Santa Ursula in north Tenerife is hosting an exhibition which is a far
cry from the usual artistic dis-plays that tend to figure on the activities’ programme.
The town’s famous Casona San Luis mansion house, which has just seen €1.4 million spent on an impressive renovation, is the venue until December 15 for one of the most impressive collections of Barbie dolls around.
The collection is the work of local resident Carmen Rivero. The lady in question is aged 46 and her life-long passion for dolls led her to begin collecting Barbies in 1999, since which time she has bought up an impressive range of limited editions from various coun-tries. on november 29 there will be a joint concert by the La Laguna hermand-ades and Cofradías at the town’s Teatro Leal with proceeds going to the organisation. november 30 will bring La Laguna’s turning on of the Christ-mas lights as part of their ‘White night’ activities and where the aeCC will also hold an information stall. on the same day there will be a Food Bank collection in supermarkets around the south of the island, and between December 4 and 8, from 10.30am to 9pm, there will be the antiques and Collectors’ fair in the Casa del Juez on Calle herradores in La Laguna.on December 12 the Los Cristianos auditorium will hold the Échate unas risas (have a laugh) show, with proceeds once again going to the aeCC and, don’t forget, on December 15 the won-derful Walk for Life event will leave from the Magma arts and Congress Centre in Las américas. the main attractions in the upcoming Canaries Gospel Festival.

dolls are extremely valuable and would fetch more than €1,000 each if sold. These include the rare Barbie Deirdre of Ulster, of which only a very small number were produced and which have become a highly prized collectors’ item. Speaking at the opening of the seven-week exhibition, Carmen said she would never have dreamt of putting her collection of around 300 dolls up for show but was per-suaded by Santa Ursula’s cultural affairs councillor.
The Casona de San Luis, also known as hacienda de San Luis, is located in the town’s main square (of the same name). The building itself is worth a visit as it is a beau-tiful example of Canarian architech-ture which once belonged to the Román family.
