Die GGSG schreibt einen Förderpreis für die beste Dissertation auf dem Gebiet dergermanistischen Sprachgeschichte aus.

Der Förderpreis wird in Erinnerung an den Sprachwissenschaftler Peter vonPolenz (1928–2011) verliehen.

Der Preis soll in der Regel alle zwei Jahre verliehen werden und ist mitzunächst 1.000 Euro dotiert. Gestiftet wird das Preisgeld jeweils zur Hälfte vomAkademie-Verlag und der Gesellschaft für Germanistische Sprachgeschichte.Preisträger/innen erhalten für zwei Jahre beitragsfreie Mitgliedschaft in derGGSG sowie die Möglichkeit, die mit dem Peter von Polenz-Preis ausgezeichneteArbeit kostenlos in der Reihe Lingua Historica Germanica im Akademie-Verlag zupublizieren.

Vorschlagsberechtigt sind die habilitierten Mitglieder der GGSG. Selbstbewer-bungen sind nicht möglich. Die Arbeit muss in deutscher Sprache abgefasstund mindestens mit der Note „magna cum laude“ (oder vergleichbar)bewertet worden sein. Die Frist für die Einreichung ist jeweils der 30. April desJahres der Preisverleihung. Die erste Preisverleihung ist für die vom 26. bis 28.September 2013 in Kassel stattfindende Jahrestagung der GGSG vorgesehen. Überdie Vergabe entscheidet eine Jury.

Dem Vorschlag beizufügen sind:– zwei Exemplare der Arbeit (im Manuskript oder in bereits gedruckter Form)– eine thesenartige Zusammenfassung, in der vor allem die methodischen und

theoretischen Grundlagen sowie Zielsetzung und Ergebnisse der Arbeit kurzskizziert werden

– eine kurze Begründung (ca. eine Seite) durch den/die Vorschlagende/n– Kopien der Gutachten

Samuel L. Popkin, The Candidate: What It Takes to Win – and Hold – the White House (New York: Oxford University Press, 2012)

Both Samuel L. Popkin, The Candidate: What It Takes to Win – and Hold – the White House (New York: Oxford University Press, 2012) and Robert S. Erikson and Christopher Wlezien, The Timeline of Presidential Elections: How Campaigns Do (And Do Not) Matter (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2012) set out to address the ongoing question in political science about whether, when, and how campaigns affect American presidential elections. Both books ultimately argue that campaigns do matter, but the manner in which both go about making their arguments, as well as the data they use to do so, are vastly different one from the other.

Popkin relies on three in-depth case studies of recent presidential candidates. At the outset of their campaigns, all three seemed inevitable presidents, des-tined to win their bids for White House, yet each ultimately lost: Hillary Clinton in 2008, George H.W. Bush in 1992, and Al Gore in 2000. In addition to these three chapter-length case studies, Popkin intersperses dozens more historical anecdotes about post-WWII presidential campaigns. By contrast, Erikson and Wlezien largely analyze aggregate poll data from 1952 through 2008 in a highly-technical and methodologically sophisticated language, at points encouraging their “readers without a strong statistical bent” (p. 90) to skim or skip ahead in the text.

Both books, however, address questions about how much, why, and what events cause voter preferences to shift. Beyond that, Erikson and Wlezien ask to what extent these changes in aggregate voter preference persist to Election Day. Read concurrently, they convince that campaigns can and do matter in modern-day presidential elections. Yet the two books approach the question in

Wie das Wagnis der beiden AutorInnen zeigt, kann es spannend und anregendsein, als LinguistIn literarische Werke zu untersuchen. Die Darstellung vonMündlichkeit in Erzählungen ist eine Herausforderung für SchriftstellerInnenund insbesondere für deren ÜbersetzerInnen. Welche Möglichkeiten der Insze-nierung von Mündlichkeit SchriftstellerInnen nutzen und welche StrategienÜbersetzerInnen anwenden, um die je spezifischen Ausprägungen von Münd-lichkeit in die Zielsprache zu transferieren, zeigen Johannes Schwitalla und Lii-sa Tiittula am Beispiel von sechs deutschen Romanen und deren Übersetzungenins Finnische, fünf finnischen Romanen einschließlich deren Übertragungen insDeutsche und an einem finnisch-schwedischen Roman, der sowohl ins Fin-nische, das dem Schwedischen gesellschaftlich-kulturell nahe steht, als auchins sprachlich dem Schwedischen verwandte Deutsche übersetzt wurde. BeideAutorInnen haben sich viele Jahre mit der gesprochenen Sprache und dem Ge-spräch beschäftigt. So erklärt sich auch die dezidierte und linguistisch präziseBeschreibung der gesprochensprachlichen Phänomene.

Das Buch lässt sich in drei Teile gliedern. Der erste Teil führt in die Absichtund Fragestellungen der Studie ein und expliziert Begrifflichkeiten wie Erzähler-und Figurenrede. In diesem Teil geben die AutorInnen auch einen Einblick indie Mündlichkeits-Traditionen der Literatur des jeweiligen Landes (Deutschlandund Finnland) und deren Veränderungen seit den 30er Jahren des letzten Jahr-hunderts bis heute. Auch die Einstellungen der beiden Länder zur Umgangs-sprache und zum Dialekt werden erläutert. Daneben behandeln die AutorInnendie besonderen Schwierigkeiten und Eigenheiten des Übersetzens von Dialogizi-tät und Mündlichkeit in der Literatur – mit Blick auf den kulturell möglicher-weise unterschiedlichen Stellenwert von Mündlichkeit und Dialekt in der Litera-tur und in der jeweiligen Gesellschaft. Auch die Probleme, die beim Übersetzenmündlicher Formen in literarischen Texten auftreten, thematisieren Schwitallaund Tiittula. Interessant sind auch die Schwierigkeiten, die sich aufgrund derunterschiedlichen Sprachsysteme und Sprachgebrauchsnormen ergeben. Sokennt das Finnische nur ein Genus und verwendet heute keine genusspezi-fischen Anredeformen wie Herr X oder Frau Y. Schwitalla und Tiittula weisenweiter darauf hin, dass Übersetzungen eines Originals ganz unterschiedlich aus-fallen können. Ihre Umsetzung ist abhängig von den Zielen der ÜbersetzerIn-nen, den gesellschaftlichen Zwängen, in welchen diese stehen, und den jeweili-gen Normen und Erwartungen der LeserInnen und Verlegerinnen.

Die Schriftstellerin Rosa Liksom verwendet in ihrem Roman Kreisland dennordfinnischen Dialekt, den sie auf allen sprachlichen Ebenen realisiert. Figu-renvariation stilisiert sie mit syntaktischen Mitteln. Ihr Roman gilt aufgrund desDialekts als schwer übersetzbar. Um Ton und Atmosphäre des Romans wieder-zugeben, hat der Übersetzer auf andere Mittel zurückgegriffen und sich für einesüddeutsche Varietät mitsamt ihren syntaktischen, lexikalischen und morphe-matischen Eigenheiten entschieden. Trotzdem scheint die Übersetzung normge-rechter als das Original zu sein – mit der Folge, dass sich der Fokus stärker aufInhalt und Komik der Darstellung verschiebt.

Dem schwedischen Roman Colorado Avenue von Lars Sund wurden die bei-den Übersetzungen ins Finnische und ins Deutsche gegenübergestellt. Inte-ressant ist, dass im Finnischen die englischen Passagen des Originals über-nommen wurden, wohingegen sie in der deutschen Übersetzung gleichfallsübersetzt wurden. Auch hat der im Original verwendete Dialekt eine finnischeEntsprechung, nicht aber in der deutschen Übersetzung, die die Standardspra-che bevorzugt. Im Original finden sich weitere Textsorten, deren typografischeElemente für die finnische, nicht aber für die deutsche Version kopiert wurden.So wird ein Filmskript in die Form des Dramas transformiert. Gerade der Ver-gleich der beiden Übersetzungen macht die Wahlmöglichkeiten der Übersetzerund deren Folgen für die LeserInnen deutlich.

Schwitalla und Tiittula breiten das gesamte Spektrum der Möglichkeiten,Mündlichkeit in der Literatur darzustellen, aus. Sie zeigen deren Potenzial, de-ren Rolle für die literarische Gestaltung eines Romans entlang der Analysen derWerke und deren Wirkung. Zugleich werden Verantwortung, Schwierigkeitenund auch die Chancen der ÜbersetzerInnen deutlich, wenn es darum geht, adä-quate Möglichkeiten einer ‚werkgetreuen‘ Translation zu finden und die Viel-schichtigkeit, die in der Vielfalt der Stimmen liegen kann, in der Zielspracheund Zielkultur zu erhalten. Auch wenn die Analysen der AutorInnen wiederholtsehr ins Detail gehen, ist das Buch nicht nur für KollegInnen der Translations-wissenschaft ein Gewinn, sondern für alle, die sich für Kultur und Sprache inte-ressieren.

La version roumaine de la Religion dans les limites de la seule raison inaugure la

série des éditions critiques des œuvres kantiennes en langue roumaine, publiée

sous une unité terminologique et conceptuelle, selon l’édition de l’Académie de

Berlin, par Rodica Croitoru en collaboration avec les Éditions BIC ALL. La pré-

sente édition de la Religion dans les limites de la seule raison souligne l’intention

de présenter tel quel le texte kantien en langue roumaine, et non de présenter une

traduction qui va à la rencontre du lecteur en opérant des coupures de l’ampleur

de la phrase kantienne à l’aide d’une ponctuation supplémentaire; de même la

terminologie a été maintenue conformément à l’index des concepts allemands/

roumains, placé à la fin du livre. Il y a, dans cet ouvrage, trois cas particuliers: a) le

pour traduire ce terme ont tenté de capter la présence du but en quelque chose, en

forgeant le terme provisoire «fiintarea unui scop» (c’est-à-dire «l’étant d’un but»).

Au fil du temps, le vocabulaire philosophique roumain a renoncé à cette tra-

duction, en introduisant le terme «finalitate», s’inspirant du français «finalité»,

formé sur celui de «fin», comme l’anglais «purposiveness», formé sur «purpose».

Un processus analogue peut être signalé en ce qui concerne «Erlaubnisgesetz», la

loi qui permet d’effectuer une action, et son contraire «Zwangsgesetz», qui limite

la liberté de l’action de l’individu. Les langues romaines ont eu recours aux adap-

tations locales du latin «permito, ere» et sur les plans «coerceo, ere». Ainsi le rou-

main, aux plans philosophique et juridique, a adopté les termes «lege permisivà»

et «lege coercitivà». La présente édition est accompagnée d’une ample étude

introductive, dans laquelle sont analysées les idées de l’essai kantien, telles que

l’organisation internationale, l’autorité politique, les formes d’état, la constitu-

tion républicaine, la liberté juridique, l’action historique, la communauté hu-

maine, l’impératif moral, ainsi que leurs interprétations classiques et contempo-

raines. Il s’agit d’une étude détaillée et approfondie, bref exemplaire, qui mérite

d’être traduite à son tour.

Performance evaluation of human cytokines profiles obtained by various multiplexed-based technologies underlines a need for standardization

Abstract

Background: Multiplexed methods permit simultaneous

quantification of multiple cytokines. As several manufac-

turers offer reagents to quantify the same cytokines on a

single instrument, comparison of the distribution should

be made to determine whether these data are comparable

from one assay to another.

Methods: We performed the quantification of cytokines in

serum samples with three commercially available assays:

Cytometric Bead Array (CBA), Protein Biochip Array Tech-

nology (PBAT), and Luminex Technology analysis. Using

detection limit and reference range of the three commer-

cial multiplex technologies, we evaluated: 1 ) the overall

distribution of cytokines; and 2 ) the clinical impact.

Results: The three cytokines, IL-1 β , IL-1 α and IL-4, cannot

be measured by these methods because of the high number

of non-detected data ( > 50%). By contrast, four cytokines as

IL-8, VEGF, MCP-1 and EGF exhibited a low percentage of

non-detected data whatever method was used. The compari-

son of the percentage of samples with values higher than

the respective reference range of each method reported an

absence of clinical concordance (Cohen ’ s κ -test < 0.40).

Conclusions: Our results highlight the lack of transfe-

rability between the three commercially available multiplex

methods evaluated (CBA, PBAT and Luminex Techno logy).

Analytical performances are adequate for longitudinal

studies using a same methodology but caution should

be used for comparisons between results obtained with

different methods underlying a need for standardization.

Introduction Multiplex protein analysis (MPA) has been developed to

quantify cytokines and chemokines in biological fluids.

Conventional ELISA usually requires a minimal sample

volume of 100 μ L per analyte to be tested. In contrast, MPA

allows simultaneous measurement of several analytes in

the same low volume of biological sample. Two prominent

MPA technologies exist: bead-based assays [including

Cytometric Bead Array (CBA) and Luminex 100 system],

and Protein Biochip Array Technology (PBAT) [ 1 , 2 ]. In

the former, miniaturized sites are distributed on a three-

dimensional (3D) surface, while a 2D surface is involved

in the latter. With 3D surfaces, parallel analysis can be

achieved by using different pools of these (usually beads),

each covered with a unique protein or capture agent while

2D surfaces immobilize arrays of different proteins or

capture agents distributed in spots containing a unique

substance.

Sepsis is one example where changes in multiple

cytokines mediate the disease pathogenesis. So, the

profile of multiple cytokines in serum levels would provide

greater insight into their utility for staging patients with

sepsis, compared with previous studies focusing on single

biomarkers. The multiplex system provides the oppor-

tunity to establish a panel of cytokines and to identify

distinct cytokine profiles associated with sepsis severity,

evolution of organ failure and mortality [ 3 ]. This cap ability

allows the laboratory to simultaneously profile multiple

markers for diagnostic and pronostic purposes and to

1 Einleitung

Das Institut für Bibliotheks- und Informationswissen-schaft der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (IBI) ist in Leh-re und Forschung auf Bibliotheks- und Informationswis-senschaft fokussiert. Darunter ist hier die Wissenschaft1

population had some advantages because the patients

were not in acute phase, with a limited treatment which

reduces the interference with cytokine measurement.

Despite this, we noted a discrepancy between the low

values of CRP and the high percentage of disease state

samples cases of 37% – 85% and 43% – 54% for IL-8 and

IFN- γ , respectively. This information confirms again that

the interpretation must be cautious. In addition, because

the aim of our study was to compare the results between

the three systems available on the markets and not to

stratify routine patients, the selection of population was

of a lesser importance. It would have been interesting to

have a consecutive samples for each patient for a better

clinical interpretation. Unfortunately, the main objective

of this collection originally consisted of a single sample

at baseline, so we do not have additional samples at a

diffe rent date for these subjects. It is clear that changes of

serial marker results are due not only to deterioration or

amelioration of the subject ’ s condition, but also to preana-

lytical sources of variation, analytical variation and intra-

individual normal biological variation which is critical for

interpretation and analysis of the clinical utility. Having

established the reference change value, a dynamic serial

measurement in physiological or pathological conditions

is mandatory to evaluate the reliability of these methods.

To complete the study, it would have been neces-

sary to compare the results with ELISA assays which

remain the reference technique, but in view of the previ-

ous various studies, the comparisons with ELISA assays

of the various cytokines are not convincing. Furthermore,

in clinical practice, it is profiles of cytokines that interest

the clinicians, and are already widely used. The major

advance in this domain would be an effort of standardiza-

tion between techniques.

Altogether, our data confirm the possibility of use

multiplexed assays for the cytokines determination in

clinical practice. However, dynamic ranges, percentage

of NDs, reference ranges are clearly analyte dependent

for each cytokines and each system. Thus, with the multi-

plex methods of analysis of cytokines currently available,

it is recommended that the quantitative determination of

cytokines should be interpreted with caution and whether

the platform is in the process of the standardization should

be determined. In addition, due to the lack of standardiza-

tion and the poor transferability of results from one platform

to another, the use of the same platform in the course of a

study for the follow-up of patients ’ needs to be considered.

Furthermore, given that there are research findings

showing that active engagement of participants is a criti-

cal factor for the program implementation process [27, 28] ,

there is a need to explore this aspect further.

The present study clearly replicated and extended

the findings in the first piloting exercise. However, there

are several limitations of the study. First, only 19 lectures

were observed; thus, it would be desirable to include

more lectures for observations in the future. Second,

aside from the quality of implementation dimensions

adopted in this study, additional dimensions, such as the

degree of involvement and care of the instructor as well

as the learning opportunities in the subject, should be

included. Third, generalization of the present findings to

other settings should proceed with caution because of the

small sample size involved. Despite these limitations, in

conjunction with previous research findings, the present

findings strongly suggest that the quality of implementa-

tion of the subject, “ Tomorrow ’ s Leaders, ” is high and the

course is able to promote psychosocial competencies in

the students taking this course.

a significant effect on the mechanical properties such

as hardness and impact strength, and the properties

such as tensile strength and flexural strength are

found to be deteriorated for both FGMs/homogeneous

composites with respect to 0 wt % CBPD, and that too

decreases with filler loading.

2. FGMs show better wear behavior as compared to the

homogeneous composites, and 12 wt % CBPD reinfor-

ced vinyl ester resin graded composite is the most

effective reinforcement to improve wear resistance at a

higher sliding velocity and at a higher load.

3. Graded hybrid composites possess fairly good

potential for application in dry wear environment.

Wear characteristics of these composites can be

successfully analyzed using Taguchi’s experimental

design scheme. FGMs exhibit much higher wear

resistance than homogeneous composites under

similar test conditions. This investigation establishes

that wear rate can be improvised if a suitable

fabrication technique is adopted.

4. From the ANOVA, it is clearly observed that abrasive

medium and fiber loading have a significant effect,

whereas normal load has the least effect as compared

to other significant factors as far as specific wear rate

is concerned.

5. The worn surface micrographs of the homogeneous/

FGMs composites show the associated wear

mechanisms responsible for the wear behavior as is

found experimentally.
