Our division is called the “thermofluids division” and we therefore do research on fluids – which are substances with specific behavioral properties like deforming significantly when placed under stress. As humans we interact with and manipulate fluids in various ways which have a huge impact on our energy consumption and efficiency of energy production. We need to develop solar receivers to heat the air for rock bed energy storage systems. The trick is to pressurise the air before it enters the receiver, and depressurise it again before entering the rock bed. This calls for innovative receiver and turbomachinery systems design and development.
