History

HANS WILSDORF

The history of Rolex is inextricably linkedto the visionary spirit of Hans Wilsdorf, its founder. The young man entered theworld of Swiss watchmaking in the early20th century, at a time when the pocketwatch was the order of the day. Hebegan to dream of a watch worn on thewrist. Wristwatches were not veryprecise at the time, but Hans Wilsdorf foresaw that they could become bothelegant and reliable. To convince the

public of the reliability of his resolutelyinnovative timepieces, he equippedthem with small, very precisemovements manufactured by a Swisswatchmaking company in Bienne.

In 1905 Hans Wilsdorf and hisbrother-in-law Alfred Davis founded"Wilsdorf and Davis" in London.[8]Their main business at the time wasimporting Hermann Aegler's Swissmovements to England and placingthem in quality watch cases madeby Dennison and othersThe earliest watches from Wilsdorf

and Davis were usually hallmarked"W&D" inside the caseback.

In 1908 Wilsdorf registered thetrademark "Rolex" and opened anoffice in La Chaux-de-Fonds,Switzerland.[The company name"Rolex" was registered on 15November 1915.

In 1919 Wilsdorf moved the company toGeneva, Switzerland where it was establishedas the Rolex Watch Company. Its name waslater changed to Montres Rolex, SA and finallyRolex, SA. The company moved out of theUnited Kingdom because taxes and exportduties on the silver and gold used for thewatch cases were driving costs too high.

Upon the death of his wife in 1944,Wilsdorf established the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation in which he left all of his Rolexshares, making sure that some of thecompany's income would go to charity. Thecompany is still owned by a private trust andshares are not traded on any stock exchange.

THE SELF-WINDINGMOVEMENT

The first self-winding Rolexwristwatch was offered to the publicin 1931, preceded to the market byHarwood which patented the designin 1923 and produced the first self-winding watch in 1928, powered byan internal mechanism that used themovement of the wearer's arm. Thisnot only made watch-windingunnecessary, but kept the powerfrom the mainspring moreconsistent resulting in more reliabletime keeping.

Innovations

Quartz movementsRolex participated in the development of the original quartz watch movements.Although Rolex has made very few quartzmodels for its Oyster line, the company'sengineers were instrumental in design andimplementation of the technology duringthe late 1960s and early 1970s.In 1968,Rolex collaborated with a consortium of 16Swiss watch manufacturers to develop theBeta 21 quartz movement used in their

Rolex Quartz Date 5100. Within about fiveyears of research, design, anddevelopment, Rolex created the "clean-slate" 5035/5055 movement that wouldeventually power the Rolex Oyster quartz .

THE QUES T FOR

CHRONOME TRIC

PRECISION

Rolex first concentrated on the quality of themovements. The relentless quest for chronometricprecision rapidly led to success. In 1910, a Rolexwatch was the first wristwatch in the world to receivethe Swiss Certificate of Precision, granted by theOfficial Watch Rating Centre in Bienne.Four years later, in 1914, Kew Observatory in GreatBritain awarded a Rolex wristwatch a class Aprecision certificate, a distinction which until thatpoint in time had been reserved exclusively formarine chronometers. From that date forward, theRolex wristwatch was synonymous with precision.

Rolex is the largest manufacturer of Swiss madecertified chronometers. In 2005 more than half theannual production of COSC certified watches wereRolexes. To date, Rolex still holds the record for themost certified chronometer movements in the

category of wristwatches.

Rolex was also the first watch company tocreate a wristwatch water resistant to 100 m(330 ft). Wilsdorf even had a specially madeRolex watch attached to the side of the Triestebathyscaphe, which went to the bottom of the

Mariana Trench. The watch survived and tested as having kept perfect time during itsdescent and ascent. This was confirmed by atelegram sent to Rolex the following day saying "Am happy to confirm that even at 11,000 meters your watch is as precise as onthe surface. Best regards, Jacques Piccard".

PROFESSIONAL

WA TCHES

In the early 1950s, thanks to the perfect mastery of chronometric precision and water resistance,Rolex developed professional watches that served as tools and whose functions went far beyond simply telling the time. These watcheswere intended for new professional activities, such as deep-sea diving, aviation, mountainclimbing and scientific exploration. Launched in1953, the Submariner was the first watch guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres(330 feet). These watches generated lasting enthusiasmand became known as the watches of achievers.

ROLEX WATCHMAKING

THE PARACHROM

HAIRSPRING

A watch is only as precise as itsoscillator is regular.Conventional oscillator hairsprings are made of ferromagnetic alloys, leavingthem vulnerable to magnetic fields and shocks. After five years of research, Rolex created the blue Parachrom hairspring.Crafted from a paramagnetic alloy, it is unaffected by magnetic fields and up to 10times more resistant to shocks.Historically, the unique bluecolour of the hairspring has beena sign of prestige reserved for only the most accuratetimepieces. Today, it guarantees

the accuracy of your Rolex.

ROLEX WATCHMAKING

THE CERAMIC BEZEL

The bezel of a watch can deteriorate whenexposed to sunlight or scratches. This motivatedRolex to create a special bezel with a Cerachromdisc. Fashioned from extremely hard ceramicmaterial, it has excellent corrosion-resistantproperties, its colour remains unaffected byultraviolet rays and it is virtually scratch-proof. Toinscribe numerals on this hardest of materials,Rolex further developed and patented a uniqueprocess. The numerals and graduations are carvedbefore the ceramic hardens; the Cerachrom disc isthen covered with either yellow gold or platinum, atom by atom, and polished until only theprecious metal in the numerals and graduationsremains, permanently. It takes 40 hours toproduce a ceramic bezel.

904 L S TEEL

Rolex uses 904L steel for its steel watch cases. 904L is usually reserved for the chemical industry, where maximum resistanceagainst corrosion is essential. 904Lmarries perfectly with the other precious metals used by Rolex. Asuper alloy, 904L is extremely resistant and highly polishable .

EXPLORE THE ROLEX COLLECTION

Rolex produced specific models suitable for the extremes of deep-seadiving, mountain climbing and aviation. Early sports modelsincluded the Rolex Submariner and the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date

Sea Dweller. The latter watch has a helium release valve, co-invented with Swiss watchmaker Doxa, to release helium gas build-up during decompression. The Explorer and Explorer II weredeveloped specifically for explorers who would navigate roughterrain, such as the world famous Mount Everest expeditions. Themost iconic model is the Rolex GMT Master, which was originally developed in 1954 at the request of Pan Am Airways to assist its

pilots with the problem of crossing multiple time zones when ontranscontinental flights (GMT standing for Greenwich Mean Time).
