Heat Transfer Coeffi cient (HTC) for Secondary CoolingIn secondary cooling nozzles are spraying water on the strand. During this process a steam layer develops between the strand surface and the water. If there are great diffe-rences in temperature, this steam buffer will be relatively stable and its effect will be an insulation.

The most relevant factor for the heat transfer is the impact density of the sprayed water. Therefore the water distribu-tion on the strand surface is very important for the cooling quality. The water quantity per given surface area depends on the distance of the nozzle from the strand surface.

The nozzle characteristic would result in HTC character-istics. The steep gradients of the HTC in connection with its high maximum is causing great temperature differences on the strand surface.

It is not possible to have a nozzle characteristic that meets the requirements of all applications. To achieve a good uni-form distribution of the HTC in continuous casting cooling it is therefore necessary to take care of a nozzle layout for each section that performs a good overlap of the individual nozzle characteristics.

An effi cient Secondary Cooling System shows the following features:

Uniform cooling of the strand surface• High process effi ciency due to the maximum evaporation • of the cooling waterFast removal of the residual water off the strand surface•

Today there are two mainCooling Processes:

Hydraulic Cooling• Strand cooling with Hydraulic Nozzles Air Atomizing Cooling• Strand cooling with Air Atomizing Nozzles

Most of the continuous casting installations are nowadays equipped with Air Atomizing Nozzles.

Features of Hydraulic Cooling Process:

Water is the only cooling media that the nozzles apply • to the strand Variation of the cooling capacity is only possible • by changing the water pressure Uniform distribution• Small droplets and a defi ned drop size spectrum• Fast transportation of the water off the hot slab surface•

Features of Air Atomizing Cooling Process:

Fine drop size spectrum leads to fast heat transfer and high • cooling effi ciency Nozzle manage poor water quality due to large free passages • (little clogging risk). This increases the productivity of the installation A large turn down ratio allows adjustment of the cooling • capacity according to the various steel grades and assures high quality High impact improves the effi ciency of the cooling process • by means of the fast heat transfer Fast and easy cleaning minimizes time and cost for • maintenance

Introduction

CasterJet Nozzles…… are famous because of their outstanding uniform distri-bution, above average turn down ratio, low air consumption and impressing heat transfer all along with little clogging risk.

Our CasterJet design with plate connection helps to speed up set-up time of the machines (e.g. for twin strand ma-chines) and reduces maintenance time and cost.

Air Atomizing Rectangle FullJet…… have been designed to better meet the technical requi-rement for cooling of complex surfaces like billet caster. These nozzles have a smaller capacity than conventional hydraulic nozzles and are much less sensitive for clogging. Installations with these nozzles have shown better and more consistent quality of the steel and higher effi ciency of the process.

Hydraulic Rectangle FullJet… … have been designed to meet the special technical condi-tions in continuous casting of thin slab when it becomes to heat transfer. The special characteristics of these nozzles have a high contribution to the quality achieved in thin slab production.

Higher strand speed, more sophisticated steel qualities, and all-round machines (TWIN) ask for nozzles that can meet the increased challenge of today.

Our engineers have worked on solutions for the new pro-cesses. In addition to the large variety of standard nozzles for continuous casting they have designed special nozzles for various applications:

• CasterJet Air Atomizing Nozzles• Air Atomizing Rectangle FullJet Nozzles• Hydraulic Rectangle FullJet Nozzles

Nozzles improve quality and effi ciency of Continuous Casting Cooling Installations

Air Atomizing Nozzles

The benefi ts of our CasterJet Nozzles:Reduced air consumption• Large free passage• Uniform distribution over full pressure range• Stable spray angle starting already at 1 bar water pressure• Reduced cost of water due to effective heat transfer• Above average turn down ratio with almost constant drop size • spectrum over large operating range Enables the nozzles to meet the requirements of changing • strand speed and steel dimensions and grade Almost non clogging due to the patented CasterJet design • with the two stage atomizationModular, service friendly design• Maintenance friendly assembly of the units outside the roll • installation (PlateCasterJet) Good cooling of components between the rolls due to small • droplets (water mist) in the low pressure range

CasterJet Nozzles – Better cooling with lower air and water consumption

CasterJet nozzles are state of the art nozzles for continu-ous casting cooling. They produce an extraordinary dense water-air-mixture which results in an excellent uniform cooling of the strand surface.

Our engineers have considered the various applications and have developed different special designs:• BlockCasterJet• PipeCasterJet• PlateCasterJet
