Chapter 1: Introduction

1.1 Overview of the product

The MSI US54EX USB Wireless Adapter gives you the flexibility to install your PC or notebook PC in the most convenient location available, without the cost of running the network cables.

Its auto-sensing capability allows high packet transfer up to 54Mbps for maximum throughput, or dynamic range shifting to lower speeds due to distance or operating limitations in an environment with a lot of electromagnetic interference. It can also interoperate with all 11Mbps wireless (802.11b) products. Your wireless communications are protected by up to 128-bit WEP and WPA encryption, so your data stays secure.

1.3 LED Status

The LED on the top of this card indicates Link/Act status. It blinks at green light when sending and receiving data.

Chapter 2: Installation Guide

2.1 Software Installation

2.1.1 Overview

The Adapter’s Setup Wizard will guide you through the installation procedure for Windows 98SE, Me, 2000, XP32, XP64, Vista32, and Vista64. The Setup Wizard will guide you install the Utility and drivers.

If you install the hardware before the software, you will be prompted “Found New Hardware Wizard”, click the Cancel button, and run the Setup Wizard program on the CD-ROM.

The Setup steps for Windows 98SE, Me, 2000 and XP are very similar. The following setup steps are for windows 2000.

2.1.2 Software Installation for Windows 2000

1. Insert the Resource CD into your CD-ROM drive, click the Start button and choose Run. In the field that appears, enter F:\Setup.exe (if “F” is the letter of your CD-ROM drive), figure 2-1 should then appear.

2. You can click the Cancel button to end the installation on the Preparing Setup screen, figure 2-1. Otherwise, the Setup Wizard will display a screen similar to that shown in figure 2-2 after a moment.

3. To continue, click the Next button on the screen, figure 2-2. Click the Cancel button to end the Installation.

4. Click Browse to change the destination location for the software in figure 2-3. Click Next to continue the Installation. Click Back to return to the previous page, or click Cancel to end the Installation.

5. While files are copying, you will see a warning box shown in figure 2-4. Please select YES to continue installation. Our drivers have been tested thoroughly, and are able to work with the operating system.

6. After the files have been successfully copied, the screen in figure 2-5 will appear. Click the Finish button to finish the wizard.

7. After installing the software, Please plug the adapter into your PC. If you need instructions as to how to do this, please refer to section 2.2 Hardware Installation. If you have plugged it into you PC already, please un-plug it and plug it back in. The OS will automatically detect the adapter and automatically setup the driver for the adapter. If it does not, please follow the setup steps to finish the driver installation.

After installing the driver successfully, you should see an icon, or , appear in your system tray.

2.2 Hardware Installation

1. Connect one end of the USB cable to the Adapter.

2. Connect the other end of the USB cable to the USB port on your computer. Because the Adapter gets its power from the host, there is no external power supply. The LED should light up when the Adapter is plugged in and the PC is on.

2.3 Uninstall Software

2.3.1 Uninstall the driver software from your PC 1. On the Windows taskbar, click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click

Control Panel. 2. Double-click the System icon, click on the Hardware tab in the System window. 3. Click on the Device Manager button, double-click Network Adapters, and then

right-click US54EX USB Wireless Adapter.

4. Click Uninstall..., shown in above figure 2-6, the system will uninstall the driver software of the adapter from your PC.

2.3.2 Uninstall the utility software from your PC 1. On the Windows taskbar, click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click

Control Panel 2. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon, find the US54EX program from the

installed program list, highlight it and click the Remove button. 3. Following the Install Shield Wizard will uninstall the utility software from your PC.

Chapter 3: Configuration

MSI US54EX USB Wireless Adapter can be configured by its utility. This section describes how to configure your USB Wireless Adapter for wireless connectivity on your Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and use the data security encryption features.

After the Adapter's driver and utility has been installed, the adapter’s tray icon, or

, will appear in your system tray. It means the utility is running on your system. If the utility does not run, you can run the utility by clicking: Start> Program> MSI> US54EX> MSI US54EX Wireless Client Utility. If the icon still does not appear, the driver or utility may be installed incorrectly or the adapter is unplugged, please try again.

Icon means the connection has been established. Icon means there is no connection.

Double-click the icon and the configuration screen of the utility will appear. You can

also run the utility by clicking: Start> Program> MSI> US54EX> MSI US54EX Wireless Client Utility. The utility provides a complete and easy to use set of tools to:

Display current status information Edit and add configured profiles Display current diagnostics information

The section below introduces these above capabilities.

Note: If your OS is Windows XP, you can use Windows XP to configure the wireless network settings. (To use this function, you must upgrade the OS with sp1).

If you want to use Windows XP to configure wireless network settings, just exit the utility.

Right-click the icon at the bottom of the screen, and click Exit to exit the utility.

3.1 Profile

Click the Profile tab of the utility and the Profile screen will appear, figure 3-1. The Profile screen provides tools to:

To create a new profile, click the Add button on the Profile tab, the Profile configuration screen will appear as shown in figure 3-2.

To edit a profile, highlight the desired profile name on Profile Name list, and click the Edit button, the Profile configuration screen will appear shown in figure 3-1.

To delete a profile, highlight the desired profile name on Profile Name list, and click the Delete button.

To switch to another profile, highlight the desired profile name on Profile Name list, and click the Activate button.

Note: Do not forget to click the Apply button when you create a new profile for connection.

3.1.1 Add or Edit a Configuration Profile

To add a new configuration profile, click Add button on the Profile Management tab. To modify a configuration profile, select the configuration from the Profile list and click Edit.

The Profile Management dialog box will display a screen similar to that shown in Figure 3-2.

Profile Name - Identifies the configuration profile. This name must be unique. Profile names are not case-sensitive.

SSID - The IEEE 802.11 wireless network name. This field has a maximum limit of 32 characters.

PSW(Power Save Mode) • CAM(Constantly Awake Mode) - Continuous Access Mode. • PSW(Power Saving Mode) - Power Saving mode.

Network Type - Displays the wireless mode, either Ad-hoc or Infrastructure mode Preamble - Specifies the preamble setting in 802.11b. The default setting is Auto

Switch (access point mode), which allows both short and long headers in the 802.11b frames. The adapter can only use short radio headers if the access point supports and uses them.

RTS Threshold - Default is 2312. Fragment Threshold - Default is 2312. Ad-hoc mode - Displays the wireless mode, either Only 802.11B or 802.11B/G

mode. Channel - Shows the current channel in use. This field determines which operating

frequency will be used.

Authentication Type - Three options, Open System, Shared-Key System or LEAP. 802.1x Setting - It enables when Authentication Type is setting to WPA. Encryption - Displays which encryption type that the driver is using. When you

select Open System, Shared-Key System as Network Authentication, there are two options: WEP and Disabled. If you select WPA-PSK as Network Authentication, there are TKIP and AES options instead of WEP and Disabled.

Wep Key - Key #1, Key #2, Key #3, Key #4, the Key groups. You can enter 10 hexadecimal digits (any combination of 0-9, a-f, A-F) or 5 ASCII characters for 64-bit (also called 40bits) encryption. You can enter 26 hexadecimal digits (any combination of 0-9, a-f, A-F) or 13 ASCII characters for 128-bit (also called 104bits) encryption.

3.2 Link Status

The Link Status tab displays the adapter's current status.

The following table describes the items found on the Network Status screen. Status - Shows whether the station is connected to the wireless network, if not

connected, display RF is closed; if connected, display AP name and BSSID. Extra Info - Shows link status and the current channel in use. Link Speed - Shows the current max Transfer rate, unit is Mbit/sec. Throughput - Displays Tx and Rx rate, unit is Kbits/sec. Link Quality - Shows the quality of the signal. Signal Strength - Shows the strength of the signal.

3.3 Site Survey

Click the Site Survey tab of the Utility and the Site Survey screen will appear, figure 3-5. On the Site Survey screen you can scan the Available Infrastructure and Ad Hoc Networks.

Click the Rescan button to refresh the list at any time. Highlight an SSID and click the Connect button to connect to an available network.

3.4 Statistics

The Statistics tab shows receiving and transmitting statistical information for the following receive and transmit diagnostics for frames received by or transmitted to the wireless network adapter. Click the Reset Counter button to reset the count of the statistics information.

3.5 Advanced

On this Screen, you can configure the WEP key or view the configured WEP key.

Wireless mode - Displays the wireless mode, either 802.11B/G mix or 802.11B only.

B/S Protection - There are three options: either Auto or Enable, or Close. TxRate - Shows the current Transfer rate. TxBURST - It can translate more data when it enable. Fast Roaming at - Roaming will disable when Transmit Power is below some dBm. Turn off RF - The wireless radio of this adapter can be enabled or disabled. You

can turn the wireless radio off by selecting the check-box. Apply - Click the Apply button to save the current setting.

3.6 About

This screen displays some information about this adapter, including Driver Date, Driver Version, Utility Date, Utility Version, MAC Address, IP Address, SubMask, Power Save mode and Preamble.

Utility Version - The version of this utility. Utility Date - The creation date of this utility. Driver Version - The version of the wireless network adapter driver. Driver Date - The creation date of the wireless network adapter driver. EEPROM Version - The version of this EEPROM. IP Address - The IP address of the wireless network. Phy_Address - The MAC address of the wireless network adapter. SubMask - The subnet mask of the wireless network. Default Gateway - The default gateway of the wireless network.

3.7 An example for application

Suppose you have an installed and using AP, the SSID is MSI and it adopts 64-bit encryption with the key 0123456789. To establish a connection with this AP, you should follow these steps below:

1. Launch US54EX Wireless Utility. 2. Click the Profile tab of the utility and click the New button on the screen that

appears. 3. The Profile configuration screen will appear, please enter Test for the Profile Name,

MSI for the SSID, select Infrastructure for the Network Mode, select WEP for the Data Encryption and enter 0123456789 for Network key.

4. Click OK to save this profile. 5. Click Apply on the Profile screen. The utility will establish a connection with this AP

by configured profile.

Appendix B: Glossary

802.11b - The 802.11b standard specifies a wireless networking at 11 Mbps using direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DSSS) technology and operating in the unlicensed radio spectrum at 2.4GHz, and WEP encryption for security. 802.11b networks are also referred to as Wi-Fi networks.

802.11g - specification for wireless networking at 54 Mbps using direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DSSS) technology, using OFDM modulation and operating in the unlicensed radio spectrum at 2.4GHz, and backward compatibility with IEEE 802.11b devices, and WEP encryption for security.

Ad-hoc Network - An ad-hoc network is a group of computers, each with a wireless adapter, connected as an independent 802.11 wireless LAN. Ad-hoc wireless computers operate on a peer-to-peer basis, communicating directly with each other without the use of an access point. Ad-hoc mode is also referred to as an Independent Basic Service Set (IBSS) or as peer-to-peer mode, and is useful at a departmental scale or SOHO operation.

DSSS (Direct-Sequence Spread Spectrum) - DSSS generates a redundant bit pattern for all data transmitted. This bit pattern is called a chip (or chipping code). Even if one or more bits in the chip are damaged during transmission, statistical techniques embedded in the receiver can recover the original data without the need for retransmission. To an unintended receiver, DSSS appears as low power wideband noise and is rejected (ignored) by most narrowband receivers. However, to an intended receiver (i.e. another wireless LAN endpoint), the DSSS signal is recognized as the only valid signal, and interference is inherently rejected (ignored).

FHSS (Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum) - FHSS continuously changes (hops) the carrier frequency of a conventional carrier several times per second according to a pseudo-random set of channels. Because a fixed frequency is not used, and only the transmitter and receiver know the hop patterns, interception of FHSS is extremely difficult.

Infrastructure Network - An infrastructure network is a group of computers or other devices, each with a wireless adapter, connected as an 802.11 wireless LAN. In infrastructure mode, the wireless devices communicate with each other and to a wired network by first going through an access point. An infrastructure wireless network connected to a wired network is referred to as a Basic Service Set (BSS). A set of two or more BSS in a single network is referred to as an Extended Service Set (ESS). Infrastructure mode is useful at a corporation scale, or when it is necessary to connect the wired and wireless networks.

Spread Spectrum - Spread Spectrum technology is a wideband radio frequency technique developed by the military for use in reliable, secure, mission-critical communications systems. It is designed to trade off bandwidth efficiency for reliability,

integrity, and security. In other words, more bandwidth is consumed than in the case of narrowband transmission, but the trade off produces a signal that is, in effect, louder and thus easier to detect, provided that the receiver knows the parameters of the spread-spectrum signal being broadcast. If a receiver is not tuned to the right frequency, a spread-spectrum signal looks like background noise. There are two main alternatives, Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) and Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS).

SSID - A Service Set Identification is a thirty-two character (maximum) alphanumeric key identifying a wireless local area network. For the wireless devices in a network to communicate with each other, all devices must be configured with the same SSID. This is typically the configuration parameter for a wireless PC card. It corresponds to the ESSID in the wireless Access Point and to the wireless network name.

WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) - A data privacy mechanism based on a 64-bit or 128-bit or 152-bit shared key algorithm, as described in the IEEE 802.11 standard.

Wi-Fi - A trade name for the 802.11b wireless networking standard, given by the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA, see http://www.wi-fi.net), an industry standards group promoting interoperability among 802.11b devices.

WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) - A group of computers and associated devices communicate with each other wirelessly, which network serving users are limited in a local area.

WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) - A wireless security protocol use TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) encryption, which can be used in conjunction with a RADIUS server.

Kapitel 1: Einleitung

1.1 Überblick über das Produkt

Der MSI US54EX USB Wireless Adapter gibt Ihnen die Flexibilität, Ihren PC oder Ihr Notebook an dem für Sie günstigsten Ort aufzustellen, ohne Netzwerkkabel verlegen zu müssen.

Seine Auto-Sensing-Funktion ermöglicht die Übertragung von großen Datenpaketen bis zu maximal 54 Mbps, oder die dynamische Bereichsumschaltung auf niedrigere Geschwindigkeiten aufgrund der Entfernung oder betrieblicher Einschränkungen in Umgebungen mit hoher elektromagnetischer Interferenz. Er kann ebenso mit allen Wireless-Produkten bis 11 Mbps (802.11b) zusammen betrieben werden. Ihre drahtlose Kommunikation wird mit bis zu 128-bit WEP- und WPA- Verschlüsselung geschützt, so dass Ihre Daten gesichert bleiben.

Kapitel 2: Installationsanleitung

2.1 Software-Installation

2.1.1 Überblick

Der Setup Wizard des Adapters führt Sie durch den Installationsprozess für Windows 98SE, Me, 2000, XP32, XP64, Vista32, Vista64. Er führt Sie durch die Installation des Dienstprogramms und der Treiber.

Wenn Sie die Hardware vor der Software installieren, wird "Neue Hardware gefunden" angezeigt, klicken Sie auf Abbrechen und starten Sie das Setup-Programm von der CD-ROM.

Die Setup-Schritte für Windows 98SE, Me, 2000 and XP ähneln sich. Die folgenden Setup-Schritte sind für Windows 2000.

2.1.2 Softwareinstallation für Windows 2000

1. Legen Sie die Software-CD in Ihr CD-ROM-Laufwerk, klicken Sie auf Start und wählen Sie Ausführen. Geben Sie in die erscheinende Maske F:\Setup.exe ein (wenn “F” der Buchstabe Ihres CD-ROM-Laufwerks ist), daraufhin sollte Abbildung 2-1 erscheinen.

2. Um die Installation zu verlassen, können Sie im Setup-Vorbereitungsfenster auf Cancel klicken, Abbildung 2-1. Ansonsten zeigt der Setup Wizard nach einem Moment ein Fenster, das dem in Abbildung 2-2 ähnelt.

3. Um fortzufahren, klicken Sie im Fenster auf Next , Abbildung 2-2. Um die Installation abzubrechen, klicken Sie auf Cancel.

4. Klicken Sie im Fenster von Abbildung 2-3 auf Browse, um das Zielverzeichnis für die Software zu ändern. Klicken Sie auf Next, um mit der Installation fortzufahren. Klicken Sie auf Back, um zum vorherigen Fenster zurückzukehren, oder klicken Sie auf Cancel, um die Installation abzubrechen.

5. Während die Dateien kopiert werden, sehen Sie einen Warnhinweis, wie in Abbildung 2-4 dargestellt. Bitte wählen Sie YES, um mit der Installation fortzufahren. Unsere Treiber wurden gründlich getestet und sind in der Lage, mit dem Betriebssystem zusammenzuarbeiten.

6. Nachdem die Dateien erfolgreich kopiert wurden, erscheint das Fenster von Abbildung 2-5. Klicken Sie auf Finish, um den Wizard zu beenden.

7. Nach der Installation der Software verbinden Sie bitte den Adapter mit Ihrem PC. Wenn Sie dafür Hilfe benötigen, sehen Sie bitte in Abschnitt 2.2 Hardwareinstallation nach. Wenn Sie den Adapter bereits mit Ihrem PC verbunden haben, so entfernen Sie ihn bitte und verbinden ihn daraufhin erneut. Das Betriebssystem erkennt den Adapter und richtet den Treiber automatisch ein. Wenn dies nicht der Fall sein sollte, nehmen Sie bitte die Setup-Schritte vor, um die Treiberinstallation fertig zu stellen.

Nach erfolgreicher Treiberinstallation, sollten Sie das Symbol, oder , in Ihrem System Tray sehen.

2.2 Hardware-Installation

1. Verbinden Sie ein Ende des USB-Kabels mit dem Adapter.

2. Verbinden Sie das andere Ende des USB-Kabels mit dem USB-Port Ihres Computers. Da der Adapter vom PC mit Energie versorgt wird, gibt es keine externe Stromversorgung. Die LED sollte aufleuchten, wenn der Adapter verbunden und der PC eingeschaltet ist.

2.3 Deinstallieren der Software

2.3.1 Deinstallieren der Treibersoftware von Ihrem PC

1. Klicken Sie Start auf der Task-Leiste von Windows, wählen Sie Einstellungen und klicken Sie dann auf Systemeinstellungen.

2. Doppelklicken Sie auf das System-Symbol und klicken Sie dann im System-Fenster auf die Registerkarte Hardware.

3. Klicken Sie auf Gerätemanager, doppelklicken Sie Netzwerkadapter und rechtsklicken Sie dann US54EX USB Wireless Adapter

4. Klicken Sie auf Deinstallieren… wie in obenstehender Abbildung 2-6 dargestellt. Das System deinstalliert daraufhin die Treibersoftware des Adapters von Ihrem PC.

2.3.2 Deinstallieren des Dienstprogramms von Ihrem PC

1. Klicken Sie Start auf der Task-Leiste von Windows, wählen Sie Einstellungen und klicken Sie dann auf Systemeinstellungen.

2. Doppelklicken Sie auf das Symbol Software, suchen Sie das US54EX-Programm in der Liste der installierten Programme, markieren Sie es und klicken Sie auf Entfernen.

3. Daraufhin deinstalliert der Install Shield Wizard das Dienstprogramm von Ihrem PC.

Kapitel 3: Konfiguration

Der MSI US54EX USB Wireless Adapter kann mit Hilfe des Dienstprogramms konfiguriert werden. Dieser Abschnitt beschreibt, wie man den USB Wireless Adapter in Ihrem lokalen Funknetzwerk (WLAN) für drahtlose Verbindungen konfiguriert und wie man die Verschlüsselungsfunktionen zur Datensicherheit verwendet.

Nachdem der Treiber und das Dienstprogramm des Adapters installiert wurden,

erscheint das Symbol des Adapters, oder , im System Tray. Dies zeigt an, dass das Dienstprogramm auf Ihrem System läuft. Falls das Dienstprogramm nicht laufen sollte, können Sie es starten, indem Sie Folgendes klicken: Start> Program> MSI> US54EX> MSI US54EX Wireless Client Utility. Wenn das Symbol noch immer nicht erscheint, kann es sein, dass der Treiber oder das Dienstprogramm nicht korrekt installiert wurden, oder dass der Adapter nicht verbunden ist, bitte versuchen Sie es erneut.

Doppelklicken Sie auf das Symbol und das Konfigurationsfenster des

Dienstprogramms erscheint. Sie können das Dienstprogramm auch starten, indem Sie Folgendes klicken: Start> Program> MSI> US54EX> MSI US54EX Wireless Client Utility. Das Dienstprogramm bietet eine komplette und leicht zu verwendende Reihe an Werkzeugen:

Der nachfolgende Abschnitt beschreibt diese Funktionen.

Hinweis: Wenn Ihr Betriebssystem Windows XP ist, können Sie Windows XP verwenden, um die Einstellungen für das Drahtlosnetzwerk zu konfigurieren. (Zur Nutzung dieser Funktion müssen Sie das Betriebssystem mit SP1 aktualisieren.)

Wenn Sie Windows XP zur Konfiguration der Einstellungen für das Drahtlosnetzwerk verwenden möchten, beenden Sie das Dienstprogramm einfach. Rechtsklicken Sie das

Symbol unten auf dem Bildschirm, und klicken Sie Exit, um das Dienstprogramm zu

beenden.

3.1 Profil

Klicken Sie im Dienstprogramm auf die Registerkarte Profile und das Profil-Fenster,

Um ein neues Profil zu erstellen, klicken Sie in der Profil-Registerkarte auf Add und das Profil-Konfigurationsfenster erscheint, wie in Abbildung 3-2 dargestellt.

Um ein Profil zu bearbeiten, markieren Sie den gewünschten Profilnamen in der Profilnamenliste und klicken dann Edit, das Profil-Konfigurationsfenster erscheint, wie in Abbildung 3-2 dargestellt.

Um ein Profil zu löschen, markieren Sie den gewünschten Profilnamen in der Profilnamenliste und klicken dann Delete.

Um zu einem anderen Profil zu wechseln, markieren Sie den gewünschten Profilnamen in der Profilnamenliste und klicken dann Activate.

Hinweis: Vergessen Sie bei der Erstellung eines neuen Profils für eine Verbindung nicht, Apply (Übernehmen) zu klicken.

3.1.1 Ein Konfigurationsprofil hinzufügen oder bearbeiten

Um ein neues, Konfigurationsprofil hinzuzufügen, klicken Sie Add auf der Profil-Registerkarte. Um ein Konfigurationsprofil zu ändern, wählen Sie ein Profil aus der Liste und klicken dann Edit.

Die Dialogbox zur Profilverwaltung zeigt ein Fenster, welches dem in Abbildung 3-2 ähnelt.

1. Bearbeiten der Registerkarte Configuration

Profile Name - zeigt das Konfigurationsprofil. Dieser Name muss einmalig sein.

Profilnamen unterscheiden die Groß-/Kleinschreibung nicht. SSID - Der Name des IEEE 802.11-Drahtlosnetzwerks. Dieses Feld ist auf 32

Zeichen beschränkt. PSW(Power Save Mode - Energiesparmodus)

• CAM(Constantly Awake Mode) – Modus für dauerhafte Verbindung. • PSW(Power Saving Mode) - Energiesparmodus.

Network Type – Zeigt den Drahtlosmodus an, entweder Ad-hoc- oder Infrastrukturmodus

Preamble – Gibt die Präamble-Einstellung bei 802.11b an. Die Voreinstellung ist Auto Switch (Access-Point-Modus), der sowohl kurze als auch lange Header in den 802.11b-Frames zulässt. Der Adapter kann nur dann kurze Header verwenden, wenn der Access Point diese verwendet und unterstützt.

RTS Threshold – Voreinstellung ist 2312. Fragment Threshold – Voreinstellung ist 2312. Ad-hoc mode – zeigt den Drahtlosmodus an, entweder nur 802.11B- oder

802.11B/G-Modus. Channel – Zeigt den aktuell verwendeten Kanal an. Dieses Feld bestimmt, welche

Betriebsfrequenz verwendet wird.

2. Registerkarte Authentication and Security (Authentifizierung und Sicherheit) bearbeiten

Authentication Type – drei Authentifizierungsoptionen, Open System, Shared-Key System oder LEAP.

802.1x Setting – steht zur Verfügung wenn der Authentifizierungstyp WPA ist. Encryption – zeigt an, welcher Verschlüsselungstyp vom Treiber verwendet wird.

Wenn Sie Open System, Shared-Key System als Network Authentication (Netzwerk-Authentifizierung) wählen, so gibt es zwei Optionen: WEP und Disabled (deaktiviert). Wenn Sie WPA-PSK als Network Authentication wählen, so sind die Optionen TKIP und AES, anstelle von WEP und Disabled.

Wep Key – Key #1, Key #2, Key #3, Key #4, die Schlüsselgruppen. Sie können 10 hexadezimale Stellen eingeben (jede Kombination von 0-9, a-f, A-F) oder 5 ASCII-Zeichen für 64-Bit- (auch 40bits genannt) Verschlüsselung. Sie können 26 hexadezimale Stellen eingeben (jede Kombination von 0-9, a-f, A-F) oder 13 ASCII-Zeichen für 128-Bit- (auch 104bits genannt) Verschlüsselung.

3.2 Verbindungsstatus

Die Registerkarte Link Status zeigt den aktuellen Verbindungsstatus des Adapters.

Die folgende Aufstellung beschreibt die Elemente des Netzwerk-Statusfensters. Status - zeigt, ob die Station mit dem drahtlosen Netzwerk verbunden ist, wenn

keine Verbindung besteht, wird RF is closed angezeigt; wenn eine Verbindung besteht, wird der Name des Access Points und die BSSID angezeigt.

Extra Info - Zeigt den Verbindungsstatus und den aktuell verwendeten Kanal. Link Speed - zeigt die aktuelle maximale Übertragungsrate, die Einheit ist Mbit/Sek. Throughput - zeigt Tx- und Rx-Rate, die Einheit ist Kbit/Sek. Link Quality - zeigt die Qualität des Signals. Signal Strength - zeigt die Signalstärke.

3.3 Standort-Übersicht

Klicken Sie im Dienstprogramm auf die Registerkarte Site Survey und das Site Survey-Fenster (Stansort-Übersicht) erscheint, siehe Abbildung 3-5. Im Site Survey-Fenster lassen sich die verfügbaren Infrastruktur- und Ad-hoc-Netzwerke scannen.

Klicken Sie auf Rescan, um die Liste jederzeit zu aktualisieren. Markieren Sie eine SSID und klicken Sie auf Connect, um sich mit einem verfügbaren Netzwerk zu verbinden.

3.4 Statistik

Die Registerkarte Statistics zeigt zum Zweck der Diagnose statistische Empfangs- und Übertragungsinformationen über die vom Wireless-Netzwerkadapter empfangenen bzw. übertragenen Datenpakete. Klicken Sie auf Reset Counter (Zähler zurücksetzen), um die Zählung der statistischen Informationen zurückzusetzen.

3.5 Advanced (Erweitert)

In diesem Fenster können Sie den WEP Key konfigurieren bzw. den konfigurierten WEP Key ansehen.

Wireless mode - zeigt den Drahtlosmodus, entweder 802.11B/G mix oder 802.11B only.

B/S Protection - Bietet drei Optionen: entweder Auto (automatisch), Enable (aktivieren) oder Close (schließen).

TxRate - zeigt die aktuelle Übertragungsrate. TxBURST - wenn aktiviert, lassen sich mehr Daten übertragen. Fast Roaming at - Roaming wird deaktiviert, wenn die Übertragungsleistung

unterhalb einer bestimmten dBm-Grenze sinkt. Turn off RF - Der drahtlose Funkbetrieb des Adapters kann aktiviert oder deaktiviert

werden. Sie können den drahtlosen Funkbetrieb ausschalten, indem Sie auf den Schalter klicken.

Apply - Klicken Sie auf Apply (Übernehmen), um die aktuellen Einstellungen zu speichern.

3.6 About (Über)

Dieses Fenster zeigt Informationen über den Adapter an, einschließlich Treiberdatum, Treiberversion, Datum des Dienstprogramms, Version des Dienstprogramms, MAC-Adresse, IP-Adresse, Submaske, Energiesparmodus und Präambel.

Utility Version - die Version dieses Dienstprogramms. Utility Date - das Erstellungsdatum dieses Dienstprogramms. Driver Version - die Treiberversion des Wireless-Netzwerkadapters. 3.7 Ein Beispiel für die Anwendung

Angenommen, Sie haben einen Access Point installiert und betreiben diesen. Die SSID ist MSI und er verwendet eine 64-Bit-Verschlüsselung mit dem Schlüssel 0123456789. Um eine Verbindung mit diesem Access Point herzustellen, sollten Sie nachfolgende Schritte vornehmen: 1. Starten Sie das US54EX-Dienstprogramm. 2. Klicken Sie im Dienstprogramm auf die Registerkarte Profile und klicken Sie dann in

dem erscheinenden Fenster auf New. 3. Das Profil-Konfigurationsfenster erscheint. Bitte geben Sie unter Profile Name Test

ein und unter SSID MSI, wählen Sie Infrastructure als Netzwerkmodus (Network Mode) und wählen Sie WEP als Datenverschlüsselung (Data Encryption) und geben Sie 0123456789 als Netzwerkschlüssel (Network key) ein.

4. Klicken Sie auf OK, um das Profil zu speichern. 5. Klicken Sie im Profile-Fenster auf Apply. Das Dienstprogramm wird mit diesem

konfigurierten Profil eine Verbindung zum Access Point herstellen.

802.11b - Der Standard 802.11b spezifiziert drahtlose Netzwerke bei 11 Mbps mit DSSS-Technologie (Direct-Sequence Spread-Spectrum) und wird im nicht lizenzierten Funkspektrum bei 2,4 GHz mit WEP-Verschlüsselung für die Sicherheit betrieben. 802.11b-Netzwerke werden auch als Wi-Fi-Netzwerke bezeichnet.

802.11g - Spezifikation für drahtlose Netzwerke bei 54 Mbps mit DSSS-Technologie (Direct-Sequence Spread-Spectrum ) und OFDM-Modulation im nicht lizenzierten Funkspektrum bei 2,4 GHz, mit Abwärtskompatibilität zu IEEE 802.11b-Geräten und WEP-Verschlüsselung für die Sicherheit.

Ad-hoc-Netzwerk - Ein Ad-hoc-Netzwerk ist eine Gruppe von Computern, die, jeder mit einem Funkadapter, als unabhängiges 802.11-Funk-LAN miteinander verbunden sind. Ad-hoc-Computer arbeiten auf einer Peer-to-Peer-Basis, wobei sie direkt miteinander kommunizieren ohne einen Acces Point zu verwenden. Der Ad-hoc-Modus wird auch als IBSS (Independent Basic Service Set) oder als Peer-to-Peer-Modus bezeichnet und eignet sich auf Abteilungsebene oder in einer SOHO-Umgebung (Small Business/Home Office).

DSSS (Direct-Sequence Spread Spectrum) - DSSS erzeugt ein redundantes Bitmuster für alle übertragenen Daten. Dieses Bitmuster wird Chip (oder Chipping Code) genannt. Selbst wenn ein oder mehrere Bits während der Übertragung beschädigt werden, können statistische Techniken, die im Empfänger eingebettet sind, die originalen Daten wiederherstellen, ohne dass eine erneute Übertragung erforderlich ist. Einem unbeabsichtigtem Empfänger erscheint DSSS als breitbandiges Hintergrundrauschen und wird von den meisten Schmalbandempfängern zurückgewiesen (ignoriert). Dennoch wird das DSSS-Signal von einem beabsichtigten Empfänger (d.h. einem anderen Funk-LAN-Endpunkt) als das einzig gültige Signal erkannt und Störungen werden von vornherein abgewiesen (ignoriert).

FHSS (Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum) - FHSS ändert fortlaufend (springt) die Trägerfrequenz eines konventionellen Trägers. Dies geschieht mehrmals pro Sekunde gemäß einem pseudozufälligen Frequenzbereich. Da keine festgelegte Frequenz benutzt wird und nur der Sender und Empfänger die Sprungmuster kennen, ist das Abfangen von FHSS äußerst schwierig.

Infrastruktur-Netzwerk - Ein Infrastruktur-Netzwerk ist eine Gruppe von Computern oder anderen Geräten, jeder bzw. jedes mit einem Funkadapter, die als 802.11-Funk-LAN miteinander verbunden sind. Im Infrastruktur-Modus kommunizieren die drahtlosen Geräte miteinander und auch mit einem Kabelnetzwerk, indem sie zunächst über einen Access Point gehen. Ein Infrastruktur-Netzwerk, das mit einem Kabelnetzwerk verbunden ist, wird auch als BSS (Basic Service Set) bezeichnet. Zwei oder mehr BSS in einem Netzwerk werden auch als ESS (Extended Service Set) bezeichnet. Der Infrastruktur-Modus eignet sich

auf Unternehmensebene oder wenn es erforderlich ist, ein Funknetzwerk mit einem Kabelnetzwerk zu verbinden.

Spread Spectrum - Spread-Spectrum-Technologie (Frequenzspreizung) ist eine Breitband-Funkfrequenztechnik, die vom Militär für die Verwendung in zuverlässigen, sicheren, missionsentscheidenden Kommunikationssystemen entwickelt wurde. Sie wurde entwickelt, um für weniger Bandbreitenleistung mehr Zuverlässigkeit, Integrität und Sicherheit zu erhalten. Mit anderen Worten wird mehr Bandbreite benötigt als bei der Schmalbandübertragung. Im Gegenzug ergibt sich jedoch ein Signal, das tatsächlich stärker und somit einfacher zu empfangen ist, vorausgesetzt, dass der Empfänger die Parameter des übertragenen Spread-Spectrum-Signals kennt. Wenn ein Empfänger nicht auf die richtige Frequenz eingestellt ist, erscheint ein Spread-Spectrum-Signal wie Hintergrundrauschen. Es gibt hauptsächlich zwei Alternativen, DSSS (Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum) und FHSS (Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum).

SSID - Eine Service Set Identification ist ein alphanumerischer Schlüssel aus maximal 32 Zeichen zur Identifizierung in einem drahtlosen lokalen Netzwerk. Damit die drahtlosen Geräte in einem Netzwerk miteinander kommunizieren können, müssen alle Geräte mit der gleichen SSID konfiguriert sein. Dies ist normalerweise der Konfigurationsparameter für eine drahtlose PC-Karte. Sie stimmt mit der ESSID des drahtlosen Access Points und dem Namen des Funknetzes überein.

WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) - Ein Datenschutzmechanismus, der auf einem 64-bit, 128-bit oder 152-bit Shared-Key-Algorithmus beruht, wie unter dem IEEE 802.11-Standard beschrieben.

Wi-Fi - Eine Handelsbezeichnung für den 802.11b-Standard für Funknetze, die von der Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA, siehe http://www.wi-fi.net) vergeben wurde, einer Gruppe für industrielle Standards, welche die Zusammenarbeitsfähigkeit unter 802.11b-Geräten fördert.

WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) - Eine Gruppe von Computern und angeschlossenen Geräten, die drahtlos miteinander kommunizieren können, wobei das Netzwerk auf einen lokalen Bereich begrenzt ist.

WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) - Ein Sicherheitsprotokoll zur drahtlosen Datenübertragung mit TKIP- (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) Verschlüsselung, welche zusammen mit einem RADIUS-Server verwendet werden kann.
