and problematics of its central concept culture and globalization. The first part of thecourse introduces students to a basic and historic understanding of key conceptsin anthropology. We will explore a variety of concepts and theories that help us tounderstand the similarities, differences, connections and disconnections that shapeworld communities. Societies are complex: they do not only vary in how they areorganized and in which practices they engage; they also change, move, and arefluid, contested, and constantly changing in their 'form'. The second part of thecourse will give an insight into social practices that question, provoke or contest thesometimes supposedly fixed boundaries of society or culture. We will specifically lookat 'globalization', a concept that is widely used in both popular and scholarly arenas,describing the increasing intensities of flows of capital, people, commodities, andideologies across borders. We will interpret these movements through an ethnographiclens and analyze some of the meanings and implications of these global processes forpeople's everyday lives.

These canbe downloaded from the e-learning site: https://elearning2.uni-heidelberg.de/ Thepassword is “sax.” Your three questions must be sent by Monday evening at 19:00,two day before the class meets, or they will not be counted. They should be short (1-3sentences), and should provide grounds for discussion by commenting on or criticizingthe required readings, or pointing out their relations to other materials discussed inclass. These weekly questions are required to earn the 6 LPs, however the final gradewill be determined by your final essay (Hausarbeit). If you do not submit the weeklyquestions your final grade will be reduced accordingly.

Ethnographien zu Tamil Nadu zu vermitteln. Die Region, deren Bevölkerung, sowiederen Sprache ist Hauptaugenmerk einer erstaunlichen Anzahl an Ethnographien.Dies schließt sowohl Standardwerke als auch neuere ethnologische Studien mit ein.Insofern werden Studierende in diesem Seminar nicht nur die Möglichkeit haben,Tamil Nadu durch diese Ethnographien besser kennen zu lernen, sondern siewerden sich auch am Beispiel Tamil Nadus mit einigen der grundlegenden Theorienund Streitfragen auseinander setzen, welche die Disziplin der Ethnologie in denvergangenen Jahrzehnten geprägt haben.

communication and the anthropology of visual communication. This course is lookinginto these two modes of anthropology.In the first part of this course we will explore the visual dimensions of anthropologyas a scholarly activity-films, photographs, maps, or museum displays to conveyanthropological knowledge. In the second part we will explore the concept ofvisual culture as an object of anthropological study. The visual, however, is alwaysentangled with our other senses and therefore we will investigate the various sensoryengagements in and of anthropology. We will look into the interrelation and positionof the visual, sound and silence, smell, and touch and their relationship to socialexperience.Taken together these thematic foci will lead us to critically investigate but also use(audio-)visual research methods. After attending this course, students will becomefamiliar with visual methods and approaches in multi-media projects, and are expectedto carry out their own multi-media project.

Fiktion, "fiction" und Ethnografie(n). Von der Krise der Repräsentation bis zur Literaturethnologie

zwei Ebenen: Die »Krise der ethnographischen Repräsentation«, nach dem vonJames Clifford und George E. Marcus im Jahr 1986 herausgegebenen, im Zentrumder Diskussion stehenden Buch auch »Writing Culture«-Debatte genannt, richteteden Blick der Ethnologie auf einen Aspekt der eigenen Arbeit, der bis dahin nurungenügend thematisiert worden war: das ethnographische Schreiben. Lange Zeitzugunsten der Feldforschung als zentralem Bestandteil der ethnographischen Praxisunberücksichtigt geblieben, wurde dieses nun zum Fokus der Aufmerksamkeit. Manbegann, »Ethnographien als Texte« zu lesen und auf die in ihnen verwendetenrhetorischen und literarischen Stilmittel hin zu untersuchen. Diese Entwicklungführte zu einer Infragestellung gängiger Repräsentationsformen. Insbesonderedie Kritik am totalisierenden ›ethnographischen Realismus‹ führte zu einer Reiheexperimenteller Ethnographien, in denen der Forschungsprozess als integralerBestandteil ethnographischen Schreibens - einem Vorgang, der schließlich schonim Feld begann - reflektiert wurde. Einige dieser experimentellen Ethnographienzeichneten sich auch in ihrer Form durch Reflexivität aus: um die Dialogizität derForschungssituation - einem Aushandeln der Interpretation zwischen Forschendenund Informanten - gerecht werden zu können, wurde versucht, auch im Text dendialogischen Charakter formal zu wahren. In einigen Fällen wurden dabei dieGrenzen zwischen Ethnographie und literarischen Texten überschritten. Da manjedoch parallel dazu eine Unterscheidung zwischen ›objektiven‹ (wissenschaftlichen)und ›fiktiven‹ (literarischen) Texten hinterfragte, wurde dies nicht unbedingt alsstörend empfunden. James Clifford bezeichnete in seiner Einleitung zu »WritingCulture« Ethnographien daher insofern als Fiktion, als sie zwar kein erdachtesMaterial beinhalten würden, aufgrund des Ungesagten allerdings nur partial truths,Teilwahrheiten, seien.

Aufbauend auf einer Auseinandersetzung mit der Writing-Culture-Debatte sollen indiesem Seminar u.a. folgende Fragen diskutiert werden:- Wie werden Ethnographien literarisch konstruiert?- Wo verlaufen die Grenzen zwischen (experimentellen) Ethnographien,(ethnographischen) Romanen und journalistischen (ethnographischen) Reportagen?- Wie haben sich Ethnologie und Literaturwissenschaft gegenseitig beeinflusst? Undwelchen Beitrag können Sie füreinander leisten?- Wie können wir den vielschichtigen Begriff "fiction" definieren?- Wie könnte ein mögliches Forschungsfeld der Literaturethnologie aussehen?

massiert aber ca. 1970-2000. Sie wurden von diversen zielgerichteten politischen,ökonomischen, religiösen Institutionen und Bewegungen gegründet, die mehr oderweniger unabhängig, aber auf das Ziel der Ursprungsinstitution ausgerichtet, Ideen undStrategien entwickeln sollten. Dies ging besonders von den USA aus (ca. 35% allerThink Tanks), wurde aber bald von anderen Ländern nachgeahmt. Im Seminar sollendaher einige, globale Ziele verfolgende Think Tanks, hauptsächlich aus den USA,studiert/analysiert und interpretiert werden. Dazu gehören The Carnegie Endowment forInternational Peace, The Council on Foreign Relations, The Progressive Policy Institute,oder 'Bewegungen' wie das "Neoliberal Thought Collective", in dessen Feld z.B. dieMont Pèlerin Society eine wichtige Rolle spielt, aber auch, als Komplex, Silicon Valley.

1990er Jahren insbesondere auf der globalen politischen Bühne eine neue Blüteerfahren, die mit der Anerkennung "indigener" Rechte durch eine UN Konventionvom Jahre 2007 ihren bisherigen Höhepunkt fand. In der Ethnologie entspannsich mit Bezug auf diese Entwicklungen eine bis heute andauernde theoretischeDebatte um den Begriff. Einige Vertreter des Faches bewerten "Ursprünglichkeit"oder "Indigenität" als eine aus wissenschaftlicher Sicht obsolete Begrifflichkeit,welche eine romantisierende und vorurteilsbeladene imaginäre Sichtweise auf dieseGemeinschaften beinhalte und in kolonialen Kontexten zudem eine abwertendeKonnotation hatte (siehe Kuper 2003). Dahingegen argumentieren Ethnologen auchvehement für eine vorbehaltlose Unterstützung "indigener" Bewegungen. Ihnen zufolgebiete der Bezug auf die Autochthonie von Gemeinschaften oder "indigene" Traditioneneine vielversprechende Strategie, um politische und ökonomische Anrechte für dieseBevölkerungsgruppen einzufordern. So konnte in der Tat eine internationale NGO dankder Positionierung der "indigenen" Gruppe der Kondh aus Indien als die "lebensechten"Avatar (in Bezug auf den gleichnamigen Hollywood-Film) ein geplantes Aluminium-Bergbauprojekt auf deren sakralen Boden verhindern. In neueren Beiträgen zur Debattewerden vermehrt die Praktiken des politischen Protestes und dessen vielfältigerAkteure untersucht. Es wird diesbezüglich auch auf die ambivalenten Folgen desstrategischen Bezuges auf "Indigenität" verwiesen, die beispielsweise zur beständigenMarginalisierung dieser Bevölkerungsgruppen innerhalb der Nationalstaaten beitrage.Im Mittelpunkt des Seminars steht die gemeinsame Lektüre und Diskussion derunterschiedlichen theoretischen Ansätze aus der Debatte. Es gilt zudem, diegegenwärtige Stellung der Ethnologie in der politischen Arena und vis-à-vis der"Indigenen" selbst zu reflektieren, zumal neue und frühere Forschungsergebnisse ausder Ethnologie zur politischen Entscheidungsfindung in Konflikten zwischen "indigenen"und "nicht indigenen" Akteuren herangezogen werden. Verankerung handeln. Ein solcher Ort des sozialen Miteinanders ist ohne einereligiöse Verwurzelung als kultur- und wertestiftend nicht denkbar. Doch befindet sichgerade dieses vor allem implizit vermittelte kulturelle Erbe durch Globalisierungs-und Migrationsprozesse in einem stetigen Fluss der Transformation. Kulturelleund religiöse Praktiken und Identitäten nehmen aufeinander Einfluss, was in neukonstituierten Lebenswelten und neuen Herausforderungen des kulturellen Alltagsmündet. Hier treffen nicht nur Wertevorstellungen aufeinander, sondern fundamentaleWahrheitsvorstellungen von Werten und Normen. Theologische Auffassungen, wieauch Auffassungen der Alltagsethik, stehen genauso vor neuen Herausforderungen,wie die Wahrheitsvorstellung des jeweiligen Weltbildes selbst. Die Rolle der Ethnologiewird hier immer virulenter: Denn hier am Schnittpunkt von Religion, Kultur undLebenswelt sind ethnologische Transferleistungen unumgänglich.

- and where - are we best to approach Islam as a topic of anthropological enquiry? Isit to be sought in the mosques and Qur'anic schools of rural Java? Or perhaps in thetransnational networks that link Indonesia with the wider Islamic world? Alternativelyshould we look to the local ballot box and the work of Islamic civil society groups? Orto popular Islamic programming on television and in the cinema, and in the vibrantdiscussions taking place through social media? This course examines the relationshipbetween Islam and public culture in contemporary Indonesia with an eye to questionsof broader theoretical import. Issues of piety, ethics and bodily comportment willbe examined vis-à-vis public debates on such topics as Islamic attire, education,economics, polygamy and pornography. In addition to readings from the currentscholarship, the course will examine materials (in translation) from the Indonesianpress, television and film, as well as social media.

anthropology of development. It equips participants with the knowledge and analyticskills to critically appraise current debates on development and international aid inanthropology. In the first part of the semester, we lay the theoretical foundations.By reading and discussing anthropological arguments about underdevelopment,about development as discourse and as practice of government, as assemblage andactor-networks, participants come to understand the genealogy of current theoreticalapproaches. In the second part, we analyse the enabling and limiting effects ofparticular theoretical approaches for making sense of ethnographic observations ofinternational development cooperation. Ethnographic themes include expertise and therole of documents, social life in 'aidland', travelling concepts such as human rights andgood governance, and neoliberal aid.

und keine unmittelbare Berufsausbildung. Deshalb sollen Studierende sich schonwährend des Studiums durch ein Praktikum auf eine eventuelle berufliche Praxisvorbereiten. In diesem Modul sollen sie einen ersten Einblick in mögliche Berufsfeldergewinnen (z.B. Entwicklungszusammenarbeit, Friedens- und Konfliktforschung,Jugend- und Erwachsenenbildung, Kulturmanagement, Migrations- und interkulturelleBil-dungsarbeit, Internationale Organisationen, Medienbereich sowie Verlagswesen,Museen und freies Ausstellungswesen, Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, Werbung und Tourismus,Organisations- und Marktforschung sowie wissenschaftliche Einrichtungen), erstepraktische Erfahrungen sammeln und diese durch ihre im Studium gewonnenKenntnisse wissenschaftlich reflektieren. Neben dem Erwerb erster Kenntnisse indem jeweiligen Arbeitsbereich lernen die Studierenden, wie man eine Bewerbungschreibt und ein Vorstellungsgespräch führt. massiert aber ca. 1970-2000. Sie wurden von diversen zielgerichteten politischen,ökonomischen, religiösen Institutionen und Bewegungen gegründet, die mehr oderweniger unabhängig, aber auf das Ziel der Ursprungsinstitution ausgerichtet, Ideen undStrategien entwickeln sollten. Dies ging besonders von den USA aus (ca. 35% allerThink Tanks), wurde aber bald von anderen Ländern nachgeahmt. Im Seminar sollendaher einige, globale Ziele verfolgende Think Tanks, hauptsächlich aus den USA,studiert/analysiert und interpretiert werden. Dazu gehören The Carnegie Endowment forInternational Peace, The Council on Foreign Relations, The Progressive Policy Institute,oder 'Bewegungen' wie das "Neoliberal Thought Collective", in dessen Feld z.B. dieMont Pèlerin Society eine wichtige Rolle spielt, aber auch, als Komplex, Silicon Valley.

1990er Jahren insbesondere auf der globalen politischen Bühne eine neue Blüteerfahren, die mit der Anerkennung "indigener" Rechte durch eine UN Konventionvom Jahre 2007 ihren bisherigen Höhepunkt fand. In der Ethnologie entspannsich mit Bezug auf diese Entwicklungen eine bis heute andauernde theoretischeDebatte um den Begriff. Einige Vertreter des Faches bewerten "Ursprünglichkeit"oder "Indigenität" als eine aus wissenschaftlicher Sicht obsolete Begrifflichkeit,welche eine romantisierende und vorurteilsbeladene imaginäre Sichtweise auf dieseGemeinschaften beinhalte und in kolonialen Kontexten zudem eine abwertendeKonnotation hatte (siehe Kuper 2003). Dahingegen argumentieren Ethnologen auchvehement für eine vorbehaltlose Unterstützung "indigener" Bewegungen. Ihnen zufolgebiete der Bezug auf die Autochthonie von Gemeinschaften oder "indigene" Traditioneneine vielversprechende Strategie, um politische und ökonomische Anrechte für dieseBevölkerungsgruppen einzufordern. So konnte in der Tat eine internationale NGO dank

der Positionierung der "indigenen" Gruppe der Kondh aus Indien als die "lebensechten"Avatar (in Bezug auf den gleichnamigen Hollywood-Film) ein geplantes Aluminium-Bergbauprojekt auf deren sakralen Boden verhindern. In neueren Beiträgen zur Debattewerden vermehrt die Praktiken des politischen Protestes und dessen vielfältigerAkteure untersucht. Es wird diesbezüglich auch auf die ambivalenten Folgen desstrategischen Bezuges auf "Indigenität" verwiesen, die beispielsweise zur beständigenMarginalisierung dieser Bevölkerungsgruppen innerhalb der Nationalstaaten beitrage.Im Mittelpunkt des Seminars steht die gemeinsame Lektüre und Diskussion derunterschiedlichen theoretischen Ansätze aus der Debatte. Es gilt zudem, diegegenwärtige Stellung der Ethnologie in der politischen Arena und vis-à-vis der"Indigenen" selbst zu reflektieren, zumal neue und frühere Forschungsergebnisse ausder Ethnologie zur politischen Entscheidungsfindung in Konflikten zwischen "indigenen"und "nicht indigenen" Akteuren herangezogen werden. - and where - are we best to approach Islam as a topic of anthropological enquiry? Isit to be sought in the mosques and Qur'anic schools of rural Java? Or perhaps in thetransnational networks that link Indonesia with the wider Islamic world? Alternativelyshould we look to the local ballot box and the work of Islamic civil society groups? Orto popular Islamic programming on television and in the cinema, and in the vibrantdiscussions taking place through social media? This course examines the relationshipbetween Islam and public culture in contemporary Indonesia with an eye to questionsof broader theoretical import. Issues of piety, ethics and bodily comportment willbe examined vis-à-vis public debates on such topics as Islamic attire, education,economics, polygamy and pornography. In addition to readings from the currentscholarship, the course will examine materials (in translation) from the Indonesianpress, television and film, as well as social media.

Verankerung handeln. Ein solcher Ort des sozialen Miteinanders ist ohne einereligiöse Verwurzelung als kultur- und wertestiftend nicht denkbar. Doch befindet sichgerade dieses vor allem implizit vermittelte kulturelle Erbe durch Globalisierungs-und Migrationsprozesse in einem stetigen Fluss der Transformation. Kulturelleund religiöse Praktiken und Identitäten nehmen aufeinander Einfluss, was in neukonstituierten Lebenswelten und neuen Herausforderungen des kulturellen Alltagsmündet. Hier treffen nicht nur Wertevorstellungen aufeinander, sondern fundamentaleWahrheitsvorstellungen von Werten und Normen. Theologische Auffassungen, wieauch Auffassungen der Alltagsethik, stehen genauso vor neuen Herausforderungen,wie die Wahrheitsvorstellung des jeweiligen Weltbildes selbst. Die Rolle der Ethnologiewird hier immer virulenter: Denn hier am Schnittpunkt von Religion, Kultur undLebenswelt sind ethnologische Transferleistungen unumgänglich.In diesem Seminar werden wir uns mit Aushandlungsprozessen kultureller undreligiöser Traditionen, Werten und Normen in Ethnologie, Religionswissenschaftenund Religions- und Lebensphilosophie vor dem Hintergrund von Globalisierungund Migration auseinandersetzten. zwei Ebenen: Die »Krise der ethnographischen Repräsentation«, nach dem vonJames Clifford und George E. Marcus im Jahr 1986 herausgegebenen, im Zentrumder Diskussion stehenden Buch auch »Writing Culture«-Debatte genannt, richteteden Blick der Ethnologie auf einen Aspekt der eigenen Arbeit, der bis dahin nurungenügend thematisiert worden war: das ethnographische Schreiben. Lange Zeitzugunsten der Feldforschung als zentralem Bestandteil der ethnographischen Praxisunberücksichtigt geblieben, wurde dieses nun zum Fokus der Aufmerksamkeit. Manbegann, »Ethnographien als Texte« zu lesen und auf die in ihnen verwendetenrhetorischen und literarischen Stilmittel hin zu untersuchen. Diese Entwicklungführte zu einer Infragestellung gängiger Repräsentationsformen. Insbesonderedie Kritik am totalisierenden ›ethnographischen Realismus‹ führte zu einer Reiheexperimenteller Ethnographien, in denen der Forschungsprozess als integralerBestandteil ethnographischen Schreibens - einem Vorgang, der schließlich schonim Feld begann - reflektiert wurde. Einige dieser experimentellen Ethnographienzeichneten sich auch in ihrer Form durch Reflexivität aus: um die Dialogizität derForschungssituation - einem Aushandeln der Interpretation zwischen Forschenden

und Informanten - gerecht werden zu können, wurde versucht, auch im Text dendialogischen Charakter formal zu wahren. In einigen Fällen wurden dabei dieGrenzen zwischen Ethnographie und literarischen Texten überschritten. Da manjedoch parallel dazu eine Unterscheidung zwischen ›objektiven‹ (wissenschaftlichen)und ›fiktiven‹ (literarischen) Texten hinterfragte, wurde dies nicht unbedingt alsstörend empfunden. James Clifford bezeichnete in seiner Einleitung zu »WritingCulture« Ethnographien daher insofern als Fiktion, als sie zwar kein erdachtesMaterial beinhalten würden, aufgrund des Ungesagten allerdings nur partial truths,Teilwahrheiten, seien.

Aufbauend auf einer Auseinandersetzung mit der Writing-Culture-Debatte sollen indiesem Seminar u.a. folgende Fragen diskutiert werden:- Wie werden Ethnographien literarisch konstruiert?- Wo verlaufen die Grenzen zwischen (experimentellen) Ethnographien,(ethnographischen) Romanen und journalistischen (ethnographischen) Reportagen?- Wie haben sich Ethnologie und Literaturwissenschaft gegenseitig beeinflusst? Undwelchen Beitrag können Sie füreinander leisten?- Wie können wir den vielschichtigen Begriff "fiction" definieren?- Wie könnte ein mögliches Forschungsfeld der Literaturethnologie aussehen?

In the second part, we analyse the enabling and limiting effects ofparticular theoretical approaches for making sense of ethnographic observations ofinternational development cooperation. Ethnographic themes include expertise and therole of documents, social life in 'aidland', travelling concepts such as human rights andgood governance, and neoliberal aid.

communication and the anthropology of visual communication. This course is lookinginto these two modes of anthropology.In the first part of this course we will explore the visual dimensions of anthropologyas a scholarly activity-films, photographs, maps, or museum displays to conveyanthropological knowledge. In the second part we will explore the concept ofvisual culture as an object of anthropological study. The visual, however, is alwaysentangled with our other senses and therefore we will investigate the various sensoryengagements in and of anthropology. We will look into the interrelation and positionof the visual, sound and silence, smell, and touch and their relationship to socialexperience.Taken together these thematic foci will lead us to critically investigate but also use(audio-)visual research methods. After attending this course, students will becomefamiliar with visual methods and approaches in multi-media projects, and are expectedto carry out their own multi-media project.

and a focus of study. It is embedded in a heterogeneous landscape of theoreticaland methodological approaches drawing on many disciplines and covering diversethematic, historical and geographic areas. Jointly conducted by researchers in thethree study foci of the MA Transcultural Studies, this lecture class will explore thecontributions and limitations of inherited and current approaches to cultural interactions.Theories and methods will be tested, e.g., in explorations of global art and exhibitionpractices, appropriations of philosophical and religious ideas, and the relationshipbetween patterns of consumption and exchanges of commodities. The goal of thecourse is to introduce students to diverse disciplinary perspectives enabling them toframe their own studies of transcultural phenomena.

cultural contexts. Photographs or YouTube clips rapidly circulate in various onlinemedia and reach a countless number of people all over the world. Thus, differentkinds of unfiltered knowledge, information and events are transferred, translated, andacknowledged. Especially during times of crises, natural catastrophes or disasters,visual materials published in social media play a crucial role to 'keep updated', 'feelwith' or 'make up your mind'. Borrowed from the discipline of psychology the notionof 'motivated attention' addresses how such visualized information is perceived andemployed for social engagement across geographic and cultural borders. Hereby"practices of looking" are inherent and interlinked with other strategies such asconsuming of or producing visual material in different cultural settings. This doesnot only allow us to critically elaborate on historical careers of mass media such asphotography, facebook or YouTube but will draw our attention to visual practicessuch as street art, 'selfies' or mobile-filmung as transcultural processes of criticalengagement and solidarity with incidents such as the 'Arab spring' or 'Charlie Hebdo'.The aim of this course will be to discuss selected case studies in context of visualculture and media studies with particular focus on ethnographic methodologies.

into forested landscapes across tropical Asia. From the colonial introduction ofplantations to postcolonial land-rushes by small-scale cash crop farmers, South andSoutheast Asian have witnessed dynamic processes of encounters between agrariancapitalism and indigenous forms of land use (such as swiden cultivation). The mainfocus of the seminar will be on interrogating the notion of an agrarian frontier, whichis increasingly gaining traction in anthropological literature. These assemblages aredynamic frontiers of law (land rights, conservation regimes), economy (capitalist andnon-capitalist relations of labor and exchange), culture (migrants and indigenouspopulations) and power (edges of statehood, Zomia). It will be of special interest to lookat the role of specific plants (crops) in co-producing these landscapes. What are thespecifics contributions of the socionatural properies of plants like tea, rubber, palm oil,or ginger in creating these frontier situation.

world religions. Constantly under pressure from more organized religions (Islam,Christianity, Buddhism etc.), shamanic practices and religious specialists have showna marked resilience, enabling shamanism to an interminable process of adaptationin order to adapt and survive even under hostile conditions. In ancient, colonial andeven post-modern times, shamanistic specialists have always been targeted byinternal or external agents of civilizational processes, almost constantly devoted tothe eradication or the “domestication” of popular/folk/vernacular/subaltern form ofreligious life. To many of these religious conflicts, a gendered dimension was alsoadded, since many shamanic specialists were women, thereby doubly targeted bymale-dominated religious establishments. This course is at the same time a lectureseries and a seminar. Guests (including Zarcone, Hamayon, Aitpaeva and many others)specialized on the larger region from Siberia, Central Asia to the Himalaya and beyondwill present their research while sessions in between are reserved for preparation andtheoretical discussions.

commodifications and commercializations, ideal and material accounts of heritage andhistory.The seminar will look at the construction of natural and cultural heritage sitesbased on critical heritage theory and discourses on conservation, perception andstewardship. An ever-growing tourism industry as well as international competitionfor UNESCO world heritage listing foster new ways of imagining, constructing andpromoting tangible and intangible heritage. This includes negotiations of diverse actorsabout preservation, restoration or demolition that reflect back on the construction ofauthentic heritage experiences. Related multisensory experiences of heritage will beapproached as examples of a 'vital materialism'. associated with the book Writing Culture edited in 1986 by James Clifford and GeorgeMarcus. 'Writing Culture' moved the anthropological focus from the epistemology inresearch to the examination of culture as text and ethnography as a type of literature.Implicit in this argument were questions about ethnographic authority, the politics ofrepresentation and the implications of reflexivity and intersubjectivity for ethnographicpractice. Writing culture focused on the anthropologist as author, the novel asethnography, and sought new textual strategies in ethnographic writing. Our aim inthe seminar will be to assess both the contributions and limitations/weaknesses of thisapproach and to consider the theoretical implications for an engaged anthropologyalmost three decaces later.

Almost half a century ago the 'environment' was put on the agenda of internationalconcern, yet the official environmental response has largely been one of offeringtechnological and managerial fixes which, rather than addressing or solving thebasic ecological problems, often create new ones. Against this backdrop, in thistransdisciplinary graduate seminar, we shall begin by closely examining South Asianconcepts of ecology and environmental ethics, thereby providing an overview of traditionalindigenous knowledge systems. Secondly, we shall scrutinise the colonial extraction ofbiological resources, underscored by western techniques and concepts such as “scientificforestry” and “environmental management”. Thirdly, one of the aims of our discussionswill be to foreground the ensuing effects on the human-nature interactions by referenceto empirical case-studies. Fourthly, we shall study representative examples of popularresistance to recent policies (by farmers, women, etc.), and analyse new environmentalistparadigms (e.g. political ecology, eco-feminism) promoted by intellectuals and politicalactivists. Last but not least, we will examine the contribution of such movements to globalenvironmentalist discourse. This graduate seminar will be of special interest to studentsof South Asian history, geography, anthropology, political science, and Indology, but alsoto social scientists concerned with environmentalist problems in our globalised world.

This class will be held in English. Inhalt This seminar is held jointly by the disciplines of Geography and Cultural Anthropology.

Our aim is to engage urban theory with concrete examples from cities in the so-called“Global South” and the “Global North”. The idea behind this is that most of the currentresearch on urbanization processes is strongly related to perspectives from either theNorth (West) or the South, and that it is still evolving from concepts rooted in Euro-American epistemologies. “Planetary Urbanism” challenges established canons, forinstance, binary oppositions we easily take for granted, such as “urban” – “rural”,“centre”-“periphery”, “public” - “private” or “developed” and “backward”.

While Prof. Brosius is working on Indian cities, Prof. Gerhard has done most of herresearch on North American cities. What can we learn from a cosmopolitan and multi-sited perspective? The concept of planetary urbanism (Brenner 2013, Brenner &Schmid2015) offers some theoretical background to approach cities throughout the globe.Thus, we will structure this seminar with intensive reading on comparative or planetaryurbanism, accompanied by discussions and presentation by the students. We start withsessions on theoretical concepts, followed by key themes and case studies. By theend of the seminar, students will be encouraged to present individual or team-basedprojects.

Other activities, besides intense discussions of the mandatory readings for each classwill be the production of a class paper, and short commentaries on readings or specificcases of urbanization.

Themes of the class are: Inequality and segregation; Middle classes and gatedcommunities; the spectacle city (mega-events), Urban protest movements; Migrationand public art.

Regional examples in the readings cover South Africa, India, Canada, Germany, theGulf States, or the USA.

Asia, particularly India and China. It is based on the research conducted by the HERASINGLE project in Delhi and Shanghai (www.hera-single.de)

In the last decades the number of female and male singles has increased considerablyin India and China due to changing family patterns and various (trans)culturalencounters such as border-crossing media, migration flows, cosmopolitan aspirationsand neoliberal notions of 'Global cities'. In this course we will aim at answering thefollowing questions: Why do women and men increasingly choose to be single inChinese and Indian urban centres? How does being single affect the movement andperception of women in public spaces in Shanghai and Delhi? What imaginaries comeinto being due to new possibilities for gender subjectivities? In how far does singlehoodaffect career choices? Are their differences in single (wo)men's perception in India andChina?

speak about young Muslims many of them having parents with a migratory background.Most researchers have preferred to leave the debate to the press who has raised allkinds of issues and assertions often lacking any solid foundation. But the subject ofMuslim youth in Europe has been researched by sociologists and social anthropologistsmore or less detached from political events. In this course we will discuss academictexts on Muslim youth in Europe and Russia and once acquiring a solid base also takea critical look at textual productions of media on the subject of Muslim, youth, terrorism,jihad, etc. The course is meant to be an introduction to the subject via sociological andsocial anthropological writings covering Europe and Russia.

Beyond Writing Culture

associated with the book Writing Culture edited in 1986 by James Clifford and GeorgeMarcus. 'Writing Culture' moved the anthropological focus from the epistemology inresearch to the examination of culture as text and ethnography as a type of literature.Implicit in this argument were questions about ethnographic authority, the politics ofrepresentation and the implications of reflexivity and intersubjectivity for ethnographicpractice. Writing culture focused on the anthropologist as author, the novel asethnography, and sought new textual strategies in ethnographic writing. Our aim inthe seminar will be to assess both the contributions and limitations/weaknesses of thisapproach and to consider the theoretical implications for an engaged anthropologyalmost three decaces later.

"Tibetan medicine" shows already the political connotations of the subject in thoseregions.The topic will be stretched over time and regions (Mongolia, China, TAR, Bhutan,Nepal, India, Europe, USA), as well as actors (doctors, amchi, Men-Tsee-Khang,Mentsikhang, div. governments, 'biomedicine', pharma industry). We will investigateTibetan medicine and its politics in the encounter of healers and patients, as wellas in regard to processes of revival and reinvention, processes of syncretism andassimilation, and identity formation.

This seminar starts at 19th of October 2015. Participants will read one basic text foreach session, give one oral presentation of a session topic and write a term paper.Previous registration via email is requested.

and a focus of study. It is embedded in a heterogeneous landscape of theoreticaland methodological approaches drawing on many disciplines and covering diversethematic, historical and geographic areas. Jointly conducted by researchers in thethree study foci of the MA Transcultural Studies, this lecture class will explore thecontributions and limitations of inherited and current approaches to cultural interactions.Theories and methods will be tested, e.g., in explorations of global art and exhibitionpractices, appropriations of philosophical and religious ideas, and the relationshipbetween patterns of consumption and exchanges of commodities. The goal of thecourse is to introduce students to diverse disciplinary perspectives enabling them toframe their own studies of transcultural phenomena.

cultural contexts. Photographs or YouTube clips rapidly circulate in various onlinemedia and reach a countless number of people all over the world. Thus, differentkinds of unfiltered knowledge, information and events are transferred, translated, andacknowledged. Especially during times of crises, natural catastrophes or disasters,visual materials published in social media play a crucial role to 'keep updated', 'feelwith' or 'make up your mind'. Borrowed from the discipline of psychology the notionof 'motivated attention' addresses how such visualized information is perceived andemployed for social engagement across geographic and cultural borders. Hereby"practices of looking" are inherent and interlinked with other strategies such asconsuming of or producing visual material in different cultural settings. This doesnot only allow us to critically elaborate on historical careers of mass media such asphotography, facebook or YouTube but will draw our attention to visual practicessuch as street art, 'selfies' or mobile-filmung as transcultural processes of criticalengagement and solidarity with incidents such as the 'Arab spring' or 'Charlie Hebdo'.The aim of this course will be to discuss selected case studies in context of visualculture and media studies with particular focus on ethnographic methodologies.

Interdisciplinary seminar together with Prof. Christiane Brosisus, Anthropology,Heidelberg Center for Transcultural Studies

This class will be held in English. Inhalt This seminar is held jointly by the disciplines of Geography and Cultural Anthropology.

Our aim is to engage urban theory with concrete examples from cities in the so-called“Global South” and the “Global North”. The idea behind this is that most of the currentresearch on urbanization processes is strongly related to perspectives from either theNorth (West) or the South, and that it is still evolving from concepts rooted in Euro-American epistemologies. “Planetary Urbanism” challenges established canons, forinstance, binary oppositions we easily take for granted, such as “urban” – “rural”,“centre”-“periphery”, “public” - “private” or “developed” and “backward”.

While Prof. Brosius is working on Indian cities, Prof. Gerhard has done most of herresearch on North American cities. What can we learn from a cosmopolitan and multi-sited perspective? The concept of planetary urbanism (Brenner 2013, Brenner &Schmid2015) offers some theoretical background to approach cities throughout the globe.Thus, we will structure this seminar with intensive reading on comparative or planetaryurbanism, accompanied by discussions and presentation by the students. We start withsessions on theoretical concepts, followed by key themes and case studies. By theend of the seminar, students will be encouraged to present individual or team-basedprojects.

Other activities, besides intense discussions of the mandatory readings for each classwill be the production of a class paper, and short commentaries on readings or specificcases of urbanization.

Themes of the class are: Inequality and segregation; Middle classes and gatedcommunities; the spectacle city (mega-events), Urban protest movements; Migrationand public art.

Regional examples in the readings cover South Africa, India, Canada, Germany, theGulf States, or the USA.

Asia, particularly India and China. It is based on the research conducted by the HERASINGLE project in Delhi and Shanghai (www.hera-single.de)

In the last decades the number of female and male singles has increased considerablyin India and China due to changing family patterns and various (trans)culturalencounters such as border-crossing media, migration flows, cosmopolitan aspirationsand neoliberal notions of 'Global cities'. In this course we will aim at answering thefollowing questions: Why do women and men increasingly choose to be single inChinese and Indian urban centres? How does being single affect the movement andperception of women in public spaces in Shanghai and Delhi? What imaginaries comeinto being due to new possibilities for gender subjectivities? In how far does singlehoodaffect career choices? Are their differences in single (wo)men's perception in India andChina?
