1 Read the article about the fires in Australia. Then answer the questions below.

Early in February 2009 Australia was hit by the worst !re disaster in the country’s history. "e !re destroyed large parts of the forest and bush in the southeastern state of Victoria and spread* quickly north of the state’s capital Melbourne. Before the !res broke out, the weather was unusually hot with temperatures in the 40s."e !res destroyed many houses and le# thousands of people without homes. More than 200 people died because they were trapped by the !re before they could get out. Unfortunately, rescue teams were not able to help them. Fire!ghters from all over the country were $own in to help !ght the !re. "ey worked day and night. But the !res couldn’t be controlled because of the heat and the strong winds. Some places, such as the small town of Marysville, were trapped in the !re and completely destroyed. Only 12 out of 200 houses were still standing when the !re was !nally extinguished*. Some residents* returned to their homes to look around a#er the !re. All the buildings in town were destroyed. "e post o%ce was gone and their school was also burnt to the ground. More than 100 people, from a town of just 550, were killed in the !res. One man managed to survive in his basement*. He had stored* food and water there. His car, which was parked in the garage, melted because of the heat of the !res. It is a miracle that he survived. Police believe that arsonists* started some of the !res. But because of the very hot weather, the !res could have been the result of lightning, too.
