The author then pleads for a proper understanding and evaluation of the Old Testament by means of judicious criticism.

Leser Lazarus (1822-1879), an elder brother of the philosopher Moritz Lazarus, was director of the Jewish theological seminary in Breslau from 1875 to his death and taught Talmud and rab- binical literature in that institution.
