The lyrics to this song are mostly based on Psalm 137,except the last verse (“So may the words of our mouths...”)which is based on Psalm 19. Various versions of the lyricshave been used in different contexts, among them the musicof the Rastafarians, who saw their situation as similar tothat of the Jews in Babylon.
In arranging this tune, we listened to a wide variety ofversions and were inspired largely by Boney M, a disco-inflected group from the ’70s and ’80s, and Juba, a six-partCanadian a cappella group.

Born into a middle-class Jewish family in the suburbs ofMontreal, Leonard Norman Cohen (1934– ) has been calledone of the greatest singer/songwriters of the late 20thcentury. The straight-up folk style of his early work took onshades of various types of rock and cabaret music in the1970s and 1980s, often pairing his trademark gravellybaritone with female backing vocals.

Cohen's lyrics are often emotionally heavy and lyricallycomplex; recurring themes include love and sex, religion,psychological depression, and music itself. His music hasbecome very influential on other singer/songwriters, andmore than a thousand cover versions of his work have beenrecorded. "Hallelujah" in particular has been covered byBono, Jeff Buckley, John Cale (whose version was featured inthe movie Shrek), Allison Crowe, k.d. lang, Rufus Wainwright,K's Choice (live), Bob Dylan (live), Israeli singer NoamPeled—and now, Honorable Menschen!
