l The new generations including older ones have the wish to possess many gadgets. As soon as a new mobile appears or the latest brand of walking shoes we want to have it…We want everything and immediately. The people nowadays are so much sensitive to the problem of freedom that they confuse freedom and selfishness.

As members of Terre des Hommes Alsace we think of another availability: time given to help

needy children, and also the donations given or asked for to make our actions happen. Our availability is a positive effort to help other human beings and give them a future. We change from selfishness to fraternity. Not being available means to be concerned only by oneself and never to listen to the needs of the others especially of the children. All the members of Terre des Hommes Alsace wish to help distressed children. Our association is based on voluntary participation. To be a volunteer is to be a component necessary for the functioning of our association. It determines our philosophy and our history. The commitment of each volunteer is filled with sense and satisfaction. In the name of the Administrative Committee, I wish to thank each person who helps Terre des Hommes Alsace, the persons who sell the clothes , the ones who sell oranges and Easter-bunnies, the young ones who organize gatherings, the choirs who give concerts, all the associations without forgetting the sponsors and donators and our partners in the field.

The negative balance of assets of the 2012 exercise had been foreseen as we had decided to allocate 10.000 € to each of our programs for our 40th Anniversary.

So, no worry, but we must not slacken our efforts. The continuity of your help is essential. THANK YOU!

..BALANCE SHEET 2012 !

The 2012 takings are lower by 8% compared to 2011(please note that in 2011 we had received an important donation of 40.000 €)

Sponsorships and donations represent 74% of the collected funds (474 758 €). The results of the Operation Oranges are lower by 14% (37 155 €). The "Easter bunnies" sales have been very successful and brought a sum of 33 000 €. We could as usual rely on our volunteers to represent our association during many events. The sales realized by them totalized 8 000 € and many working hours.

Takings 2012 : 641 916 €

Our association functions since more than 40 years through voluntary help which reduces considerably the expenses. The managing costs represent only 1.01% of the expenses (7550 €). The actions (money sent to our partners) represent 692 131 € (92.95% of the costs)

Expenses 2012 : 744 633 €

We have helped our usual partners and answered some punctual calls also in France. Some members of the AC have been sent during the year to control that the money given has been used for the best. We used some of our reserves to cover the exceptional donation for the 40th Anniversary.

Clean water for the people who most need itIn a rural environment, the geographical and climatic conditions and the bad hygienic conditions are the main factors for infectious pathologies. The local populations have often no direct access to medical care and have to take into account precarious sanitary situations.

In the scope of the special subvention allocated for the 40th Anniversary, we decided to support the village of Gia Canh by fitting 2 new stations for the treatment of drinking water for a sum of 260 000 000 VND (about 10 000 €).

The village of Gia Canh belongs to the faraway mountain villages and covers a surface of 17 000 hectares with 12 000 hectares of forests and plantations for a population of 21 000 people. Because of its large area and the big population the people’s movements are difficult and the levels of education are unequal. Ethnic Minorities represent 1/3 of the population: Cho’Ro, Khmer ou Kho’me, Châu Ma, Murong, Nung Tay…

The access to clean water is low, presently 700 families have no drinking water for their daily use and lack totally water during the dry season.

The realization of these installations shall have an immediate impact on the people’s

health especially concerning the food security (digestive, hepatic illnesses as well as diverse diseases transmitted by parasites).

These installations shall belong to the local Authorities who shall maintain them and care for their functioning. For this project, we called our friend Marc Demuynck from the Association “the children of the dragon” who had already be our partner for the realization of the project of the water pumps in Vietnam, sponsored by the children of the St-Joseph school at Rouffach in 2011.

. SENEGAL

Journey to Senegal from November 7th to 21th 2012For that 2nd journey to Gamadji we planned to spend a whole week in the program and thus have time to start some project with the cooking-mothers and with the school children.

The 7th of November was for the journey. The day after, with our partner we drove around Dakar looking for material that cannot be found in the village. Dakar seems huge, with big avenues which do not absorb all the traffic. Plenty of shops with very high prices, and not foreseen for the “normal” Senegalese. That lets you with the markets where you can find almost anything: pots and pans, school books, clothes, mobiles etc…the crowd is very colourful, with local traditional clothing or with European gear.

The next day, after a 8 hour drive, we reached the N’Dioum Inn where we had already stayed during our 1st trip. We unpacked our things and went to the local market: that consisted of a 4km walk and return under a temperature of 40°C. Luckily we could buy bottles of water at decent prices along the road.

That 1st walk showed us that the prices had gone up quite a bit since last time.

On the 10th of November, the day started with the welcoming ceremony at the school. Talks, dances of the women, of the children and surprise: a group of children with a teacher sung the French and the Senegalese Anthems.

The next day we spent at the school, visit of the children, of the teachers and also of the cooking-mothers. The meal consisted of rice with lots of fried onions and zebu meat in little pieces. The individual ration of meat is about 10 to 20 grams. Depending on the season, the meal can be enriched with vegetables coming from the local production. The zebu can be replaced by chicken also of local production. These

local productions do not generate any income, as we had hoped at the beginning, but vary the daily diet of the children.

While we were eating, the wind started and sent plenty of sand in the dishes where the children were eating. We decided with the director the necessity to build

a protected yard with the exceptional subvention allocated for the 40th Anniversary.

We went back to school on the 12th of November for

the control of the bookkeeping, visit of the field and pedagogical garden. No worry concerning the accounts which were correct and well documented.

On the field, the floods of October last took away 4 acres of eggplants and ruined the onions plantations. What a pity, because eggplants are selling well on the local markets!

The garden had been started, a bit late because it had to be fenced first, then a water pipe had to be fixed and then they had to wait for the machine to prepare the soil, hard as concrete, and train a teacher for the care

of the plants. The children shall come in little groups and shall be supervised by teachers trained by their colleague.

We could organize a small expedition for the singers of hymns. We took them to visit a school at N’Dioum, on the other side of the river. We had to go on a Ferry-boat to cross the river. For most of the children it was their very first trip outside Gamadji.

Then, we prepared a feast for the mothers. We cooked different sorts of donuts and popcorn to offer to the 225 cooking-mothers.

We cooked in basins on a wood-fire. And it did work!!!

. PERU

I shall tell you about our 3rd partner in Peru: the popular canteen of San Luis, another very poor

district of Lima.

News from our programs

Our partners' activities for the popular canteensWe sponsor presently 4 popular canteens (comedores) in the South suburbs of Lima. What is a popular canteen?

In these suburbs where unemployment reaches a very high level (more than 50% of the population) the families are reduced to begging. In fact the children suffer mostly from malnutrition and hunger. The parishes and other charity organisms try their best by providing a hot meal a day. That meal is cooked by mothers, the purchase of food financed by donations. Terre des Hommes Alsace finances 4 such canteens and feeds about 480 children. Around these communities, a training structure has been built as well for the children as for their mothers.

In 2012, a certain number of workshops have been functioning:• How to develop your possibilities• Environment and protection of the water• How to fight intolerance• Meals: a balanced diet

• Violence in the family

As usual, the children suffer mostly (physically and morally) in these difficult surroundings and your generosity brings them hope. J.J.Kieffer

Préparation des repas par les mamans

The present situation in Peru at the beginning of 2013The autumn 2011 has known Presidential and Parliamentary elections. The Peruvian people had hoped for changes following them. Unfortunately only timid reforms were started but all the promises

of social incorporation and fight against poverty are slow to take place and are bringing movements of strike and dissatisfaction.

project...INDIA

The Year 2012 is definitely closed, after the financial results of Terre des Hommes Alsace, here are some figures concerning our actions at Terre des Hommes Core. With your sponsorship and your donations we could help 892 children in the South of India last year. It is really an impressive number thanks to your help. The money we send there goes to partners who try to solve incredible situations. These people do not count their working hours, and

put all their energy to help children and day after day cross the potholed roads of the state of Tamil Nadu to bring help, support, advices to improve the daily life of distressed children. In our next issue, I shall tell you about Calcutta and the association South Point our main partner in the

North of India.

Tania Fuchs

Tiruvannamalai

• 54 children live in homes and are totally dependent on our help• 44 children were saved from exploitation thanks to the program STEP• Our partners did interventions for 442 children in the scope of the Flying Children

Service. They went to families, dispensed care to the children, organized operations, brought material for handicapped children, taught parents physiotherapy gestures which help their children to autonomy such as: eat alone, walk, get dressed etc….

• 103 children are followed in the scope of “Early Intervention Center”. Two dispensaries with trained and competent personnel welcome handicapped children and their parents for daily exercising.

• 65 children get financial help for schooling• 184 children have been saved through the project “Child Line”( realized in a partnership

with the Government). By calling a green number: 1098, at any time day or night, a social worker is going to assist any child asking for help

We could help 892 children...

. MADAGASCAR

A Max for Mada

A little reminder of our projects :

For the 40th Anniversary of Terre des Hommes Alsace, the Administrative Committee decided to make a special appeal for the children of Madagascar. Thus, we added another 3800 € to the sum collected for a Max for Mada;

Program to help the undernourished children at Antananarivo: This project cares for 150 children most of them in a state of acute malnutrition. Our idea is the construction of a covered yard to shelter them as well for the meals as for their schooling. They shall be protected from the sun or the rain.

The training towards hygiene is a real need, the children have no water at home and never wash their hands. For that purpose we wish to install sanitary appliances with a few wash basins.

We wish to educate the children who will educate their parents!

At the Fianarantsoa HospitalWe sponsor since 2006 the hospital costs, the care and the medicine as well as the food for the very poor families.

The welcome at the hospital is nevertheless very precarious. We have already worked a lot to improve the hygienic conditions but there is still a lot to be done.

We propose to fit out a room to welcome and care for the children.

Our other goal is to build a small playing area as the children heal faster if they can play.

Page 11: Photo: Brigitte Flammen - Sénégal 2012 TERRE DES HOMMES …terredeshommes-alsace.com/assets/bulletins/Bulletin110... · 2020. 7. 5. · Hommes Alsace wish to help distressed children

We were lucky to have volunteers organizing concerts or theatrical representations. Some media have also advertised our projects, we appeared at Television (Tele Doller). We printed a flyer which was widely distributed. An appeal was made in our 2 bulletins published in 2012.

Through that publicity, we collected 18.000 € and now we are able to realize the projects in the field with our partners.

Some have already started. The Center at Tana has achieved the building of the wash basins so that 150 children can wash their hands before a meal. While writing, the building of the covered playground has started and I shall discover it when there in April.During our journey we shall evaluate the urgency in

the project of the Pediatric Hospital at Fianarantsoa. We shall also meet Sister Barbot to invest some money in a project for the canteen.

Thank you all for your trust and your help. Thanks to you, we shall be able to change quite a lot of things. A better hygiene signifies also less illness. The children suffer almost from their birth from malnutrition and are particularly not resistant to illnesses like colds. These colds often turn to bronchitis, pneumonias or worse.

The access to drinking water at Madagascar is still very problematic and especially costly. The fountains are usually far away and the transport of water remains only for cooking, hygiene in that case stays very secondary.

It makes me wonder as I am working in a Maternal Center where washing hands lasts at least 5 minutes to ensure a perfect hygiene. And during all that time the water keeps running. I wash hands at least 10 times a day, which represents a big volume of water. We live in a world that to me seems sometimes incomprehensible.

Nevertheless some rural communities try to react by creating a number of small associations and realize concrete projects for the environment, education or health. One of these projects has been elaborated by the association KTPD at Dégravé in the valley of Artibonite: plantation of vetiver. That “miraculous” plant grown in shrubs detoxifies and purifies the polluted soils and stops their erosion. Very cheap, resistant against many illnesses, its roots have medicinal properties and 2 years after plantation, the reafforestation is possible.

This project lets local farmers live on their properties rather than go to the shanty towns of Port au Prince or turn into illegal workers in some

. HAÏTIAccount of a journey from October 19th

to November 12th 2012

In October-November 2012, we stayed 3 weeks in Haiti with the purpose of 2 weeks of work in a rural community and 1 week at Port au Prince with a visit of the program sponsored by Terre des Hommes Alsace.

ruines de l'Eglise de la Trinité

The signs of the earthquake of January 2010 are still visible. Most of the rubble has been cleared but big buildings such as the Trinity Church or the Presidential Palace are still showing an impressive amount of ruins. The camps of tents shelter 370.000 persons who live under precarious conditions. Five thousand amputees are part of the daily landscape. The shock reaction which was hoped for after the catastrophe has not been achieved. The infrastructures for schooling,

medical care, electricity works and communication means are disastrous. Less than 10% of the lodgings have water adduction. Deforestation for economic reasons is devastating. The accentuated erosion of the soils caused a deterioration of t of the farmers’ income who abandon their properties. Families try their luck in towns and land often in shanty-towns where their living conditions get worse. The life expectation lies around 62 years.

project...“welcoming” countries.

Our group of French and Swiss volunteers joined the rural community for that duty which consists in 2 distinct sequences:-1) put in plastic bags wisps of vetiver which shall be stored 4 months, the time necessary for producing roots adequate to start growing when planted - 2) plantation in the ground of the wisps put into bags 4 months earlier by Haitians. This project lets local farmers live on their land rather than join the shanty towns of Port au Prince or be illegal workers in some “welcoming” countries.

Visits (mills, schools, markets, hospitals, harnessing of springs, voodoo sites….) and meetings (teachers, farmers, painter…) did offer the opportunity to approach the Haitian way of life and create links.

The Program of Terre des Hommes Alsace:The re-schooling of Petit Goâve

Ecole traditionnelle aux Palmes

The cyclone Sandy forced me to cancel the visit of some programs (dispensaries, access to drinking-water…) in the Mountains of Cahos, the roads were getting too dangerous. Nevertheless I went to the

Palms, in the Haitian Mountains, and checked 3 schools ( of 35 with 4750 pupils in the project we sponsor). As a reminder: 60% of the Haitians older than 10 cannot write or read.

The teaching is done by teachers trained by our partner Inter-Aide. Their level is more secondary school than matriculation. Consultants and inspectors get everyone involved (pupils, parents, teachers, local associations, councils) and will probably perpetuate that project.

The new buildings are also very simple: one rectangle of stone walls (divided up) covered with a frame of wood supporting a roof of corrugated iron. The internal space is divided into classes by partitions at the best with stones at the worst by corrugated iron or wood or even by canvas sheets. The children are grouped and can be recognized by the uniform of their school. They have manual books and a minimal amount of material such as furniture and personal equipment such as a note-book and a pencil. The pedagogic material is very limited.

I am struck by the difficulties of the country to progress but amazed by the resistance of the Haitian population faced with enormous difficulties and its aptitude not to give up!

Coming back from Haiti is coming back from “another world” which you cannot forget and very difficult to talk about.
