These are the recommended directions to get to ILC. They are the best way to work with the move-in pro-cess that has been set-up for move-in day.

1. From Hwy 401 take Yonge St. turn east (left) onto Carlton St., turn south (right) on to Jarvis St. From the Gardiner Expressway take Jarvis St. north to Richmond St., turn left (west) on Richmond St., turn right (north) on Bay St., turn right (east) on College St. (becomes Carlton St.), turn right (south) on Jarvis St.

2. Please wait in the line-up of vehicles to unload your belongings. There are specific unloading areas that we have designated and have police officers and volunteers directing traffic to move you through the line as efficiently as possible. Please do not unload your belongings until you have reached the designated unloading area. Please expect a wait time of approximately 1 hour.

3. While your vehicle waits to move to the unloading zone, you can pick up your keys and a welcome package. Please bring a piece of photo identification with you to receive your keys. Only the student moving into residence can pick up their keys. Please ensure there is another driver in your vehicle who can stay with your car while you collect your keys. Please take the time while waiting in your vehicle to read through the package and familiarize yourself with its contents.

4. Once it’s your turn to move to the unloading zone, please follow the directions of the Move-In Team/Police Officers to move safely into the unloading zone off Jarvis St. Please note: Jarvis St. is a busy street, please ensure the driver does a double check before entering/exiting the flow of traffic and all passengers in the vehicle double check before exiting/entering your vehicle.

5. After your belongings have been unloaded, please move your vehicle immediately to a paid parking lot close by (parking lots are identified on the map on page 2). You cannot leave your vehicle in the unloading zone. We recommend you bring someone with you who is able to park the vehicle while you stay with your belongings. Do not park your vehicle on the street unless it is in a clearly defined parking area. Housing & Residence Life cannot be held responsible for any parking tickets you incur.

6. Ryerson Orientation Crew (ROC) members, Varsity Athletes, and University Staff will be available to help you move your belongings into the building. They’ll help you to find a cart to get you and your belongings into the line-up for the elevators. Please expect a wait time of approximately 2 hours.

7. Once you get to your room, please move your belongings off the cart as quickly as possible and return the cart to the elevators on the floor. Enjoy unpacking and setting up your room!

What to Expect

The Weather:As much as we’d like to control the weather, we haven’t quite mastered it yet. Most years we experience some rain on move in days. We suggest bringing something waterproof (e.g. tarp, pack belongings in plastic containers, etc.) to cover your belongings on move in day just in case we do get some showers.

After You’ve Moved In . . .

Residence Life & Education:The Residence Life Team (RLT) would like to officially welcome you to residence! Residence can be considered one of the most unique classrooms on a campus. It’s important to remember that living in residence is an opportunity to learn and grow individually, but also as a part of the Ryerson University Housing & Residence Life community. Every student has a Residence Advisor (RA) living on their floor whose role is to develop community within residence. Every student is also assigned an Academic Link (AL) who supports our students’ academic transition based on faculty or program. These roles, as well as our Varsity Link and Programming Link are all upper-year student leaders.

First Community Meeting (Mandatory!):

Your first community meeting will be taking place on August 27, 2017 at 4:00 pm. Your RA will be leaving you a note with the location of this meeting, which in most cases will be in your floor lounge or common space. This meeting is your first chance to officially meet your community for the year. Your RA will also share their tips and tricks for Orientation Week, your first week of classes and give you the lowdown on the policies and procedures you’ve agreed to while living in residence, also known as our Residence Community Standards. The most important thing to remember is most of our students are coming here without knowing anyone: this meeting is a great way to begin building the community you will soon call a home over the next 8 months! Following the meeting there will be a BBQ and evening orientation activities.

How to Pack:It’s a good idea to plan ahead and pack your belongings in a way that will make it easy for you to move them into residence. With over 800 students moving in on one day you can expect that you’ll be spending time wait-ing in line-ups, especially for the elevators. During this period you’ll be waiting in line with your belongings both outside and inside of the residence buildings while we get you into the elevators and up to your floor. We rent four-wheeled flat bed dollies/carts to hold your belongings and allow you to easily move through the line. The following are tips you can use to help yourself during this time.

Keep your photo identification easily availble. You will be asked to show identification before you pick up your keys.

Pack your belongings in stackable closed containers either plastic or cardboard. Floppy or open bags are VERY difficult to manage on move-in day. Cardboard can be flattened and recycled. Plastic bins can be used for other purposes or taken home by family.

Wrap any breakable items in blankets or towels you are bringing with you. This keeps them safe and doesn’t add unnecessary bulk to your items.

Label your boxes, containers & items. In the unlikely event that something gets misplaced, this will help identify your items. A few days before move-in your room number will be released in eRez, please use this information to label your boxes.

Pack your laptop in a separate backpack or bag that you wear on your person. This gives it extra protection during your move.

Buy things when you get here. Would you like to bring something, but you’re not sure how to pack it? You can wait and pick it up once you get here.

Keep usable water bottles easily available for you and your family/friends who are helping you to move in. It’s going to be hot and you’ll want to make use of the water station in the Pitman Quad.

Do NOT Pack:

Pets (of any kind or size)Candles OR hot plates- they are a fire hazard and open flames are banned in residenceExtra furniture - there is no additional storage availableHuge stereos with loud bassLoud musical instruments (i.e. electric guitars, drums, etc.) - they are a distruption to the communityAny illegal substance or item
