President's Message

Well, my first President's Message- in 14 years! That's right - youmay not know this, but I've donethis once before. You would have

thought that I learned my lesson!Or even more surprising, one wouldthink that the general membershipwho elected me would have learned

something in the last 14 years!In all seriousness, I'm lookingforward to the upcoming year and Ihope that we can continue with allthe good things that the previousExec Committees have accomplished,try some new things and, have FUNdoing it.

One feeling that I really want todispel right away is that of an"old guard" verses a "new guard"in the club. There seemed to be a

lot of rumbling about that lastyear. There is an interest bysome of the "long time" (notolder!) members to become activeagain, but the reason is to makethe newer members aware of the

traditions of the region. No oneis really interested in the clubor it's activities being like theywere back "in the old days", butthe things that made Riesentoterwhat it was is important to many.The 1989 Exec is definitelyinterested in the club meeting theneeds and wants of the 1989

members. Along these lines, Iwould welcome feedback and input.I know you've all heard thisbefore, but nobody ever seems tolet the current governing bodyknow what they want. I seriouslyhope that you will take the timeto call me or corner me at a

meeting.

We've already had our first Execmeeting and there seem to be a lotof good ideas being discussed. Ofcourse, the standard events, such

as the Wine Tasting, Picnic,Banquet, track events andautocrosses, etc will still be apart of the calendar, but theremay be some new and interestingtouches. There will be new thingshappening at the first generalmeeting in January! Art Rothe hasvolunteered to be our official

"greater" so that the new memberswill feel more welcome. The Exec

will be seated at a "head table"

so the members will know who we

are. (Of course, that may change,depending on how good we are atdodging those overripe vegetables.)Vern has assured us that DER

GASSER will be out on time withall the news that's fit to print.You should be getting sufficientadvanced notice for all upcomingevents. The Executive committee

meeting minutes will be publishedin DER GASSER so you will all beaware of what's coming up and whatwe are trying to accomplish.Also, there will be quarterlyfinancial statements published inDER GASSER to keep the membersaware of the financial health of

Riesentoter. Articles before and

after each event by thechairperson will hopefully sparkmember interest.

Jim Confer already has threedefinite track dates for the highspeed freaks. Art Rothe and RexCarle presented the best news - wehave an autocross site! The

parking lot of Penn State inDelaware County will feel thepress of the spectators, thepungent odor of tires and exhaust,and the squeal of tires as theRiesentoters descend on the campusfor at least four autocrosses!

I hope you're excited. Let's makethis the best year for Riesentoter.

Next Meeting: Bertil Roos Lisa Lutz Confer

Well, it's the beginning of a newyear with a new Exec Committee,and as Vice-President, I'm lookingforward to providing interestingmeeting programs. The regularmonthly meetings will be held onthe last Wednesday at 8:00 pm atthe Valley Forge Hilton. This ison Route 202 in King of Prussia,just north of the turnpike andexpressway interchanges. If youhave any suggestions for meetingprograms, please drop me a shortnote or give me a call.

Our speaker on January 25th will beBertil Roos, who has a long andextensive, multi-faceted racinghistory. He began racing in aFormula Vee, built by himself, in1967. He has won a total of sixmajor championships, having racedin sixteen countries. He has

competed in rallyes, ice racers.Formula Vees and Fords, Super Vees,Formula 2&3, Sports Racers, Can-Am,Formula Atlantic, Formula 5000,Formula 1 and Indy. He alsodesigned and built the ScandiaFormula cars.

He designed the Slide Car, forteaching avoidance techniques andcontrol of skidding. He developedmany patents worldwide as aresult. He was appointed to theNational Research Council -Transportation Research Board in198A, primarily as a result of hisinnovative teaching methods suchas "Ocular Driving Tactics".Bertil is also involved in car

construction and is well known for

his ability to set-up a chassisfor many drivers and teams.

In 1976, he started the BertilRoos School of Motor Racing atPocono International Raceway, and2-day courses range from WinterDriving to Grand Prix Racing.

This month's DER GASSER will land

on the doorsteps of a few memberswhere delivery has sometimes beeninterrupted. Many apologies tothose who have had intermittent

delivery. Now that we have themembership list on computer, alldues paying members should enjoycontinuous receipt of the monthlymagazine.

The computerization of the memberlist allows us many benefits. Forone thing, mailings can be moreeasily accomplished. For another,we can make use of information on

file to help other members. Forexample, should someone out therewith say, a 356B needs help with arestoration question, he or sheonly needs to call me and ask fora list of fellow 356B owners.

Clearly, this benefit is enhancedby having current updates from themembership. Please send me youraddress and phone number changes.Also, please let me know aboutchanges in your cars, so that ourrecords can be kept up to date.My address and phone numbers arelisted on page 19.

Exec Committee Minutes Submitted by Vem Lyle

The joint meeting of the 88 and 89Executive Committes was held on

December 18 at the home of Bob

Russo. In attendance were Debbie

Cooper, Lisa Lutz Confer, BetsiLeidy, Sybil Margaritis, PaulJohnston, Skip Corey, Art Rothe,Tony Bonnani, Bob Patton, RexCarle, Bob Russo and Vem Lyle.

Betsi, our 88 autocross chairmannoticed right away that it willtake two men to do her job fornext year, so we knew we were offto a good start.

Bob opened by pointing out thatthere was no intention of making aseparation between the old and thenew in our club, and emphasizedthat we should all just have fun.An Executive head table for the

meetings was decided upon, so thatall members could find us if theyneeded us.

Various sites for the generalmeeting were discussed with pricesranging from zero for a place thatmay be too small to $175 a nightfor most others. We decided to

take a larger and more centrallylocated place with the addedbenefit of a contract for the

entire year. Except for specialevents, meetings will be held atthe Valley Forge Hilton on Route202 in King of Prussia, on thelast Wednesday of each month.

Confirmed as the speaker for theJanuary meeting is Bertil Roos.Future possibilities include TomHessert, Bob Aiken and Bill"Murph" Mayberry. Other meetingsplanned; Vendor's Nite, the SpringSocial, the Oktoberfest, includingthe auction, and the Tech Quiz.The Tech Roundtable will probablynot be held, due to low turnoutlast year.

RTR track dates on the schedule:Mid Ohio April 22-23; Watkins GlenJuly 22-23; Siimmit Point, August5-6. Required instructor trainingsessions are a possibility.

At least four autocrosses will beheld at the Penn State campus inDelaware County. John Heckman, ofthe Chase and Heckman Insurance Co.has pledged continued financialsupport for our series. There isa possibility of opening some ofthe events to other clubs.

A "new members table" will be usedat the meetings so that they canall find the Membership Chairmanand we can all find them.

Debbie Cooper was reappointed asour club Historian. Betsi Leidywas appointed to the new positionof Parliamentarian, to ensure thatRobert's Rules are followed, andalso to oversee a review andrewrite of the club's bylaws.

Absentee ballots for the electionswere discussed and tabled.

The Club's financial books from 88

will be audited as per the bylaws.

A budget will be drawn up at thenext Exec meeting and each eventwill have a budget as well.

It was suggested that the AnnualAwards be better promoted and thataward winners should write their

comments for DER 6ASSER.

Advertising rates for DER GASSERwere felt to be in the ballparkfor a publication of this size. Alarge number of our advertisershave been delinquent for up to twoyears and it was decided thattheir ads would no longer bepublished until payment is made.

RTR Wins Porsche/Corvette Challenge

November 20 - The day dawned wet.The day dawned cold. Would anybodyshow up to autocross in this kindof weather? Experience told methe Corvettes would. Their series

out in Hershey goes right intoDecember, and on a cold winter'sday I've seen cars turn out likeit was the middle of spring. Nowdon't get offended, but I wasn'tso sure about Riesentoter. Our

autocross program has growntremendously the last few years,but when it comes to HARD-CORE

autocrossers, I thought the Vettepeople had it in the bag. Afterall, I'd already exposed theRiesentoter autocrosssrs to 102

degrees at Event #4, and now Iwanted you to come out in the coldand rain. Yeah, right.

RIGHTI THIRTY-SIX Riesentoters,driving 30 Porsches, showed up tototally overwhelm the Corvetteswho could only muster 16 driversin twelve cars. Not to getsentimental, but I was very proudto be a Riesentoter on that day.It meant a lot to see so many ofyou who care enough about your carand your club to come out anddrive despite the horrendousweather. And drive you did! Wedrove away with 9 out of 12 firstplace trophies, 7 seconds and a lotmore. Lisa Carle and Vern Lyle,both in 911s, also took Ladies andMen's FTD.

Although the quantity of Corvetteswas lacking, the quality of thedrivers definitely was not. Allthose trophies that Riesentoterwon were not easy victories. Thecomplete results are in thisissue, so you can see for yourselfthe close margin of victory insome of the classes. So, when allwas said and done, we simply (?)outdrove them.

A note about how points wereawarded for our series since this

event had separate Ladies and noNovice classes. After the trophypresentation, all Porsches werereclassed into our regular classesand points awarded accordingly.

88 RTR Autocross Champions

The 1988 autocross season is

history. I really enjoyed beingautocross chairman this year and Ithink we had a successful program,with 85 drivers participating.Thanks to everyone for yoursupport, it was very gratifying.There are a few people who wentabove and beyond the call of dutyand I'd like to acknowledge theircontributions. First of all, abig thank you to John Heckman.John was not only an enthusiasticparticipant, but his company.Chase and Heckman Insurance,generously sponsored the series,allowing Riesentoter to providesuch "necessities" as cold soda

and the Infamous John's John!

Also thanks to the unofficial

autocross committee: Dick, Connieand Richard Sweigart, Vern Lyle,Bob Russo, Lisa Lutz Confer, BobPatton and the tolerant pylondeliveryman, Doug Leidy.

The competition was tough, and allthe winners drove exceptionallywell. At the Banquet the classchampions were presented withRiesentoter jackets and a smalltrophy to impress their friends.

awarded. This has been given every

year since 72 when Bill Schmidtdonated his definitely severedcrank from his much-autocrossed

"stock" 912. This year's winner,Lisa Carle, drove a beautiful red911 and started the season about

15 seconds off the pace, but soonwas turning some very competitivetimes. It was a frustrating yearfor Lisa, though, since running asa novice, her times were indexedand the fastest time doesn't

necessarily take home a trophy.She persevered, capping the seasonby taking Ladies FTD at thePorsche/Corvette Challenge. Of the40 novice drivers who competed thisyear, the most improved, and winnerof the Broken Crankshaft Award,Lisa Carle. Congratulations!

Rainy Day Man vem Lyie Wet Speed

People have often asked me whyeverybody's autocross times in therain are closer together than theynormally are, and I think theanswer is because everyone isessentially driving the same way.

Rain is a great equalizer becausethe proper techniques of earlyapexing, brake in a straight line,accelerate only when the car isgoing straight, etc, are what mostpeople do in the dry. While thesethings are generally the wrongthings to do in an autocross, mostpeople don't have to change theirstyle in the rain. They do slowdown because "it's slippery", andsince they don't slide around alot, they figure that they'redoing the right thing. Well, theyare, they just have to do itfaster. The quicker driversforego their normal lines andtechniques and change to the rainmode, which is what everyone elseis doing. But they try to pushthe limit and THEY are the ones

who slide aroiind.

To win in the rain you have to goas fast as you can, and the trickis finding out how just how fastthat is. Surprise, surprise, it'sthe same in the dry! The limit inthe wet is just a little lower.

Thus, autocrossing in the rain isan excellent way to get to knowthe limits of tire adhesion, andleam something about vehicledynamics, because the results ofall your inputs as a driver aregreatly exaggerated. If you payattention, you can leam a lotabout the all-important drivingconcept of smoothness - and it isabsolutely essential in the rain.

HroROPLAMIHG AT SPKED (Bob Whiteat a recent Tech Seminar, in RMRPORSCHE). The massive drop-off inwet traction called hydroplaningis certainly affected by yourtires' design, but it has verylittle to do with the depth of thewater on the road. Instead, thereis a precise relationship existingbetween hydroplaning and pressurein the tire. Simply put, thespeed at which hydroplaning willoccur is equal to ten times thesquare root of the tire pressure.As an example, if your tires areat 36psi, hydroplaning will occurat 60mph; raising the pressure to49psi will delay the onset of thehydroplaning to 70mph; while goingto a rock-hard 64psi should allowyou to reach SOmph before hydroplaning occurs. You leam somethingevery day!

(Ed. Note: Well, I don't know. Isthis info of any real value, or isit only of theoretical concem? Ifyou put 49 psi in the wide tirescommonly used on Porsches, you mostlikely would destroy your overallhandling to the point that youwouldn't want to increase yourspeed, hydroplaning or not.

This could be telling you that youshould increase your tire pressureat an autocross in the rain - but

only to reduce hydroplaning, andagain, you would be using the tireoutside its best pressure range,and you might loose precious timeeverywhere else. Or it could betelling you that you don't want todecrease pressure in the rain, somaybe it has some value after all.

Remember that tire design has alot to do with this, so as in mostother things, it depends. Testingis the only way to know how yoursetup responds. Nuff said.)

Lisa Carle was an excellent choice

for the Broken Crankshaft Award,given to the most improved noviceautocrosser. She worked hard and

the award was very well deserved.

The High Speed Driver Award, givento the track driver who showed the

most improvement, was won by DaveDonohue, a novice at the start ofthe season, but not any longer.

The Mighty Nitto Award, for "Makingthe Best of a Bad Situation", wentto Don Galbraith who lunched his

motor at a track event at Mid-Ohio,then called a friend to drive his

other car out to Nelson Ledges tocomplete the weekend.

The Tattered Helmet Award, for theperson who manages to distinguishhimself in some less-than-gloriousmanner, was a shoo-in for BillCooper. Bill made what some peoplehave called the longest distanceoff-track excursion ever seen at

Summit Point - in the session where

he was being checked out as aninstructor. No damage to Bill, butthe car suffered, and several fairsized trees gave their lives tokeep him from going even farther.

The winner of the Riesentoter Award

is chosen by the most recentrecipient, the President, and amember at large. This is a veryprestigious award given to theperson goes out of his way toperform meritorious service to theclub, and who best embodies the"Spirit of Riesentoter". Thisyear the award was given to A1Anderson for his continuing workon the Executive Committee under

difficult circumstances,

Technical Tidbits

911 Brake Warning Light (by RayCalvo in RUNDSCHAU). After padreplacement, bleeding of brakes,or replacement of master cylinderon 68-76 models, you may have toreset the brake warning light onthe dash. The system is reset bypressing a button on the inside ofthe master cylinder. (Ed. note: Ibelieve it's side, not inside.)What is not stated in the shopmanual is that the light will goout only when the engine isstarted. You can press the buttontil doomsday with the engine offand the light will remain on.

914 Fuel Pump Relay (by Joe Reidin PORSCHEFORUS). Two 914s werebrought to my attention recentlywhich had been running well andthen just quit. They would cranknormally, but not restart. In bothcases, corroded contacts on thefuel piimp relay were responsible.They were easily fixed by cleaningthe relay pins with an ink eraser(for non-erasible ink), and byspreading the split pins with arazor blade.

This malady can be diagnosed bylistening for the fuel pump as thekey is turned to the "On" position(not to "Start"). It should runfor half a second then stop. Eachtime you turn the key off, thenon, the pump should run again, butonly for half a second. If itdoesn't run at all, try this.Turn the key on, pull the heatercontrol all the way up and theblower should run. From the relaypanel just below the engine lidhinge on the driver's side, removeone relay at a time until the fanstops. Substitute this good relayfor the rear-most relay on the farleft side of the board and thefuel pump should run.

Recently while working on a 911Carrera I noticed that the four 6mm

bolts that hold the air flow meter

to the air filter housing wereloose. I found that the bolts had

not been "loctited" as they are onother models. Since noticing this,every 84-on Carrera in the shophas been found with loose bolts.

If conditions are right and youhave this problem, you can findyourself with severe engine damage.

If you do this repair yourself, werecommend the red form of Loctite.

FUEL SYSTEMS (A1 Collins in DERVORGANGER). Everybody knows thatthey should change their fuelfilter to keep the injectionsystem clean, but do they alsorealize that it helps to keepwater out of the sensitive fuel

distributor and the injectornozzles? These items are made of

steel and cast iron that will

quickly rust and plug up thesystem if they come in contactwith water. Some alcohol gasadditive used infrequently willalso greatly help with the waterproblem. A pint used once everysix tanks of gas in the summer andevery four tanks in the winterwill be sufficient.

911 Oil Drain Plugs (by Wade Millerin RUNDSCHAU), Did you ever thinRabout how your drain plug shouldbe oriented? The magnetic drainplug screws into a hole near theoutside of a round plate that isbolted to the engine. The platecan be mounted with the plug inone of 8 directions. One of the

directions, namely when the plugis pointed to the right side ofthe car, has the plug directlyunder the oil pickup tube. Noneof the manuals are specific onthis, however one picture showedthe plug aligned with the enginecase, i.e. the plug was pointed tothe rear of the engine, I assumedthis was the correct position anddrove my car this way for manytrouble-free miles. After some

recent engine work (at 104,000),my engine was returned with thedrain plug under the pickup tube,so now I thought that this was thecorrect position. However, theoil pressure seemed a little low,so I investigated and found thatthere is near perfect alignmentbetween the hole and the pickuptube when the plug points to theright side of the engine. Andfurthermore, the clearances aresuch that the plug actually entersthe end of the tube! In my case,it had even bent the pickup tubeslightly. I now have the plugback in the old direction, pointedto the rear of the car.

IGNITION SYSTEMS (A1 Collins inDER VORGANGER. Many times thespark plugs are replaced when allthey needed was to be cleaned byglass beading and regapped. Theamount of erosion on the tip ofthe electrodes is the determiningfactor. Plug connectors and wiresshould be checked for resistance

to see if they have become open.

The points should be replaced ifthe rubbing block is worn, contactsurfaces are badly pitted, or ifthe spring has become too weak.Ignition timing is set at idle andhigh often

distributor midrange advance isnot checked. Most people drivetheir cars in the 3000-4000 rpmrange, so the timing should beexactly correct in that range.Also, the advance mechanism shouldbe lubricated.

Top Only Goncours

The game is essentially, who hasthe cleanest car, but it goes alittle beyond that. GoncoursPorsches don't happen - they aremade. You really are trying toaccomplish 3 things, 1) to makeyour Porsche look impressive outthere on the site, 2) to score ashigh as possible with the judgesand 3) as a benefit you will atleast partially restore parts ofthe car that usually are neglected.

It is important to remember thatthis is competition and the judgesare trying to separate the winnerfrom everyone else. The judgeexpects that everything he can seewill be spotless, if not you loosebig points right away. He musttry to find out where youneglected to clean. So the ruleis to clean whatever you cantouch. You still want to play?Read on.

Most beginners spend the first tenhours waxing the car and 5 minutesor none vacuuming the tr\mk orcleaning the engine and seats,etc. You must spread out yourtime and efforts equally over thefour areas to be judged - engine,interior, exterior and the trunk.Start with the interior since it's

rather easy and we don't want todiscourage anyone right away.

Remove both seats, all rubber matsand anything else that is loose.With vacuum in one hand and

toothbrush in the other, coverevery square inch of the floor,carpets, side pockets, trim, etc.

Don't forget under the seattracks. Vacuum the seats, thensaddle soap them thoroughly.Clean all rubber and go lightly onthe ArmorAll treatment. Lie under

the dash and clean everything -remember that dust would have

fallen on the other side of

everything you're looking at.Clean the ash tray and empty theglove box of anything that was notin there when the car was new.

The triink always seems to be themost neglected and this is yourchance to pick up some points onyour competition. Dismantle itcompletely and do the vacuum andtoothbrush routine. Repaint whereneeded, clean the latch, tool kit,spare, fluid reservoirs, etc.Don't forget the contraband well,you'd be surprised what can growin there.

Now if you can stand up again,wash and clean the exterior paintwith something like Dupont 7 orColor Back, then use a paste wax.Remove wax from all trim with a

soft toothbrush. Make it spotlessin the door jambs, and under thelids. Clean the inside of anydirty lenses.

You should have Gunked the engineas you washed the car, so nowremove the air cleaner for

separate cleaning and waxing.With a coffee can of mineral

spirits and a toothbrush, cleaneverything. Don't forget thelatch, behind the engine and thewalls of the compartment. Somepeople have been known to removethe engine to make this easier.If you're serious about winning...

Well, now that your wife hates youand your hands will never be thesame, you are finished with theBARE MININUM. Save some time to

evaluate your job. Think like ajudge and look at each area ofyour car as if it belonged to theguy who is trying to beat you. Goto extremes to find any dirt thatwas missed. Judges are notnecessarily devious, but they canusually find a handful of dirt onany car that most of us would callspotless. At the show, watch themwork on as many cars as you canand you'll leam something. It'susually too late to run back andclean something you've seen themcheck, but you'll know for thenext time.

We may have a "concours-prepschool" some Saturday in thespring to add to this basic info.Let us know if you areinterested. We WILL have a

concours at the annual picnic, soif you start now, you may be ready.

Incidentally, at a full-blownconcours such as the Parade, theydo all this to the BOTTOM of the

car, too. Talk about a seriousillness!

Clean up your act

OK, let's start with the interior.Clean leather with Lexol-nf, a non-greasy preservative. Clean vinylwith a capful of P-21S Car Washand water, or Sonax InteriorCockpit Cleaner and buff dry. Tryto pound on the seat bottoms andvacuum with a brush to loosen sandand grit. Remove any carpet thatyou can, and vacutim carefully; 911and 914 mats can be beaten againstan "anchor" fence to remove alltrapped sand; 356s, clean and treatrubber mats. P-21S Car Wash works

best and it also removes oxidationand makes them jet black. Cleanfloor covering under the mats;sand behind the gas pedal is acommon concours fault. Clean out

map pockets and glove box. Leaveonly the owner' s manual in theglove box. Clean interior mirrorsand visors, wipe out door jambsand lightly wax them.

For the exterior, clean the bodyonly when it is cool to the touch.Use P-21S Car Wash for rockers,bumper bellows and hard-to-reachsurfaces. Start with roof, glass,deck lid, then the sides, bumpersand rockers last. (It might be agood idea to clean the wheels andtires first, using separate pailto avoid brake dust contamination

of the body. P-21S can be diluted50/50 with water for cleaningnon-baked on road film.) Water inyour pail should contain a smallamount of detergent such as LiquidIvory, Cold Water Woolite, SonaxGlass Wash, or just a shot glassof P-21S Car Wash. Use a clean

sponge, or better yet, a hand-sizecotton towel. Towels work best for

drying the car - no synthetics -only 100 percent cotton. You caneven wipe off excess water withyour hand, then follow with twotowels, one slightly damp to avoidscratching.(John Paterek in PORSCHEFORUS)
