Henley SLSC – Annual Report – 2019/2020 Page 1
President’s Foreword
On behalf of the Henley SLSC Board of
Management, we are pleased to present the
2019/20 Annual Report to our members, formally
outlining and documenting all of our amazing
achievements for the season.
Unfortunately, the 2019/20 season will be forever
remembered for the unusual and tragic events that
saw extreme heat and devastating bushfires ravish
our country in December 2019, and then finished
ever so abruptly with the outbreak of the
Coronavirus-COVID19 in March 2020.
The outbreak of the virus meant both the 2019/20
State titles and Australian titles were all cancelled.
The Australian Government declared all sporting clubs, bars and restaurants to close and
the entire national was shut down and social-distancing was implemented for several
weeks.
Despite the abrupt end to our season, the one thing that unites us is our love for surf
lifesaving and our community; for that reason, we have so much to be proud of. First and
foremost is winning SLSSA Club of the Year 2019, the first time the Henley SLSC has
won this award. Every Henley Club member should also be very proud, as this award is
recognition of everyone’s collective contribution and dedication to our Club values: FIRST
– Family, Integrity, Respect, Safety and Teamwork.
Henley won a number of other SLSSA State awards this season: 2019 Community
Education Program of the Year for our Snippers program led by Sue Mitchell, Becca
Woods and their amazing team of helpers. Roy Menner shared the 2019 Assessor of
the Year (with Kate Perry) and Cooper Forest won 2019 Lifeguard of the Year.
Congratulations to Sue, Becca, Roy and Cooper who worked very hard all season and are
very worthy recipients of their awards.

In addition to these SLSSA awards, the Henley SLSC won two industry awards from Clubs
SA: The 2019 Club of the Year (medium) and Club Chef of the Year (Jason Olivier).
Our club cook Kang Ho Shin (Ho) was also a finalist as Club Cook of the Year. This is the
second time Henley has won the Clubs SA award, having won Surf Club of the Year in
2017. These awards recognise Henley’s ongoing commitment to superior customer
service within our commercial business and were judged by an external group of judges.
Congratulations to Steve, Jason and all of our staff on winning these significant industry
awards.
Chef Jason and Venue Manager Steve, receive the Clubs SA Awards.
In October 2019, we saw the Henley Youth Incentive Program (HYIP) send our first group
of successful youth applicants to the Maroochydore SLSC to spend a week training and
patrolling alongside highly skilled and experienced coaches, trainers and lifesavers in
challenging surf conditions. The group of eight were chaperoned by Henley members –
Peter Stubbs and Nikki von Bertouch.
The group returned not only physically fitter, but with a whole new level of enthusiasm and
surf experience that has not only seen them set personal goals, but they have each helped
the club with a number of new initiatives for improvement. Members of the HYIP program
were invited to share their experience and feedback with the Board of Management
including a brief presentation to our sponsors at the annual sponsor’s dinner and to the
broader members at our season opener. Unfortunately, the 2020 trip was cancelled due to
COVID19 but we are aiming for another trip in October 2021. This is an important
investment into our club’s future and its future leaders, so we are very excited to see who
will take part in HYIP 2021.
Sadly, we lost one of our own long respected
leaders and life members, Tom Jennings in
September 2019 at the respectful age of 92.
Tom joined the club in 1940 and held just
about every position in the club including Club
Patron, President, Secretary and Treasurer and
certainly played an integral role in shaping the
Henley SLSC that we all love today. RIP Tom.
Henley SLSC – Annual Report – 2019/2020 Page 3
As we sign off on what can only be described as a very strange, challenging but also
rewarding year, I want to acknowledge and extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to the
hard working Board of Management - Mark Travers (Vice President), Carly Lutze
(Secretary), Sue Mitchell (Finance Manager), Chris Fuller (Club Captain) and Matthea
Malcolm (Surf Sports Manager).
The challenges of this season has seen this passionate and dedicated team of volunteers
giving up hours of their personal time every week to ensure that the Henley SLSC meets
all of its obligations, stays financially viable and implements the processes and procedures
that will be necessary to lead this award-winning Club into the future.
To all of our volunteer committee coordinators, trainers, assessors, junior committee,
AGLs, coaches, patrol captains and patrolling members, you are the life blood and the
backbone of this club. We can’t be the club we are without you. So, on behalf of the
Board of Management, we thank you for choosing the Henley SLSC as your surf family and
we look forward to a bigger and brighter season ahead.
Finally, to every club member, you are the glue that keeps this club together. The Henley
SLSC is your club but we are much more than just a surf club, we’re a community. Thank
you for your support.
Bring on 2020/21!

Club Captain report
Congratulations to all our patrolling members for another
successful and safe season.
During the season we patrolled for 4123 hours. This included
quite a few extra hot weather patrols very early in the season,
as summer hit us early. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we
were unable to patrol for the last 3 weekends of the season
which included Easter.
During the season we performed 3 rescues:
1. Three members in the gym noticed a young couple jump
off the jetty in a blow-up pool toy and proceeded to be blown
North by a very strong wind.
They were chased down and bought to shore about 500 metres north of the Henley jetty. This
happened on Father’s Day, a reminder to stay vigilant at all times.
2. A member of the public became stranded on the sand bar as the tide came in. A patrolling
member swam out with a tube and returned them safely back to the beach
3. This was a rescue of one of own club members who went into cardiac arrest during a
proficiency session on the beach. Fortunately, this member has made a full recovery and
hopefully will be back patrolling next season. His fellow members did a great job that day and
were highly praised by SA Paramedics on site and the SLSSA Duty Officers, for their early
intervention. This is a perfect example of why we should always be prepared and ready when on
Patrol. You never know when something is going to happen!
I would like to thank the Operations Committee for their work and support during the season
Claire Burke Life Saving Service Manager

Roy Menner Chief Instructor

Cooper Forest Youth Advisor
Ed Gates and Gary Ashton Youth Coordinators
A special thank you to Jane and Kirsty for their efforts over the last two seasons running our
juniors’ program. This role is a massive undertaking and they have done a great job.
By the start of season 2020 we should have taken delivery of a new Achilles IRB. The Zodiac
that we purchased a couple of years ago is no longer non-SLSA compliant and as a result we
were issued a refund, which went towards the purchase of a new Achilles.
Henley SLSC – Annual Report – 2019/2020 Page 7
Along with this the club has also purchased a new dedicated and roadworthy boat trailer for our
IRB’s. This will allow us to complete our carnival responsibilities along with IRB Crew and Driver
training, most of which must be done on the south coast.
It will have the capacity to carry two IRB’s, two motors, fuel and other accessories. No more
damaged IRB’s from transporting them on box trailers. Thank you to the 1913 Bachelor’s Club
for the generous sponsorship which allowed us to acquire the trailer. We are also looking at
updating the IRB beach trailer. Stay tuned.
A huge thankyou to all our members that volunteer their time to do patrols, water safety, sit on
committees and help in any way possible. Your help and dedication is invaluable. Without you
this club could not exist. Keep up the great work.
Looking forward to season 2020.
Cheers

Life Saving Services Manager report
Our patrols this season ran from Saturday 12th October and
finished early due to obvious reasons on Sunday 22nd March.
Thank you to every member who patrolled this season and a
special thanks to our Patrol Captains who once again worked
so diligently.
The Patrol Captains were Chris Fuller, Jake Fitzgerald, Olivia
Parker, Steven Horsman, Mark Travers, Dale Atkinson,
Katherine McDonald, Rebecca Forest, Peter Oborn, Gerard
Codd and Joseph Loielo. Many thanks to you all!
We patrolled a total of 4123 hours at Henley during the 2019/20 season. Three members
completed greater than 50 hours on patrol and 20 members completed 30 hours or more.
These figures represent significant contributions and we are very grateful for the individual
efforts.
The 2019/20 Life Saving Services Committee was:
Darren Hocking ATV Officer
Roy Menner Chief Instructor
Tim Cavanagh & Scott Mather IRB Officer
Kylie Stanton & Cat Balfour First Aid Officer
Thank you for all your work this season.
Our patrol teams all displayed exceptional professionalism and performed their duties to a very
high standard. As well as the rostered patrols, many members volunteered extra time to provide
water cover at events such as end of school break-ups and open water swims. It is a great
reflection on the Club to be getting involved in so many community events.
I look forward to seeing you all again for the 2020/21 patrolling season. Please keep up the
excellent effort with attending patrols and remaining vigilant and professional at all times. A final
reminder - if you are unable to attend a rostered patrol, you are required to organise a suitably
qualified substitute. Congratulations on a successful season.

Chief Instructor report
Although cut short by the lockdown, the club still put through a
large number of members for various awards.
The training of members and potential members is a huge time
commitment from trainers. For example, to take a Bronze
Medallion group through to their assessment takes 20-60 hours.
So last season’s Bronze courses took a minimum of 100 hours.
Without this commitment from trainers we wouldn’t have any
members therefore no club – it is as simple as that.
Thus, on behalf of our club I thank our trainers Tim Cavanagh,
Chris Fuller, Sue Mitchell and Behzad Pourdarab.
Also, Andrew Kelly who helped with various groups throughout the season.
My thanks also to the teams at the On The Same Wave program, Nippers, Snippers and the
WILTJA program for the training they provided and provide every season.
What makes these people’s effort even more noteworthy is that all of them fill other time-
consuming roles in our club, which makes their contribution to training even more meritorious.
To the people who have gained their awards, Congratulations – not just on gaining an award but
continuing a tradition that is quite unique to Australia. That is volunteering. And not only do you
volunteer many hours of your time but you also pay an annual fee to do this.

Surf Sports Manager report
New to the role this season, I firstly want to thank the many people
who have been patient with me while I learn the ropes, those who
have given me great tips and advice, and who have worked so
hard for Henley athletes to train, compete and generally enjoy
being active.
While not new to sport by any means, the surf sports scene has
much to navigate and become familiar with. I still have much to
learn, but with a dedicated team working together, Henley can be
optimistic about supporting members and competitors to enjoy
sports in its many forms, from personal fitness to competition.
Surf Sports Committee
Volunteers within the Surf Sports Committee have continued to build on the work in previous
years, and this season we strengthened the Committee with several new roles – see below for
the current committee members:
Ski Coordinator: Peter Stubbs
Swimming Coordinator: Andrew Lanyon

All of these roles are important: Coordinators organising training; registrars entering detailed
information into portals; supporting of new families to the somewhat intimidating environment of
a surf carnival; connecting Juniors with Seniors/Masters; ensuring we have enough officials on
the beach at a carnival; supporting athletes in the gym or boot camp sessions. Together and
focussed we can continue to grow the enthusiasm for going fast in and/or on the beach and
water!
Club Champs fun

A few events of note from the broader Surf Sports perspective:
Club Swims
The club swims, on most Saturdays throughout the season, are a highlight for me. It is the only
club event we can do together as a whole club family. We can be fast or slow, it helps us stay
strong in the water for our lifesaving skills, and is just a lot of fun. From juniors to us oldies, we
all have a chance to win this handicap event. Thanks to all the patrols throughout the season
who have provided water cover for our growing numbers. And thanks to Andrew Lanyon for his
coordination and recording of this important club event. It is wonderful to see parents and
grandparents encourage their youngsters, who may be nervous to start with and triumphant as
they round the second buoy and head for the beach.
Club Championships
We had a great turnout this year for a new format of Club Championships. Competitors
completed an “open book” Theory component before the event, which covered Lifesaving, First
Aid as well as club culture, our community programs and personal values. And then it was a
very full and intensive “once off” 3-hour Saturday afternoon as all competitors completed the
various challenges. Thanks to Official extraordinaire Phil Hogan for playing Chief Starter, Pete
Stubbs, Julz Kouts, Layan, David Cassidy, Gary Tredrea and Sarah Keenihan for organising,
coordinating, judging and recording on the day. This year we introduced 1st, 2nd and 3rd place
Awards for Under 17’s, Seniors and Masters, both male and female, and we will build on this
event for next year.

Bushfires and Batemans Bay
A small team of enthusiastic competitors trekked across to the east coast for Henley’s first ever
entry into the George Bass Surf Boat Marathon, an event in which surf skis and surf boats
compete in a 7-day event from Batemans Bay to Eden. I was in touch with Darren Hocking
(Hocko) and crew as they drove across after Christmas, ready for the start on 29th December.
There is a great website which had me “dot watching” over the first two days, and it was very
exciting to see the live progress of the various clubs’ crews. We were aware of some bushfires
close to the area, which were also evident in the hazy skies in the photos being sent back for
posting via multimedia for Henley members. Henley was well positioned and looking forward to
Day Three, when the website announced that Day Three would be cancelled. Within hours the
whole event was called off, and pictures started to emerge of people stranded on the beach with
a background of orange and black skies. I had some frantic communication with Hocko, who
warned that he would soon lose coverage, letting us know that the crew was safe. We all know
what happened after that, as much of Australia was engulfed in fire. Please see Tim Cavanagh’s
report on page 65 for a detailed description from the perspective of the Henley members who
changed gears from competition to community service at this crucial time. We are very proud of
you all. Thank you.
States, Aussies, Worlds... and COVID19
Henley Masters competitors were the only athletes who had the opportunity to compete in
States, just two weeks before everything changed. As we know The COVID19 pandemic shut
down almost everything in the world, from travel, the Olympics and any event where people
usually gather. This affected States for our Juniors and Seniors, Aussies and Worlds (planned
for Italy and with several of our Masters already entered.) It was heartbreaking to witness the
disappointment of our athletes. While we all knew it was the right thing to do, it was difficult for
all who had trained so hard for States and Aussies. It was heartening to see however, after short
break, that most competitors began training again, firstly on their own, then in pairs, small
groups, and then back to larger groups as restrictions ease. In the end Henley athletes love their
sport – and will continue to enjoy it.
We look forward to an active and fulfilling Surf Sports Season for 2020/2021.

Henley SLSC – Annual Report – 2019/2020 Page 24
Board coordinator report
The 2019/2020 Surf season kicked off with winter training
back in June with the Semaphore board squad as we
welcomed all the new under 14s to the group. It was another
successful year of training at the lake as we saw an increase
of numbers with 35 people at a Wednesday night board
session which was great to see.
As a collective group we are still working closely with the
Semaphore surf group and will continue to train, race and
share a tent with them on the beach into the future.
As a means of facilitating growth and participation, we regularly involved everyone in a coast
session down to Middleton and also Southport, which is the best way to learn surf skills and
develop confidence as an athlete and for someone who is learning. We regularly used the surf
trailer two to three times per week with a full trailer of boards, sometimes not having enough
room for people to fit them on, which demonstrates we are developing and growing in the board
area.
The surf calendar season brought us 5 surf carnivals which were all held down the mid coast.
We had competitors from all age groups through u14s to the Opens, where we had a
competitive representation in the board area. In many age groups we had Henley and
Semaphore competitors fighting it out in the top 4 across most of the age groups which
demonstrates that the training and development of our junior competitors is working.
Unfortunately, the Surf season was cut short due to the current circumstances so we were
unable to compete at the 2019/2020 state championships. This year we had a number of
athletes that were in the running for medals in the individual boards as well as the board relays
in the junior ranks, where we had a strong representation of Henley competitors. Although the
outcome was disappointing, we have used it as an opportunity to continue training and stay fit
ready for the 2020/2021 season.

Ski Coordinator report Who would of thought at the start of the 2019/2020 surf
season our year would have ended the way it did?
We have had surf carnivals postponed or cancelled due to
cyclonic seas and stingers but never a pandemic, which
effectively ruled out the business end of the season. For all
involved it was a huge disappointment and we all felt
deflated, however this won’t last and we can ready
ourselves for a bigger and better 2020/21, culminating in
the Aussies on the Sunshine Coast.
The ski section keeps getting stronger and stronger with good numbers from under 17 through
to masters, both male and females. Add to that the regular beginner sessions, Henley’s future is
looking bright. With a little more encouragement there is a good, strong group of under 15s
ready to step up and have a go.
We started the season with a solid pre-season. Our program once again mapped out by David
‘Fooz’ Foureur. That led onto local carnivals in November and December. A cold and windy
Moana a complete contrast to a picture-perfect day at Southport a couple of weeks later. Add
to that a 2 to 3-foot wave made it a good day out.
Our under 17 and 19s represented the club with distinction in a round robin format, before
competing in team events. With the season cut short they unfortunately couldn’t show their true
potential. Your time will come, keep up the good work.
Finally, I would like to thank Steve Forest, once again my mainstay when it comes to repairs and
maintenance. Also, for storing the gear trailer at the family business premises.
Phil Hogan a fantastic supporter/ organiser. Whether that be transporting gear, tent setup,
officiating or organising accommodation with Trish, for us, the unorganised group.
BOM for your ongoing support and the Surf Sport Committee.

Surf Boat Coordinator report
We began the season with a squad training for the George
Bass Marathon, with long distance training in mind on rolling
seats. Our first real hit out was around Delfin Island Row,
which we took out comfortably.
At this stage we had the Mackdogs, Dirty Birds, Wildcats,
and U23 crew The Falcons on the water, but with injuries
and other problems it was going to be hard to keep it that
way
Robe was its usual fun carnival with Henley crews placing
well. Unfortunately, due to injury the Wildcats were unable
to fill a crew.
Goolwa was next, the Wildcats won in their first outing with a couple of new rowers showing
potential. Henley Mackdogs then hit the road to the south coast of NSW to compete for the first
time in the George Bass marathon. They set up camp at the Batemans Bay SLSC. This was a
logistically challenging event, requiring more support than Henley had. It was a steep learning
curve for all. Having only seven rowers made it difficult as the guys had to row longer sessions
with less rest during the event. The first leg was from Batemans Bay to Moruya, this was a 31km
leg. The Mackdogs placed third in the open a satisfying result.
The next day was Moruya to Tuross Heads, this was 19km. It was more a sprint than a
marathon, rowing through and past bomies and reefs, with a couple of near miss situations to
catch runners/swells and maxing out at 22kmph. Never a dull moment! Placing third again,
showing great heart having come from 6th. Only Moruya and Bulli in front of us and Coogee
keeping us honest in 4th.
Early the next morning we awoke to darkened skies and smoke. We were notified that the event
had been cancelled due to the bushfire emergency. The Batemans Bay SLSC Club Captain,
Anth Bellette came and met with us to let us know that the club was an evacuation centre and
that it would be filling up with people sheltering from the bushfire. We cleared our gear out of
the club and offered to help in any way possible. What ensued was unbelievable. The George
Bass team stepped up and offered assistance and showed the strength and depth of Surf Life
Saving members and making lifelong friends with the Batemans Bay SLSC. When it was safe to
leave, we made our way back to SA.
In mid-January there was only two other state team selection carnivals, and Henley only had
limited crews compete after that as there was only the two interstate events left before the virus
shutdown. The Mackdogs competed in Portland, Victoria in the VIC open and came equal first
after 4 exciting races against quality opposition.
The Big Row was tackled in difficult (to say the least) conditions. A big thank you to all rowers
and support crew and the Stansbury Bowling Club for an excellent meal on the Friday night.
Moving on to the ASRL Open in Mollymook, the Mackdogs moved up a gear. With many trips
down the south coast and a heavy focus on starts and turns, this proved to be the perfect
catalyst for making the finals on Sunday. The ASRL Open was met with difficulties from the get
go, a nearby cyclone meaning only one thing- massive surf!
Henley SLSC – Annual Report – 2019/2020 Page 27
On Friday morning, Huey was sending in well-timed and consistent 4-foot sets, these built to 6-
foot midafternoon. This caused some carnage in the Master’s events and the Interstates were
postponed.
The final race of the day was a repechage to remember with two simultaneous side by side
candlesticks to end the day. The following day was moved to Long Beach due to some 10
footers breaking at the northern end of Mollymook beach. A 2-3-foot shorey was deceptive as
some boats got smashed. The Mackdogs only had one race and won to advance to the finals on
Sunday, held back at Mollymook. Mackdogs took second in the quarter finals and advanced to
the semi’s, where they placed 4th- just missing out on making the final.
State Masters boats saw the Henley Mackhogs retain their title in the 160 male.
Reserve crews - Peter Oborn
Pete Oborn was sweeping two reserve crews, getting them ready for State Titles (which, of
course, didn’t eventuate). With his sweep ‘trainer wheels’ still firmly fastened to the side of the
sweep oar. Pete was very grateful for the ongoing support and guidance offered by Hocko,
Fitzy, and Stefan Starkey.
Reserve Men consisted of Rob Frick, Matt Coorey, Gianni Loielo and Joey Loielo. This crew
started to come together after a few boat sessions, but are looking primed to take on the
2020/21 season with gusto.
Rowing in the Reserve Women was Isabella Coldwell, Nic Foura, Olivia Parker and Bianca
Parker. The pedigree of the rowers in this crew (all being Hocko and Fitzy trained) is
unquestionable. It will just be a matter of getting them back in the boat together for 2020/21.
The Reserve crews were united by both having a pair of siblings, highlighting that Henley truly is
a family club.
More so than in recent seasons. Reserve rowers were transitioning from Uni studies and/or
casual jobs to career roles (e.g. Physiotherapist, engineer, 2 x paramedics, etc). This impacted
on training availability and the struggle of getting 5 people and a boat in the same place at the
same time was real. Roll on 2020/21.
A special mention for Ross Hamilton being selected to represent SA in both the ASRL state
team and the senior men coxless 8 / Kings cup crew in the same season

The weekly Saturday swims are held to encourage
members to improve their swimming skills, fitness and in-
water safety.
The swims were well supported this season, and the good
weather throughout summer meant we held swims on 14
Saturdays. The average number of swimmers per week
was 32, and a total of 144 different swimmers did at least
one swim. This included 87 proficient, qualified members
and 57 non-proficient or unqualified members including 32
junior members.
Points were awarded each week for participation (2 points) with bonus points for the first 6
places on handicap (6 down to 1).

Gym Coordinator report
The gym area was again busy with club patrolling
members taking advantage of our well-equipped facility
overlooking the coast from West Beach to Grange.
It was noticeable that gym users are now preferring early
mornings and during the day to avoid the busy nights for
their workouts.
Before the COVID-19 restrictions came in, the group
sessions of Boxing/Bootcamp remained popular. Saturday
morning boxing (equal parts fitness/social gathering) has
been going for over 10 years.
From memory the only cancellations have been extreme weather or a winery tour! Thanks
Steve Horsman and Ged Codd for running the classes when I was away.
Thanks to Beck Forest for organising the Christmas break-up this year that was well-attended by
the fitness session crew.
The Saturday boxing group were able to contribute towards hoodies and tee shirts for the
'Henley Youth Incentive Program’ group's development trip to Maroochydore.
We held a summer solstice swim to go with the winter one last June. Horrendous conditions
prevailed for the swim around the jetty but the 9 swimmers were able to get it done! The winter
solstice was also popular on June 21st, with quite cold and windy conditions for the swimmers.
Everyone managed to get around with a smile on their face!
An enjoyable social event was held at Chicco Palms during the season. Thanks to Bec Codd for
organising.
The club generously donated its space to Cosmic Yoga to hold a Silent Night event which raised
over $5000 towards SA bushfire relief.

Junior Operations Manager report
Well, it’s a very different report I
am writing for this Nippers
season. It feels a bit incomplete to
write it as there is a lot of
unfinished business with the
abrupt and sudden end to all of
our seasons thanks to COVID-19.
This season we had around 230
active Juniors and 70-80 Nippers
representing Henley at our
carnivals.
We started the season with a new initiative that we hope will continue as our legacy for the club.
The under 13 Nippers were invited to participate in a Leadership program, ‘Surf’s Up’. The aim
was to not only give the U13s a challenge and responsibility, but also provide a platform to
develop their understanding of leadership, assist in setting some individual leadership goals for
the season against the Henley ‘FIRST’ values, and orient the Nipper of the Year award process
towards demonstration of the Henley values. It has provided the Nippers with avenues and
direction towards how they could be an influencer at the club - whether through competition
skills, lifesaving, community involvement, diversity and empathy - among other skills and
attributes.
We had six nippers participate in the inaugural workshop, kindly led by Kristian Rawlings - a
huge thank you to volunteering his time, skills and expertise to the group. After the workshop,
these nippers - Brayden McKenzie, Cooper Bray, Nathan Kovacic, Dylan Turner, Amelia Davis
and Madi Hawke - presented to an independent panel kindly of Club Captain Chris Fuller, Chief
Instructor Roy Menner and Kristian Rawlings, on their own individual call to action plans for the
season based on Henley values of Family, Integrity, Respect, Safety and Teamwork. Reports and
feedback from the panel were how impressed they were with the group’s motivation,
enthusiasm and willingness to give it a go, and the variety of ways they each saw themselves in
a leadership capacity. All of their determination and commitment to the role was demonstrated
throughout the season and it is a credit to them all - the Nippers from the other age groups
really appreciated their interactions and seemed to embrace their presence and friendships.
Henley SLSC – Annual Report – 2019/2020 Page 33
At the end of the season, three nippers decided to represent to the panel of President Rae
Lawson and Roy Menner on what they had done for the Nippers and whole club as leaders. We
are thrilled to announce that Brayden McKenzie and Amelia Davis were chosen as our Henley
representatives for the Nipper of the Year award. Congratulations to you both and we are
certain all of the U13’s will go on to continue to fulfil valuable roles in the Henley Surf Life Saving
community.
I think topsy-turvy is the only apt description for our season. Once again, it took a while for the
weather to be kind to us, but we did manage some lovely days in December and January to
keep spirits and enthusiasm high. We had some great fun intermixed with learning new skills
and expanding on our surf education. The Nippers across all age groups demonstrated great
understanding and competence in life saving skills especially around rescue and resuscitation,
and gaining more knowledge around beach safety( big shout-out to Glenn Duncan for his novel
approach to demonstrating dangers of the jetty - although I did have initial trepidation watching
him march a group of U10 onto the jetty!)
It was wonderful to see each week an increasing number of Nippers willing to give the club swim
a go! Not only an individual achievement, but the mate-ship getting each other through it,
stopping to wait for a friend, a reassuring word or a welfare check. Equally as humbling were the
Nippers out on boards supporting the swimmers and those cheering from the beach, as well as
the parents getting in the water to support their kids. Thanks to Andrew Lanyon and Gary
Ashton for your support.
Henley participated in three carnivals - Seacliff, Glenelg and Normanville. It was fabulous to see
the Nippers wanting to challenge themselves and work together as a team, and especially
wonderful to see the excitement of the U8 participating in their first carnivals - well done! Thanks
to Tracy Coad, Henley was able to participate in the Marchpast event at two carnivals. It was a
fabulous opportunity for Nippers to be involved especially those that may not be as strong
competitively, to experience teamwork. Let’s hope we continue to grow in this event in future
years.
Kirsty and I couldn’t do this job without the support of the Junior Committee - thanks to Jacquie
Webb for taking on the role of Secretary and being a whizz at all things admin, always with a
friendly smile. Thanks also to Jillian Klieve and Felicity Cory for looking after membership,
Catherine Booth as Watercover Coordinator, Michelle Hitch, Ella Stratton, and Frank Primerano.
A big shout out to Jane Bray for again guiding new parents through the training for Officials and
co-ordinating our carnival quotas. Thanks also to the club members for their support with
organising and supplying IRB cover for Carnivals.
Henley SLSC – Annual Report – 2019/2020 Page 34
Lastly but by no means least, Travis McKenzie’s tireless role as Competition Co-ordinator (ably
assisted by Katie McKenzie!) - to the internal formatting of club championships and the
relentless process of registering our Nippers for surf awards and carnivals - a completely
thankless job, but we give a huge THANK YOU! Thanks also to our other behind the scenes
helpers-Carly Lutze and Emma Barlow in clothing, our kiosk volunteers and everyone who
volunteered on BBQ days, as well as the staff and support from Steve for the Barefoot Bar.
Thanks also to Steve, Jason and the team with helping with hosting our social events, and our
very popular pre-State Championships ‘Pasta Night’.
Thanks to:
U6: Frank Primerano and Emma Duncan
U10: Glenn Duncan and Bec Findlay
U7: Jen and Joey Frisby-Smith
U11: John Burfield and Toni Shatwell
U8: Rick Daley, Edwina Bennett, Craig
Johnson, Justin Bishop
U12: Lennie Hitch and Andrew White
U9: Marissa Gentilcore and Ben Yolland
U13: Andy Bray and Jane Shanahan-Davis
Also, a huge thank you to Andy Bray, Lennie Hitch, Justin Bishop-Davis, Layan Saadeh and Paul
Maidment for Board and Ironperson training throughout the season! The kids thrived on these
sessions and we saw so much progress made throughout the season because of it.
Unfortunately, we do not have any state title achievements to announce, and given we have not
had our presentation night as yet, we would prefer to hold off on announcing the recipients of
age group and club champions until then.
Kirsty and myself, along with Travis McKenzie are stepping down from our roles with the season
end but wish to thank the entire club for its support of us and the Nippers throughout our
journey. We know someone capable will be stepping into our shoes and has the licence to put
their own spin on things-we will watch with great interest the evolution and growth of the
program - next season from the balcony with a drink!

Youth Coordinator report
The Youth area continues to grow
and be well supported by the
club. This season we saw 12 kids
come through to HET from the
Junior ranks.
The continued focus for this area
is to provide a pathway for the
juniors into the senior ranks.
Emphasis is on engagement,
socialisation and maintenance of
surf skills.
This year it was encouraged that all HET members complete the club swim prior to our Saturday
afternoon. This idea and the creation of some internal competition was extremely successful in
engaging the kids this season.
During the winter months members have kept busy getting themselves upskilled with other
awards such as; SRC, Bronze, IRBC, IRBD and SMAR. Well done on gaining these awards.
Again, we held the popular HET Camp back at Chiton Rocks. The aim of the weekend is to teach
and promote the values of Henley as well as the general surf lifesaving movement. This year the
emphasis was on teamwork and communication. The kids were broken into teams and were
provided with specific tasks for the weekend. Many thanks to all those who helped throughout
the weekend.
Other activities through the season include scavenger hunts, mentoring and training juniors as
well for the U14’s completing their first patrol.
On behalf of Ed and myself, thank you! We have had another successful season and we look
forward to seeing you all on the beach next season. Your enjoyment and engagement in our
wider club community is the reason why we do it.

Community & Diversity Coordinator report
We would like to start this report by firstly
thanking each and every person who
volunteered their time to deliver the great
Snippers, On The Same Wave (OTSW)
and Wiltja programs and the community
beach safety days during the last crazy
and COVID-19 shortened season.
We would also like to thank everyone at
Henley SLSC for their ongoing support of
these really important community programs. Thank you also to the City of Charles Sturt for their
support and encouragement of our Community Programs.
What a season it was!
It started with the Snippers program winning the SLSA Community Education Program of the
Year Award for the 2018-19 season, and as we write this report, our OTSW program has just
been announced as a finalist for the same award for the 2019-20 season. Congratulations, an
amazing effort by all the Henley Team.
On The Same Wave – Program Coordinator Behzad Pourdarab
On the same wave program has been running actively for almost a decade at Henley SLSC.
The aim of OTSW program is to deliver water safety skills, water safety awareness and initial first
aid skills to the newly arrived in Australia who don’t have knowledge about Open Ocean water
and the potential risks around it. The main location of training is at Henley SLSC on Saturday’s
morning (11:00 – 12:00), but there is a backup plan for unexpected cold weather and that is
Immanuel College Sport Centre which has been coordinated by Behzad (Who is employee at
the centre).
Immanuel pool’s manager (Carolyn Veldhyzen) generously let our participants to use their
equipment and pool lanes for free. (We really appreciate their support).
Before start of the season 2019 – 2020 we ran a few meetings with our trainers (Sue and John
Atkinson, David Cassidy, Behzad Pourdarab, Michael Walker) and coordinators (Sue Mitchel
and Roy Menner) to set up a plan, assess and evaluate our thoughts. The outcome of our
meeting was a structured lesson plan with main dates on it. The flyer has been created by Roy
Menner who genuinely offered his time to do the work.
Following the lesson plan increased the efficiency of our training and both parties (Trainers and
participants) found it very helpful. Communicating with our participants, advice any changes
before hand was another achievement to increase the efficiency of our work.
“I like it when you guys send text to us and let us know about where we are going to meet. We
can plan our day and be ready.”, Ajay who has been training with us for almost two years said.
The most important part of our work and following our plan was the outcome. When we
observed the participant’s confidence and water safety knowledge has been increased due to
following a plan and having a structured lesson plan.
Henley SLSC – Annual Report – 2019/2020 Page 38
Our program has achieved a lot especially this year due to following a specific plan, having our
trainers on site regularly and communicating with our participants.
At the end we would like to acknowledge Henley SLSC contribution and support (Letting us
using the club’s facilities, club’s equipment) and especially our trainers who generously gave
their time to train our participants and help them to achieve what they aimed for.
Snippers – Program Coordinator Sue Mitchell
Snippers now in its second season started the season on a high after being awarded the SLSSA
Community Program of the Year 2018-19 and being a finalist at the National level. It was
wonderful to attend the National Awards of Excellence in November 2019 on the Gold Coast and
speak to the other finalists and share the experiences and learn from them as there is some
great programs being run by other clubs in the disability space.
I would like to thank all of the volunteers who assisted this program over the past 2 seasons and
the many members at Henley SLSC who show their support for this amazing group of
participants. A special thank you goes to those junior members who worked with this group
each week. I know our Snippers enjoyed having these Nippers and SRC’s on the beach and in
the water with them. Challenging them and helping them to improve their skills. A special thank
you also to our Patron, Matt Cowdrey OAM MP for his support and encouragement.
All but one of our 2018-19 participants returned this season and we had a couple of extras join.
Some very ordinary weather meant a couple of sessions had to be cancelled and COVID-19
restrictions brought the season to an abrupt end, but this did not diminish the joy of the
participants nor the success of the program. Everyone, volunteers included were disappointed
that we didn’t get to have our carnival and season closure but we hope to have everyone back
on the beach next season.
Some might need a bit of extra encouragement – Snippers and helpers on a 200-metre beach run

Teamwork and confidence got better every week
Getting ready for another great day – the typical Snipper
equipment set up
The Snippers showed great improvement during the season and really did strengthen their skills
and capabilities. There were very many wins and achievements amongst the Snippers this
season and one of these deserves a special mention; Ben, returned this season and showed just
how much he had improved and was well into training in CPR (with some extra support from
Roy) when the season stopped.
Snippers will be looking for volunteers and Nipper and SRC helpers again next season so please
let me know if you would like to help out with this great group.
Wiltja – Henley SLSC supporting SLSSA Indigenous Program – Coordinator Bianca Parker
2019-20 was another great season for the Wiltja Program. Bianca and the team have done a
fabulous job of encouraging, training and building the confidence of this group from the Wiltja
College. The planned day for the Port Adelaide Football Clubs Indigenous Academy had to be
cancelled due to COVID-19. This was so disappointing as the previous sessions hosted at the
club were fabulous days and well received by the participants.
We wish Bianca well now she is residing in Northern Territory and I’m sure the program will miss
her input but will continue to provide a great experience for the Wiltja students.

Sponsorship Coordinator report
Sponsorship is an integral part of providing surf lifesaving services
at Henley Beach. Run solely by volunteers, the Henley SLSC
serves the public by providing a safe beach environment for the
local Henley community.
This comes at a cost and many of these services would not occur
but for the generous and ongoing support of our loyal sponsors, of
all sizes and the ongoing fundraising efforts of the members
themselves.
Sponsorship monies assist with ensuring equipment and training
can be maintained to its highest standard.
The donations in kind and fundraising activities help with lowering the costs of the ongoing
running and maintenance of the clubs’ facilities, and the programs developed for members and
the community. We would not have the club we have today without the long-term support of our
sponsors.
This year, as a result of their support and donations, we were able to raise over $40,000 (a
combination of cash and in kind). The Big Row including the raffle with some wonderful prizes,
contributed well to the overall sponsorship effort and sponsor engagement. We acknowledge
the following list of regular and ongoing sponsors for their generosity, many of whom were
referred to the club by existing members or other sponsors, so a big thank you also to those
people who help us engage and promote the club to a wider audience at every opportunity. This
year, a few sponsors were keen to explore and support specific club programs and events
which will allow for the development of a widening, yet different sponsor base into the future.
However due to the unique circumstances that came with 2019/20, sponsorship money is tight
as businesses themselves struggled through these economically tough times. As a general rule,
sponsors are looking for a return on their investments, or aligning with causes that fit with their
corporate values. So, moving forward we will be revisiting our sponsorship strategies and
agreements to ensure we can provide that value back to our sponsors.
We sincerely thank our 2019-2020 sponsors and look forward to working with them in the
coming season.

Big Row Coordinator report
The Bendigo Bank Big Row 2020 took place on Saturday
1st of February 2020. Bendigo Bank was again our principal
naming rights sponsor, continuing their amazing support
since the inception of this event. This was the 14th year this
event has been held, rowing the surf boat 68km across the
Gulf St Vincent, from Stansbury to Henley Beach.
Due to the success and efficiency of having two surf boat
crews in the 2019 event, it was decided to have two crews
to make the crossing again, which included:
First crew: Jack Jones, Darcy Daviess, Alec Oliver, Damien Derlique and Darren Hocking
Second crew: Rob Frick, Olivia Parker, Dan Murdock, Stefan Starkey, Peter Oborn
Thank you to the amazing support contingency included; Scott ‘Maggs’ Mather, Bianca Parker
(IRB champs), Emma Barlow (all round helper), Lola Barlow, Lenny Hitch, Jamie Hitch, Travis
McKenzie, Brayden McKenzie (school session helpers), Issy Coldwell (first aider) and Chris
Sheehy (bus driver).
Our wonderful support crew and rowers assisted in running the junior program for
approximately 15 school students at the Stansbury Primary School on Friday afternoon.
Unfortunately, due to the unfavourable weather conditions the session wasn’t able to go ahead
on the beach however moved into the classroom for surf education, CPR and first aid sessions.
Special mention to Jamie Hitch and Brayden McKenzie who demonstrated a ‘dry’ tube rescue.
The school session was again hugely successful and they had a fantastic time learning what
Surf Life Savers do.

After an action-packed afternoon, Friday evening saw the Henley crew off to the Stansbury
Bowling Club for a night of great food, lawn bowls and entertaining raffles. A huge thank to the
bowling club for their continued support and hospitality; it is fantastic to be involved in a local
Club who offer so much to the community.
John Butterfield on the ‘Allure’ vessel was our support vessel leader again this year. Having
been involved since the 1st Big Row in 2006, a huge thank you for John’s continued support to
the club. Also supporting the Big Row for another year, volunteering their time and resources
were; ‘Four Seventy’ vessel, David Rawnsley; ‘Iluka’ vessel, Ray Hampson; ‘Andante’ vessel
Geoff Gowing and ‘Salty’ vessel Roger Ashby. This event would not be possible without these
vessels and we cannot thank them enough for their amazing support!
The morning of the 1st of February saw our rowers and support crew up at 4.30am, unsure as to
whether the crossing was going to take place. The weather conditions had worsened overnight
and the Safety Committee of Darren Hocking, John Butterfield and Peter Oborn discussed
options given the unfavourable weather forecast. It was decided to delay departure from
Stansbury until 7am, one hour after the original departure time.

Leaving early on Saturday morning
After the first hard stint of rowing for the first crew which included heavy swell and strong wings,
the second crew made an attempt to change over. Due to conditions worsening and the row
deemed unsafe the decision was made to tow the surf boat until conditions eased. The surf boat
was not stable enough to be towed with no weight, therefore some of the rowers had to sit in it
while being towed. A big shout out to Pete Oborn and Rob Frick who spent most of the journey
taking that gurling job. Our IRB team of Scott ‘Maggs’ Mather and Bianca Parker were also
positioned on a support vessel and the IRB was towed.
In trying conditions, the whole team pulled together to support one another. Unfortunately, the
mighty ocean is powerful and for our Big Row 2020 made it difficult for a smooth crossing. The
boat was still able to arrive back at Henley at 2pm, in the pouring rain. Thank you to the finishing
crew of Rob Frick, Jack Jones, Darcy Daviess, Alec Oliver and Peter Oborn for your courageous
effort and Team Henley spirit!

The after party still proceeded and was well attended with numerous valued sponsors, VIPS and
club members. Speeches were conducted highlighting the continued success of this event
being our major fundraiser. The raised funds were down this year with a total of over $45,000
raised both cash and in-kind. A big thank you to our Sponsorship Coordinator, Alison Gurr who
took on this role for the first year and did a wonderful job. A thank you also goes out to Rae
Lawson for all her efforts in assisting with sponsorship.
Thank you to our sponsors, support vessels and volunteers for their amazing contributions.

Grant Officer report
Henley SLSC acknowledges the support we receive from the Federal and State Government for
grant funding we have received over the 2019/2020 season.
Without a dedicated Grants officer this year, our Finance Manager, Sue Mitchell did an
outstanding job in sourcing and applying for all available grants during the season.
With the on-set of COVID-19 and the forced closure of our commercial business, grants were to
play a very important source of funding to enable us to continue operations once our doors re-
opened in June.
Both the state and federal governments provided funding and relief to support business
operations during COVID-19, the largest being $10,000 from the state government to assist the
club with general revenue during the shut-down.
We also received a SAFECOM grant of $5,000 which was used to fund the cost of our new
Achilles IRB.
The annual Beach Safe Equipment Fund (BSEF) provided by SLSA and to be used for frontline
lifesaving services, also contributed towards the funding of our new IRB.
In addition, we received relief from the City of Charles Sturt, in the form of a 3-month reprieve
from paying the building licencing fee and a small grant to support the re-opening of premises
for the purchase of disinfecting and cleaning supplies.
The details of our successful grants are as follows:
Agency Type Amount Equipment / resource
City of Charles Sturt Club COVID-19
Recovery
$500 Cleaning supplies to ensure
compliance with enclosed club
space sanitising requirements
SA Government – Revenue SA SA COVID-19 Relief $10,000 General revenue

House Committee and Venue Manager’s Report
The 2019-20 season saw another busy trading year which as we
all know was abruptly closed down due to COVID-19 on 23rd
March for almost 12 weeks.
The focus during the year has been two-fold:
1. Improving the overall commercial outcome of our trading
operations.
2. Formulate long-term strategies associated with the care and
maintenance of the building and its related building assets.
1. Venue Trading Operations
Steve and Jason have worked together to develop a stable, hard-working team, with a number
of new team members during the year. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 closure, we have
now lost some staff due to their need to find work elsewhere.
The 12-week COVID19 closure has given us some key learnings from which to build a sounder
commercial base from. These included reduced winter trading hours, revised menus to cater to
the changing seasons, revised function packages, a reduced wine list, tighter stock controls,
remodelling the layout of high and seated tables and the introduction of a new automated
‘Wageloch’ system to better manage our staff hours and subsequently wage costs. The
introduction of the Saturday “Clubbies Breakfast” was another initiative introduced that we hope
will grow in popularity and provide the opportunity for members to catch up within the club
facility. While we have further work to do on developing these initiatives, all aimed at improving
the overall profitability of our trading operations for the future.
The club has hosted many corporate functions over the season including the Sports Chaplaincy
Association, moving their annual dinner from the 36ers Dome to the Henley SLSC. The West
Lakes Rotary, West Torrens Rotary, City of Charles Sturt, Boart Longyear Mining and AGL. All
used our facility for a range of functions, including corporate conferences, dinners, presentation
nights and social events. In addition, we have seen an increase in private functions for
weddings, engagements and 21st birthdays over the year.
A highlight for the season was recorded in October 2019, when our Oceanview bar and
restaurant won industry awards from Clubs SA - 2019 Club of the Year (medium), our Head
Chef Jason Olivier won 2019 Club Chef of the Year and Kang Ho Shin was a finalist for 2019
Club Cook of the Year. These external awards give recognition for all the hard work done by our
staff and making every customer’s experience is a positive one.
Henley SLSC – Annual Report – 2019/2020 Page 47
The primary focus of our team, and particular Steve in his role as Venue Manager, has been on
building our loyal customer base, engaging with them on a regular basis to ensure all customers
feel welcomed and part of our club culture. We have many customers who return on a regular
basis, becoming social members and bringing their family and friends back, which is a great
endorsement for the club.
Despite the abrupt closure, we have a lot to be proud of as a team and I would like to thank
Steve and Jason and all of our hard-working staff for their commitment and dedication.
2. Building and Facility Management
In relation to the building and facility would also acknowledge the support that Phil Hogan has
done to support the development of the Clubs Facility Asset Management Plan. This will be a
key document as we move forward to enable the club to better plan and manage the facility and
its related assets (kitchen facilities, air conditioning, hot water and solar systems, flooring and
lighting, etc) which will inevitably deteriorate and age over time and will need replacement over
the coming years. The plan also provides a base from which to seek funding for future works
under a scheme being established by Surf Life Saving SA.
Phil Hogan, Steve Forest and Dan Moriarty with some assistance from other members such as
Steve Horsman, have all provided valuable input, time and effort by undertaking the numerous
maintenance and asset replacement jobs during the season. Their experience, knowledge and
assistance are very much appreciated.
We have a number of challenges to address over the coming years as we work towards the
first decade in the new building. Continuing to improve the commercial outcomes from our
trading operations will provide the key additional funding required to support the continuing
and planned care and upkeep of the building. The work undertaken over the past year
provides a solid platform from which to achieve both of these objectives.

Finance report
For those who don’t know me, I am a relatively new member at
Henley SLSC but very passionate about the Club and surf
lifesaving. I am a registered Certified Practicing Accountant and
have extensive experience of accounting in Not-for-Profit and
various different commercial sectors.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of
Management, Mark Travers, Steve Parker, Jason Olivier and
Sue Fitzgerald for their support and assistance as I have found
my way in this role.
I would also like to thank all the area coordinators and managers for their patience and
understanding over the last 12 months as the BOM worked diligently to protect the financial
position of the Club. Our number one priority is the financial stability for the long term. For that
reason, a number of new financial processes and procedures were introduced this season.
Unfortunately, the unforeseen circumstances that impacted the entire Australian economy this
year means that our overall finances will continue to be extremely tight for a while longer. Our
goal for the seasons ahead will be to pay down our Club loan so we can be debt free as soon as
possible.
Therefore, we will again be asking all areas to work together to reduce all non-essential
spending and help us find ways to save the Club money where ever possible. This may mean
looking to fundraising as an option for acquiring new equipment.
As a Board, we will continue to seek other funding through grants, sponsorship and other cost
savings through smarter operating and pricing negotiations with suppliers.
Thank you for your support and understanding.
Finance Report
The 2019-20 Financial Report incorporates a 12-month period from 1 July 2019 to 30 June
2020.
The financial position of the club as at the end of the 2020 financial year continues to be strong,
albeit with some big, but not exclusive challenges experienced during the 2020 financial year.
The closing cash position for the Club as at 30 June was $88,128, this compares to the opening
balance position of $44,612.
This increase in the cash position is explained by the following main reasons:
• State and Federal Government COVID-19 grants and Cash Boost response
• JobKeeper payment offsetting wages expense
• GST retrospective balance payments on hold due to COVID-19
• Extension until September 2020 for payment of BAS
• Extension until August for payment of power and gas accounts
• Rent relief given by City of Charles Sturt (3 months rent)
• Loan redraw of $30,000 to provide a cash reserve to support the club during COVID-19
restrictions
Henley SLSC – Annual Report – 2019/2020 Page 49
During the year the Club incurred expenditure on capital items (assets) totalling $32,875
($35,438 in 2018-19). The items purchased included:
Plant and Equipment (including Building related items) $ 19,019
Competition/Lifesaving Equipment (IRB paid for during 2019-20
to be commissioned during 2020-21) $ 13,856
These purchases have to some extent been directly offset by various grants and sponsorships
received during the year in addition to the application of the equipment funding levy, which
raised $16,901 in 2019-20. Seeking specific direct sponsorship for equipment continues to be
actively pursued to ensure that the Club can continue to support equipment requirements into
the future.
As at 30 June 2020 the total book value of non-current assets reported was $3,423,366
($3,431,582 in 2019).
The total income received in 2019-20 was $1,396,657 and was derived from the following key
areas (with comparison to 2018-19):
• Membership – $88,112 or 6.3% ($89,100 or 5.5% in 2018-19)
• Bar / Restaurant Trading Activities – $1,084,363 or 77.6% ($1,377,256 or 86.5% in 2018-
19)
• Grants, Fundraising and Other – $126,404 or 16.05% ($126,404 or 8.0% in 2018-19)
The total income received in 2019-20 was almost $200,000 down from 2018-19 due mainly to
COVID-19 restrictions on the business operations, but also in part reduced sponsorship income
and the ‘season’ being cut short abruptly.
It is noted that the membership figure includes the Building Fund Levy which amounted to a
figure of $16,901 ($24,840 in 2018-19, with the total amount raised to date from this fund,
$191,731).
Funding raised over the year was used in a variety of outcomes including:
• Lifesaving – administration, training, competition and operations of $38,740 ($46,814 in 2018-
19)
• General Operations – bank fees, insurance, lease payments of $39,967 ($42,951 in 2018-19)
• Building maintenance and operations $140,007 ($175,892 in 2018-19)
The Club recorded a net operating profit of $40,053 in 2019-20, which compares with the net
operating loss of $40,406 in 2018-19. The 2019-20 improved result can be attributed to the
following key factors:
1. COVID-19 Cash Boost Funding, JobKeeper payments, State Government COVID-19
Grant and City of Charles Sturt rent relief.
2. Reduced utility expenditure due to club closure
3. Reduced spending in lifesaving services due to COVID-19 closure of facilities and great
restraint on spending by all areas of the club.
Henley SLSC – Annual Report – 2019/2020 Page 50
The trading account result for 2019-20 was a Gross Profit of $57,590 ($89,645 in 2018-19). The
trading outcome for margin of 5.3% compared to 6% (operating surplus of $83,335) in 2018-19.
This result reflects the impact of the JobKeeper receipts, reduced trading and increased costs
but does not take into account any allocation of costs of building maintenance, lease payments
or utility costs.
This trading performance outcome reflects the variability of the nature of the hospitality industry,
and highlights the on-going requirement that time and effort continually needs to be put into
ensuring the trading area of the Club is managed well.
Capital expenditure levels continue to be reviewed and it is likely that we will see an
increased call on building maintenance and plant and equipment replacement/upgrade
expenditure as the building and plant ages.
Club membership provides a strong financial base to support the ongoing operations of the
club and therefore it is imperative that focus is given to member retention and sustainable
member growth.
With 2021 being our final Big Row, we will need to work hard to replace the income stream
that this event generated.
The club (and its finances) has again been well served over the past year by those
members who put in an enormous amount of time on raising funds through a range of
activities (including the Big Row). Well done and keep up the good work!
The retention of a strong cash position, to ensure that the long-term financial position of the
Club is strong, has been a focus for the Board of Management.
The continued support of all Members and Sponsors is essential to ensuring that the Club
achieves this outcome moving forward.
The report is provided for the consideration of Members.

Auditor’s Report
To the Members of Henley Surf Life Saving Club Inc.
SCOPE
I have audited the financial report being the Statement of Financial Performance,
Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Cash Flows, Notes to the Financial
Statements and the Statement by members of the Board of Management of the Henley
Surf Life Saving Club Inc. set out on pages 49 to 59 for the 12-month period ended 30
June 2020.
The Board of Management is responsible for the financial report. I have conducted an
independent audit of the financial report in order to express an opinion on it to the
members of the Club.
My audit has been conducted in accordance with the Australian Auditing Standards to
provide reasonable assurance as to whether the financial report is free of material
misstatement. My procedures included examination, on a test basis, of evidence supporting
the amounts and other disclosures in the financial report and the evaluation of accounting
policies and significant accounting estimates. These procedures have been undertaken to
form an opinion as to whether, in all material respects, the financial report is presented
fairly in accordance with applicable Australian Accounting Standards and other mandatory
professional reporting requirements so as to present a view which is consistent with our
understanding of the Club’s financial position, the results of its operations and cash flows.
The audit opinion expressed has been formed on the above basis.
QUALIFICATION
Given the nature of the operations of the Henley Surf Life Saving Club Inc. it is not
practicable to establish accounting controls over all amounts receivable prior to the issue
of a cash receipt and therefore it is not possible to know whether all income due to the
Club has been received by the Club and recorded in the books of account.
Accordingly, my audit has been limited to the amounts of cash receipts recorded in the
books of account of the Club.
AUDIT OPINION
In my opinion, subject to the above qualification, the financial report presents fairly in
accordance with the applicable Australian Accounting Standards and other mandatory
professional reporting requirements the financial position of Henley Surf Life Saving Cub
Inc., as at 30 June 2020, and the results of its operations and cash flows for the 12 month
reporting period then ended.

HSLSC club values in action
At Henley SLSC we pride ourselves on our FIRST club values and try to live these values in our
club life and personal lives. This season we have had some outstanding examples of members
displaying the club values and we as a club are extremely proud of them.
Bushfire Boaties
Late in 2019 our mens surf boat crew travelled to Bateman’s Bay to compete in the George
Bass marathon, a 7 day, 190km race from Batemans Bay to Eden, NSW. The Henley contingent
consisting of rowers Jono Hersey, Ross Hamilton, David McLeod, Damien Derlique, Colby
Grace, Alec Oliver and Darren Hocking, were assisted by IRB driver Tim Cavanagh and support
crew; Katie Cavanagh, Lindi Duncan, Elodie Derlique and children. The racing began whilst
bushfires raged on the East coast, however was cancelled before the 3rd day due to the extreme
fire danger warnings and the risk to competitors from ash and smoke coming from the mainland.
Our members were staying at the Batemans Bay SLSC and woke up to phone calls and text
messages advising people in the area to evacuate. As fires raged through the local area, large
numbers of locals were forced to leave their homes and flee to the surf club - a designated
refuge centre.
Our club members jumped into action and assisted between 1500 and 2000 people (with
various animals) to set up in the Batemans Bay car park and beach. As fires closed in from all
sides, Club Captain of Batemans Bay Anth Bellette (described by Jono and Tim as ‘amazing’
and ‘a legend’) led a small group of volunteer surf lifesavers to navigate all members of the
community onto the beach. During the whole situation, it was very much a team effort. Led by
Anth, approximately half Henley and half Batemans Bay SLSC members worked together to
help the community. Everyone involved provided support in multiple roles over the duration of
the emergency. As the fire moved dangerously close to the beach, the skills and expertise of
crew members and professional fire fighters Colby Grace and Alec Oliver were much needed.
The group played a critical role in putting out spot fires in the surrounding area and amongst the
local houses.
We were so pleased to hear that all our members and their loved ones were safe, and are very
proud of the help and support they provided to fellow surf lifesavers and the community. Our
members have made lifelong friendships with the locals, both through patrolling in the days
preceding the fires and during the emergency situation itself. The club is extremely proud of
their efforts and flying the Henley FIRST values flag.
