Von Anfängen und Zielen Of beginnings and goals

Seit dem September 2015 ist Worlds of Contradiction als geisteswissen-schaftliche Verbundforschungsinitiati-ve der Fachbereiche 8, 9, 10 und 12 in den drei Projektbereichen Machtdif-ferenzen, Wissensformen und Ver-handlungspraxen aktiv. Der interdis-ziplinäre Zusammenschluss von Wis-senschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaft-lern aller Karrierestufen betreibt die Entwicklung des Forschungsfeldes Contradiction Studies. Dabei geht es nicht allein um logische Widersprüche im Sinne des Aussa-genausschlusses, sondern auch um geisteswissenschaftliche Perspektiven auf Konzepte und Phänomene, die als Widersprüche in Kultur und Geschich-te koexistent sind. Ebenso rückt in WoC der Widerspruch als Praxis der Widerrede in den Fokus wissen-schaftlichen Interesses. Ihren feierlichen Auftakt beging die Verbundforschungsinitiative am 26. November 2015 mit einem Gastvor-trag der Soziologin und Philosophin

Prof. Dr. Christine Hauskeller (Univer-sity of Exeter, UK) zum Thema „Nego-tiating Human Identities via Genetics“ und anschließendem Empfang. Das WoC-Plenum, die an Worlds of Contradiction beteiligten Wissen-schaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler, trafen sich erstmalig zu einem Konsti-tuierenden Workshop am 11. De-zember 2015 im Haus der Wissen-schaft. Im Januar und Februar 2016 folgten Workshops der drei Projektbe-reiche Machtdifferenzen, Wissensfor-men und Verhandlungspraxen.

Im Sommersemester 2016 organisier-te der Projektbereich Verhandlungs-praxen die Ringvorlesung „Diversity – Geisteswissenschaften – Gesell-schaften: Verhandlungspraxen in widersprüchlichen Kontexten“, für die internationale Referentinnen und Re-ferenten gewonnen werden konnten. Im laufenden Wintersemester 2016/17 findet mittwochs, 18–20 Uhr, die Ringvorlesung „Macht im Wider-spruch“ des Projektbereichs Machtdif-ferenzen statt.

Im Bereich der Vortrags- und Diskus-sionsaktivitäten finden außerdem seit Mai 2015 die WoC-Café-Gespräche statt, in denen insbesondere der wis-senschaftliche Nachwuchs zur inhalt-lichen Mitgestaltung von WoC aufge-rufen ist. Das Koordinationsteam lädt regelmäßig am letzten Dienstag im Monat während der Vorlesungszeit zum Café-Gespräch ein.

Den Auftakt in der Vortragsreihe Words of Contradiction im Juli 2016 machte Prof. Dr. Willard McCarty, der als Professor für Humanities Compu-ting am King’s College London und an der University of Western Sydney forscht. Vortragsthema war „The Con-tradiction of Computing“. Die Lecture Series mit international renommierten Vortragenden findet einmal pro Se-mester statt.

Worlds of Contradiction started as a Collaborative Research Initiative of the Faculties 8, 9, 10, and 12 in three project areas: Power Differences, Forms of Knowledge, and Practices of Negotiation in September 2015. Since then, an interdisciplinary association of scholars from all career stages is pursuing the development of the re-search field Contradiction Studies.

This not only includes logical contra-dictions in the sense of the mutual exclusion of two propositions, but also Humanities’ perspectives on con-cepts and phenomena that are co-existent as contradictions in culture and history. Contradicting as the prac-tice of talking back is in the focus of WoC’s interests, as well.

On November 26, 2015, the Collabo-rative Research Initiative celebrated its inaugural event with a guest lec-ture titled “Negotiating Human Identi-ties via Genetics” by sociologist and philosopher Prof. Dr. Christine

Hauskeller (University of Exeter, UK) which was followed by a reception. The researchers participating in WoC, the WoC Plenum, gathered on De-cember 15, 2015, for the first time for a Constitutive Workshop at the House of Science. In January and February of 2016, the three project areas Power Differences, Forms of Knowledge, and Practices of Negotia-tion commenced their work with three workshops.

During the summer term 2016 the lecture series “Diversity – Humani-ties – Societies: Practices of negotia-tion in contradictory contexts”, organ-ized by the project area Practices of Negotiation and featuring internation-al guest speakers, was held. In the current winter term 2016/17, the lecture series of the project area Power Differences is taking place every Wednesday, 6–8 pm. A further form of discussion is the WoC Café Talks with their inaugural

session in May of 2015. These events are aimed at early-career researchers especially to participate in shaping WoC’s research profile. The Café Talks take place every last Tuesday of the month during the teaching term.

In July of 2016, in the lecture series Words of Contradiction, com-

menced with a lecture by Prof. Dr. Willard McCarty, Professor of Hu-manities Computing at King’s College London and professor at the Universi-ty of Western Sydney. The subject of his talk was “The Contradiction of Computing”. The lecture series Words of Contradiction with internationally

Vom 9. bis 11. Februar 2017 findet die internationale und interdisziplinäre Konferenz Contradiction Studies: Mapping the Field an der Universität Bremen statt. Das Programm umfasst 46 Vorträge von Kolleginnen und Kol-legen aus 14 Ländern weltweit. Für Keynote-Vorträge konnten folgende renommierte Forscherinnen und For-scher gewonnen werden:

Prof. Dr. Jane Burbank (New York University, USA): „Contradic-tion, Ambiguity, Multiplicity, Du-plicity: How to Think about Rus-sian Law“ Prof. Dr. Barbara Schmenk (University of Waterloo, Kanada): „Governmentality and the Auton-omous Subject: Persistent Con-tradictions in Philosophies of (Language) Education“ Dr. Stefan Müller (Universität Du-isburg-Essen): „Contradiction as an Answer“

Ein weiterer namhafter Kollege ist angefragt. Die Diskussion soll in drei Sektionen („Fields of Contradiction“, „Structures of Contradiction“, „Prac-tices of Contradiction“) dem Ausloten und der inhaltlichen Konturierung des Forschungsfeldes Contradiction Stu-dies dienen. Alle interessierten Bre-mer Kolleginnen und Kollegen sind eingeladen, sich an den Diskussionen zu beteiligen.

On February 9–11, 2017, the interna-tional and interdisciplinary conference Contradiction Studies: Mapping the Field will take place at the University of Bremen. The program includes 46 papers by colleagues from 14 coun-tries world-wide. The following dis-tinguished researchers have agreed to address the conference in keynote talks:

All interested researchers at the University of Bremen are invit-ed to participate.

Neue Buchreihe „Contradiction Studies“ gegründet New book series “Contradiction Studies” created

Worlds of Contradiction hat die Publi-kationsreihe „Contradiction Stu-dies“ als interdisziplinäre, deutsch- und englischsprachige Publikations-plattform für Forschung zu Wider-spruch beim Verlag Springer VS be-gründet. Es sind sowohl monographi-sche Schriften als auch Konferenz-publikationen und thematische Sam-melbände vorgesehen. 2017 erscheinen. Der Band versam-melt grundlegende Beiträge zur theo-retischen, methodologischen und ge-genstandsbezogenen Reflexion von Widerspruch und Widersprüchen in geisteswissenschaftlicher Forschung. Weitere Bände zu den Ringvorlesun-gen und zur Tagung „Historizität des Widersprüchlichen“ (Oktober 2016) sind bereits in Planung. The lead volume of the series, Con-tradiction Studies: An Interdiscipli-nary Approach, edited by Gisela Febel, Julia Lossau, Ingo H. Warnke, and Norbert Schaffeld, is in prepara-tion and is scheduled to be published in the late summer of 2017. This vol-ume assembles ground-breaking con-tributions on the theoretical, methodo-logical, and subject-related reflexion of contradiction(s) in Humanities fields of research.

Further books to be announced are the volumes documenting the past and current lectures series as well as the conference “Historicity of the Contra-dictory” (October 2016).
