Functions

Centring

The surface line of the ODsleeve centres the measuringinstrument automatically inthe bore. The length of thesleeve is chosen in accordan-ce with the diameter, inorder to obtain an optimalalignment of the gauge inthe bore.

Transfer of the measuring travel

An expanding probe withmeasuring contacts is loca-ted inside the plug gauge.This probe is split open bythe wedge-shaped measur-ing needle made of wear-resisting tungsten carbide.

Through the wedge of themeasuring needle, the radialmovement of the measuringcontacts is transferred freeof backlash to the unit usedfor the length measurement.The precisely grinded wedgeof the measuring needleguarantees an excellentlinearity.

Construction

The OD system consists ofthe following components:

- indicating unit (dial gauge,precision indicator, etc...)

- holder with thread connec-tion M 11 x 0,75 - suitablefor all OD measuring sleeves

- exchangeable measuringsleeves made of hardenedand grinded tool steel, hardchromed on request, adjus-ted to each bore diameterwith tolerance, with an inte-grated expanding probe andwedge-shaped needle

- options, for example depthstop, measuring depthextension, etc...

- reference, for example setting ring, reference piece,etc....

General Remarks

The OD plug gauge is amechanical two-point con-tact comparator measuringinstrument suited formanual or automatic mea-surement.

Each measuring instrumentis specially tailored to suit a specific diameter and thecorresponding tolerance.

The OD plug gauge servesfor the measurement ofbores with a diameter from2,5 up to 500 mm, as wellas their deviations in form,without searching for thereversal point on the indica-ting unit.

For the indication of themeasuring value, precisionindicators, mechanical orelectronic dial gauges orelectronic probes can beused.

The OD plug gauge is arobust and easy to use com-parator measuring instru-ment, which is conceived forthe series control of bores.

The OD plug gauge is ideallysuited wherever it is neces-sary to get a quick and reli-able measuring result:

The OD plug gauge is theideal replacement for usualplug gauges, whenever thestatement „good / bad“ isnot satisfying enough.Furthermore, it is possible touse it either manually, or asa part of a fully automaticmeasuring station.

No tilting

The unique insertion cham-fer of the measuring sleeveprevents any tilting whenentering the measuring in-strument in the bore.

High service life/robustness

The robust OD measuringsleeves are made of harden-ed tool steel, grinded to therequired diameter and aresuitable for the use in theproduction.

As an option, hard chromedmeasuring sleeves are avail-able, which offer more protection against wear andcorrosion.

The measuring contacts areas a standard fitted withtungsten carbide balls. Thewedge-shaped measuringneedle is generally made oftungsten carbide.

Through the modular sys-tem, the OD system enablesa very easy maintenance.

Easy setting

As setting references, sett-ing rings are often used inpractice; the use of masterpieces or external microme-ters is also possible.

Cross sleeve with runners

From diameter 130 mm,SCHWENK offers the so-called cross sleeve or cross sleeve with runners. Inopposition to the conven-tional full round OD sleeve,the cross sleeve (with run-ners) presents advantagesregarding the weight andthe handling when measur-ing large diameters.
