHEW STRAHM: “I struggled keeping the ball down the whole game. (Eddy Alvarez) came up and got a first pitch fastball right at the belt, and a lot of times you don’t get those back. I’ve ran into it quite a few times since I’ve been up here and I’ve just got to work on keeping the ball down. It’s got to be my focus right now .... (There are) a lot of guys coming up and down. We lost quite a few guys to Double-A. You’ve got to adjust to it. The guys coming up, they’ll fill in. They’re just getting their feet wet right now. We can turn the corner any second...It’s brutal (playing after a bus ride). ( Brian Buchanan) does the best he can for us to get us in there and give us as much time as he can when we get home until we have to get to the field. It’s tough. It’s not fun, but it’s part of the grind.” THEY SAID IT OUTFIELDER CARLOS GARCIA: ”I’ve been working a lot with (Abraham Nunez) about trying to fix some things with my swing and try to be shorter to the ball and try to put the ball in play. Just do my job and get on base for Mauricio (Ramos), (Ryan) O’Hearn and those type of players (so they) can do their job...We have been talking about (taking more pitches) all season long. I know Abraham Nunez from a couple of years ago. That’s what I have to do, see some pitches and let the other players know what pitches we’re facing that night and if he has movement or velocity. I try to help my teammates know about (the pitcher)...I have to do the same job anywhere I go. I have to master that, try to be consistent with that. I have to try to make the pitcher throw a lot of pitches. That’s the type of hitter I have to be...I think my first mistake (in the first inning) was when I went to steal third I ran with my head down so I didn’t know where the ball was. Once I got to third base…I saw Mauricio had struck out or something and I heard Lopez saying, ‘Go four!’ and I didn’t see the ball, I just listened to him and left third base kind of late…I didn’t see the ball, I just tried to get home.”

MUDCAT TALES:

A native of Venezuela, Jose Briceno was originally a signee of the Colorado Rockies as a 16-year-old back in 2009. He enjoyed a productive 2014 season with Low-A Asheville, but was eventually shipped to the Braves as a part of the January trade that sent David Hale to the Rockies. Briceno saw some improvements at the plate in 2014, as he began hitting the ball to all fields more and worked out some flaws in his setup at the dish. There is a bit of an uppercut to his swing, allowing him to tap into his raw power. On the defen-sive side of the ball, Briceno is still developing as a receiver. He features an above-average arm, and even threw out 44 percent of would-be basestealers a season ago. Despite these assets, he has work to do, but Briceno’s tools give him the chance to develop into a big league regular in time.

Another player realtively new to the Braves organization is Dustin Peterson. The San Diego Padres took the Phoenix, Arizona native just 38 picks after the Seattle Mariners chose his older brother D.J. in the first round of the 2013 Draft. He spent his first full professional season at Low-A Fort Wayne, and was included in the package the Braves acquired in December in exchange for Justin Upton. 2014 was a bit of a struggle for Peterson, but scouts still trust his hitting ability. They believe he knows how to work counts and take advan-tage of pitches he can drive. Featuring above-average raw power, Peterson is a player who comes with his fair amount of swings-and-misses. He was originally a shortstop in high school and took a brief detour as a third baseman as a profes-sional. The Braves moved him to the outfield after his acquisi-tion and he’s made a solid transition. Scouts believe that no matter where he ends up defensively, it’ll be up to his bat to carry him through the minors.

If the Mudcats make the postseason this year, they can rest easy knowing at least one of their regulars has big-time post-season experience. Jacob Schrader played college ball at the University of Tampa, where he helped his team win the Division II National Championship in 2013. Schrader, a native of San Antonio, Florida, was named the NCAA DII Championship Series All-Tournament Team MVP during his squad’s title run. He hit an even .300 during his magical 2013 campaign, to go along with 10 home runs and 51 RBIs. A 27th round pick by the Braves in 2013, Schrader has been consistently progressing through the minor league ranks, playing at the Rookie Level during his first year of pro-ball, the Low-A level a season ago, and has now found a home at the Adv.-A level in 2015.

Carlos Salazar was originally committed to pitch colle-giately at Fresno State, but a $625,000 signing bonus from the Braves lured the hard-throwing righty to the professional ranks right out of high school in the 2013 draft. The California native is in his third professional season after limited time in 2013 and a season to forget in 2014. at the Low-A level a season ago, Salazar pitched to a 1-6 record and a 10.60 ERA in 10 starts before getting demoted to Rookie-Level Danville. It was there that he was moved to the bullpen, and Salazar thrived in the role, notching a 2-1 record and an ERA of 2.51. He spent most of 2015 back with Low-A Rome, but got the call to the Carolina League in mid-July. Salazar features a fastball that sits at 92-94 mph and can touch 97. His changeup and curveball have potential to be plus-pitches, but they still need refining.

TONIGHT’S BLUE ROCKS STARTING PITCHER

ASHTON GOUDEAU makes only the ninth start of his pro career tonight.Goudeau was born in New-port, Arkansas, but grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. The righty play collegiately at Maple Woods Com-munity College in Missouri and could have continued his college career after his two years there, but bypassed an offer from Louisiana-Lafayette to go pro. The Royals made Goudeau a 27th-round pick in the 2012 Draft, and he made his pro debut later that year with the Rookie-Level Surprise Royals. That runner even-tually scored as Wilmington lost 7-0.

GOUDEAU OF LATE: The tall, slender right-hander earned only the third save of his professional career on July 17 against Frederick. Goudeau allowed a hit, but struck out one as he worked the ninth inning of Wilmington’s 3-1 triumph. He worked in support that night of Jakob Junis. He was back in the bullpen for a relief outing on July 27 when he struck out a season-high tying four batters in only two frames. Despite getting a bunch of swings and misses Goudeau allowed two runs on four hits.

ROUGH MONTH: Goudeau has struggled in July, allowing 12 earned runs in 18 frames. He had yielded just three earned runs total in his first two months with Wilmington. Homers have been Goudeau’s biggest issue. He has yielded four long balls this month, after tossing just one gopher ball in the first two months of his Advanced-A career.

LEARNING FROM THE BEST: “My idols were always Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright. I’ve always liked those guys growing up in St. Louis. And the last couple offseasons I actually have had the chance to hang out with (Carpenter and Wainwright). There’s an off-season program that we do. There’s just a couple professional baseball players around the St. Louis area (working there), and they happened to be a couple of them. We met up, and we just made a friendship. I get to work out with them. They’re really good, they guide me. I’m good friends with a couple of the pitchers, and they help guide me.”

NOT HARD FOR THE ROYALS TO FIND: Goudeau was an easy guy for the Royals to scout. He played his collegiate ball in the city of Kansas City and he grew up in relatively nearby St. Louis. “During my two years (in college) we went to a lot of Royals games, so it was kind of cool to play with the team that’s right there that you watched play. He said because the Royals were the team that drafted him, it made the decision to pass up Louisiana Lafayette. “I didn’t mind school, but the opportunity (to go pro) presented itself, and I thought it would be best to take it.”

SWEET ROAD TRIP: “I found out (I got called up to Adv.-A on May 17). They told me right after our game. I had to fly back to Lexington because we were on a roadtrip, then I had a 10-hour drive (to Wilm-ington). Nobody likes being in the car for too long, but it’s never a bad thing to make that type of drive.”

I think the experience from last year to this year helped me a lot. I knew what to expect going back to Lexington and I didn’t put so much pressure on myself. I just played the game as I’ve played it my whole life. I think I’m just more relaxed and I had a better start to this year... (Moving to Florida) was a baseball deci-sion…my dad basically said that he thought I had a better chance of getting drafted out of Florida than Puerto Rico…It was a great decision and I think that’s why I got drafted, because of my experience playing in Florida... I like Carlos Beltran and Roberto Clemente before (that). I never got a chance to see (Clemente) play, but Roberto Clemente has the best character. He died trying to help others so I try to follow his character and try to mimic him. Right now one of my favorite players is Carlos Beltran. He’s Puerto Rican, he plays baseball the right way so I try to mimic both of them.”

I’ve been talking to Abraham Nunez…I’ve known him for two or three years, he’s a really good hitting coach. He’s been talking to me about my feel for the type of ballpark we have in Wilmington. (left-center and right-center) is my approach. When I hit the ball hard I’m always thinking double...I don’t always think offensively, baseball is offense and defense. If someday I’m not hitting well, I try to practice my defense, too...I don’t change my swing (for homeruns). I just think about hitting the ball hard. I think my approach is to hit doubles, but if I can hit a homerun it’s good, I’ll take it. If I just try to play well then everything will be fine.”

My mom’s father was in the Air Force and my dad’s parents were both teachers in the Department of Defense so that’s how they met in Germany. They both joined the Army while they were in Germany so that’s where I was born. I only lived for a couple of years and I’ve bounced all around. I’ve lived in Dallas, Texas. I’ve lived in San Diego and I cur-rently live in Salt Lake City...The biggest thing is picking a routine and sticking to it. For me, I try to have an approach of hitting the ball the other way and to swing down, hit groundballs and line drives. If you pop the ball up you have no chance of getting a hit so I try to stick to that routine everyday and, also, just take it one day at a time...This is my first time in Delaware. I haven’t been able to get around very much since I just got my car on Tuesday). I was able to meet some of the fans today; great people. I’m excited to get this year started.”

I pick out a spot and I pick out a pitch that I like and try to stay disciplined and only look for that one. (I try to) not give in and swing at marginal pitches. Everybody gives in and chases once in awhile but I try to limit that and really stick to the part of the zone that I’m looking for. A lot of (what I’m looking for) is getting a feel for what the guy is doing to you (pattern-wise) and also what are your strengths and what you can do best. You want to do what you can do, not let the pitcher dictate what you do in the at-bat. You’ve got to stay in control and just stick to what you do best and what you like to hit, especially when you’re ahead in the count... Lineup-wise, there’s just as much talent now (as there was at the beginning of the season). Great guys came up to fill for guys who moved on. I feel like it’s always a difficult adjustment with a new group of guys, it’s almost like a new team personal-ity in the second-half. There’s just too much talent here not to win.”
