Picasso’s baptized name was:Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno

María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Martyr Patricio Clito Ruíz y Picasso

Picasso was born in Spain but lived most of his life in France. He spoke Spanish and his first words were “piz piz” which is a

shortening of the Spanish word for pencil. Picasso lived to be 91 years old. His paintings and sculptures are displayed in

museums all around the world.

Picasso was an abstract painter. He created art that is not the realistic image but instead he used an imaginative and creative way to show the essence of something. Some kids say it weird, twisted

and crazy!

His paintings of faces were asymmetrical meaning both sides are not the same or balanced.

In other words, they were lop-sided!

This is one of Picasso’s Cubist paintings. Cubism is a style of painting where you divide your portrait or object into geometric

shapes. Can you see all the shapes? Can you tell what this painting is?

Sometimes he painted on newspaper

Like this….

And this….

Look at all the colors. Can you tell this is on newspaper????

Is this painting symmetrical?

What do you suppose this is?

Today you get to create an abstract portrait in black lines on newspaper, just like Picasso! Then you get to use chalk

pastels to fill in Cubist shapes in and around the portrait.

This is a Duniway student’s painting. Can you see how they filled the entire newspaper with shapes

and color? Do you see how it’s asymmetrical?
