BEGINS DECEMBER 28TH, 2009

Some of the most treacherous waters in

the Southern Hemisphere lie between Syd-

ney and Hobart, a distance of 628 nautical

miles and nearly a week at sea. Those who

make the voyage are on a course to define

courage. From the individuals to the teams

themselves, the challenge must be faced

with grit and stoicism. Those who have

made the journey have been known to say

it moved their soul. Facing 60-knot winds

and towering seas how could it not?

There is an elegance that comes with sai-

ling, which is nearly impossible to see in

difficult, harsh conditions. But along the

Sardinian coastline, the scene is quite dif-

ferent. Here, the Worlds most graceful and

powerful yachts cut through the Mediterra-

nean with agility, refinement and ease. Per-

fect sailing conditions and crew coordina-

tion are crucial to the way these imposing

boats glide along. An entire team reacting

as one is maritime choreography at its fi-

Smeralda, the World famous Maxi Yacht

TRIPLOCK WINDING CROWN

To protect the movement from invasive

elements such as water and dust, Rolex

invented and patented the Triplock win-

ding crown. Professional models equipped

with this ingenious triple-seal system, like

the Yacht-Master II, are waterproof to 300

metres (1000 feet). The Triplock consists

of 10 separate elements crafted from 18ct

gold for the crown and special polymers

for the gaskets. Once assembled, it screws

down on to the Oyster case as tightly and

securely as a submarine hatch.

4160 MOVEMENT

A perfect start is key to a successful race. In

order to eliminate as much margin for error

as humanly possible, Rolex equipped the

Yacht-Master II with the 4160 Movement,

the product of three years and 35,000 de-

velopment hours. The countdown function

of the movement not only permits the pro-

gramming, but also the resetting of the

countdown for a second time in the event

of an accidentally imprecise first setting.

RING COMMAND BEZEL

It takes genius to make the complex simple. Rolex achie-

ved perfection when it turned its attention to redefining

the pupose and functionnality of the bezel. Typically, a

bezel operates independently from the internal mecha-

nism, however, the Ring Command bezel in the Yacht-Mas-

ter II regatta chronograph operates in conjunction with it.

Now a mechanical component that is linked to the move-

ment, the bezel literally acts as the key to the program-

mable countdown, allowing it to be set and synchronised

to the sequence of race start times. Complex in design, but

simple in use, it is functionally beautiful.
