Definitions Selection of current transformers
Ia = starting current of motor Idyn = max. peak current of current transformer ID = cut-off current of fuse Ik = short circuit current (r.m.s. value) In = rated current of motor Ith = short time withstand current P = rated motor power cos = Power factor of motor = motor efficiency
The cut-off current of a fuse with 250 A rated current is for Ik = 25 kA short circuit value: 25 kA (depending from characteristic of fuse for these values, see also above mentioned link to intranet) Thermal stressing of current transformer by the short time current rating Ith is negligible as a result of current limiting by the HV HRC fuses. The current transformer must be capable of withstanding mechanical stress due only to the cut-off current ID. In this connection the cut-off current ID is equivalent to the peak current of current transformer Idyn. Idyn >= ID Ith = Idyn / 2.5 = 25 kA / 2.5 = 10 kA The current transformer must be designed for an Ith of >= 10 kA

rated voltage of network and motor frequency of network rated power of motor rated current of motor required switching cycles based on application of motor in production process power factor cos of motor motor efficiency factor starting current of motor number of starts per hour starting time of motor max. number and rated current of fuses which can be installed in panel when contactor is used, ambient temperature of switchgear room for contactors lower rated lightning impulse withstand voltages across the open contact gap as circuit breakers are required based on
different standards (at 7.2 kV: 40 kV instead of 60 kV, at 12 kV: 60 kV instead of 75 kV)
Additionally to above mentioned key factors protection and primary cable philosophy have to be considered. Protection philosophy is influenced by significance and importance of motor in process while using differential protection relays in combination with circuit breakers or over current protection in combination with fuses and contactors. Due to current limiting function of fuses in combination with contactors cross section of primary cables can be optimized.
Based on above mentioned key factors following advice for selecting contactor with fuses can be given:
Max. fuses which can be installed in contactor panels:
NXAIR switchgear: 7.2 kV: single fuse per phase 1 x 315 A, parallel fuses per phase 2 x 250 A
12 kV: single fuse per phase 1 x 160 A, parallel fuses per phase 2 x 160 A
NXAIR P switchgear: 7.2 kV: single fuse per phase 1 x 315 A, parallel fuses per phase 2 x 250 A
Depending from max. permissible current values of complete contactor panel including fuses with above mentioned ratings in NXAIR and NXAIR P switchgear,
based on 35 C ambient temperature of switchgear ro om,
rated voltage of motor for 7.2 kV application: 6.6 kV
rated voltage of motor for 12 kV application: 11 kV
power factor cos = 0,9
motor efficiency = 0,9
following average power values of motors can be switched with fused contactor units:
7.2 kV: 3000 kW
12 kV: 3000 kW
For higher power values of motors circuit breakers should be checked.

Generally all type tests in accordance to IEC 62271-200 will be made on representative functional units. As mentioned in this IEC it is not practicable to make for all arrangements of switchgear special type tests. Because of the variety of types, ratings and possible combinations of components it is possible in accordance to standard that the performance of any particular arrangement may be substantiated by test data or simulation calculations of comparable arrangements. Due to this and the fact that each switchgear room never will have exactly same dimensions, installed equipment etc., the functionality of this channel system has been evaluated by type tests in combination with simulation calculations.
Following rules for planning have to be considered, see also below shown pictures: Channel should be realized to lateral side or rear side Lateral direction of channel system: end panel (all available typicals) which should be used for adaption of channel does not have busbar voltage transformer resp. busbar earthing switch, ventilated panel is possible Rear side direction of channel system: panel which should be used for adaption of channel does not have busbar voltage transformer resp. busbar earthing switch or ventilation resp. rear side cable box for primary cables coming from above, adaption to one single contactor panel is not possible, but in the middle of two contactor panels. At least one panel of each busbar section (when bus sectionalizer is included) must have one connected channel system to lateral or rearside Length of switchgear and number of busbar device have no impact on configuration of channel system
