HISTORICAL SITE IDENTIFICATION: SETTLEMENT IN PESSAC

This workshop develops the knowledge of the conservation of modern and contemporary architecture. The main goal is to establish a documentation of the work as complete as possible by doing historical research and using the information, photos and plans of the period. In 1923 Henry Frugès, the owner of a sugar industry, is in contact with Le Corbusier and asked him to build a settlement for his employees in Pessac, France. The meeting of these two characters made of Pessac a laboratory for the new architecture. The settlement was supposed to develop minimal housing, cheap serial production and industrialization of the building. Each group studied a building type where we had to try to reconstitute the original plans and demonstrate the changes since the construction. The work was done with the help of the original plans, pictures of the site and the inauguration, letters written between Le Corbusier and Mister Frugès and certainly because of the knowledge of the habitants.

In the second semester, the idea was to imagine an infrastructure for tourists who come to visit the settlement in case of a registration of the work of Le Corbusier in the heritage of UNESCO.On the south part of the plot of Le Corbusier are currently buildings constructed in another period. They are a result of the history of the neighborhood, unrelated to the surrounding architecture of Le Corbusier and witness of a historical stratification. The theme of the project is to reuse these buildings and rebuilt them in their own volume according to the ZPPAUP (French regulations for buildings registered heritage), to accommodate various public programs. The underground extensions allowed us to make links between the existing buildings and to extend the size of the project.The sand present in the region is, after the excavation, reused to cover the ground outside. The vegetation is composed of various pines and dry plants from the region. The buildings are made with a metal construction, covered by a deployed metal sheet with the idea to create light pavilions and also to have a textured facade which represents the sugar industry of Henry Frugès.

The theme of the workshop with Dominique Perrault Architecture is underground architecture. The EPFL campus is like a small town in a big city. However, the program can not be complete without a place dedicated to the spiritual life of students and all other users of the campus. In this workshop we established first a detailed program, then treated the question of the placement and finally develop a project. The word spiritual for us doesn’t necessarily have to be about religion but is about the well-being of the human body, in a physical but also a mental way. We think that a spiritual place in the heart of the EPFL campus must be a dynamic place. It is important that students from different sections can join each other around the same activity so we chose the dance for its sporting and dynamic qualities. Our dance center consists of an auditorium and five rehearsal rooms. These revolve around a main axis. The project integrates the mountainous landscape visible from the site by creating a park with an angular topography.

In this first semester of the Bachelor, we were asked to design an architectural element and to use a wooden base on which our project is being developed.A stair is a construction consisting of a sequence of steps that allow us to climb up or get down to reach a new space. The staircase is a passage, but in this case it’s also generator of space. The steps are covered with a frame which defines the inside as well as the outside. The frames have a flexible point so that in a curve the structure bends itself to allow an expansion of the space and to lighten up the inside. At the same time the opening of the frames offers a view of the path as well as the city. Depending on the shape of the staircase, it can also generate a kind of space by its negative. The plans and sections are all drawn by hand.
