Inbetriebnahme

Commissioning
Field of application The reference electrode R 503/P or R 503/D is used to create a reference potential when measuring ion concentrations. Together with a WTW ion sensitive electrode of the type 500 it forms a double rod combination electrode.
Filling in the bridgeelectrolyte
1 Unscrew the white screw cap from the bridge electrolyte bottle.
2 Pull off the seal.
3 Screw the white screw cap on the bottle again.
4 Position the spout of the white screw cap upward.
5 While holding the electrode in an upright position push the closing ring (4) downward using your fingers until the filling opening is uncovered (5).
6 Fill the bridge electrolyte through the filling opening (5) using the spout.
7 Shortly press the shaft of the electrode (7) upward against the connection head in order to wet the ground junction (8) with bridge electrolyte.
8 When doing so refill spilled bridge electrolyte.
9 Close the bottle with bridge electrolyte solution: Position the spout of the white screw cap downward.

Conditioning, calibration, measurement
General information
When operating the electrode ensure that
! the filling opening (1) for the bridge electrolyte is open
! the inner junctions (3) are covered with bridge electrolyte
! no air bubbles are in the bridge electrolyte
! the depth of immersion is within the optimum range:
Before measuring
Minimum depth of immersion
The ground junction (4) must be covered
Maximum depth of immersion
Approx. 1 cm below the fluid level (2) of the bridge electrolyte

1 Before use, condition the double rod combination electrode according to the operating manual of the ion sensitive electrode.
2 Remove any air bubbles in the bridge electrolyte by slightly knocking against the shaft.
3 Calibrate according to the operating manual of the meter and the analysis specification.

Interferences
The bridge electrolyte ELY/BR/503 contains K+ and NO3-.
Therefore, it cannot be used for the concentration determination of potassium, nitrates, perchlorates or fluoroborates.
Use the following:
! For NO3- determination: ELY/BR/503/N,
! For K+ determination: ELY/BR/503/K
as the bridge electrolyte (see RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES).
Aging
Please note that every electrode undergoes a natural aging process. The following factors shorten the lifetime considerably:
! Incorrect storage
! Special test samples
! High temperatures
! High changes in temperature
The warranty does not cover damage caused by measuring conditions and mechanical damage.

Maintenance
! Refill any used up bridge electrolyte daily.
! In the case of increased response times carry out the following activities:
– Clean the ground junction with methanol
– Exchange the bridge electrolyte
! Rinse off with water any granulate material on the outside of the electrode.
! Clean the electrode. To do so, open the combination electrode:
CautionNever pull the connection cable of the electrode. The cable might be damaged.
1 Unscrew the knurled nut (1) from the connection head.
2 Put the connection cable into a vertical position.
3 Unscrew the connection head (2).
4 Push the connection head (2) and pressure spring (3) over the connection cable.
5 Remove the protection cap.
6 Push the electrode through the shaft (7).

R 503/P / R 503/D
Storage
Between twomeasurements
Store the electrode in air.
Overnight to oneweek
Put the electrode into diluted aqueous standard solution with the filling opening open. To avoid a contamination of the bridge electrolyte with standard solution, the level of the bridge electrolyte must be clearly above the level of the standard solution.Fill in fresh bridge electrolyte for measurement.
For more than aweek
Remove the bridge electrolyte of the electrode, rinse the electrode with deionized water and dab it dry with a clean paper towel. Store the electrode in a dry place.
