The Oyster Perpetual Explorer, built to meet the demands of professionals,
is the successor to the original Explorer that accompanied Sir Edmund
Hillary and Tenzing Norgay to the sum mit of Mount Everes t. Faithful to its
heritage and unique identity, the Explorer features a Parachrom hairspring
and Paraflex shock absorbers, reaching new heights of chronometric
precision and resistance to extreme conditions.

because its thereMountaineer George Mallory was asked:
Why do you climb Mount Everest?
He replied simply: BECAUSE ITS THERE
On 29 May 1953, the explorers Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, with their
Oyster, took their rst steps on the roof of the world, at an altitude of precisely 8,848 metres.
The rst victorious ascent of Mount Everest. The same year, in a tribute to this historic feat,
Rolex ofcially launched the Explorer model.
jean troilletEco-alpinist. Survivalist. Globe trekker.
Explorer of whats humanly possible.

Helps others seek from life what he so successfully has: to follow their dreams.
setting out to conquer the worldExtreme environments, such as the polar regions, have always been new testing laboratories
for the Oyster watches. In 1971, Rolex broke new ground, in terms of chronometric precision,
robustness, autonomy and legibility, with the launch of the Explorer II.
alain hubertArctic Ocean Traverse-North Greenland,2007:
Three hundred miles from the nearest land,
the Arctic Ocean laps at the edge of the sea
ice, only yards from Alain Huberts feet.
While previous explorers encountered ice
many metres thick, Hubert nds only water
where the Ocean should normally be frozen
into a thick multi-year ice pack. Dogged by
anomalous sea ice conditions, Hubert is re-
peatedly forced to nd an alternative route
across the now open waters. Still 120 kilo-
metres from his goal, each new discovery of
fractured ice leads him to fear for the worst.
14 June 2007: Alain Hubert and Dixie Dan-sercoers 106-day crossing ends, but the
journey is far from over. Hubert continues
his quest to nd the cause of this change in
the ice.
ed viestursHe works with the mountain, not against it.
That may explain how hes conquered 14 of
the worlds tallest peaks, all without supple-
mental oxygen. But climbing also comes
with responsibility, as he says: Getting to
the top is optional. Getting down, manda-
tory.

904l steel
Rolex uses 904L steel for its steel watch cases. 904L is usual-ly reserved for the chemical industry, where maximum resis-
tance against corrosion is essential. 904L marries perfectly
with the other precious metals used by Rolex. A super alloy,
904L is extremely resistant and highly polishable.
the oyster caseVery few people in the world are allowed in-
side a Rolex Oyster. Only authorised Rolex
retailers have the necessary know-how, skills
and equipment to gain access. Hermeticallysealed to the case with a massive torque of
ve newton metres, the back of any Oyster,
as this caseback demonstrates, creates an
environment that protects the movement
from shocks, pressure, dust, water and any
other intrusive element.
the parachromhairspringA watch is only as precise as its oscillator is
regular. Conventional oscillator hairsprings
are made of ferromagnetic alloys, leaving
them vulnerable to magnetic elds and
shocks. After ve years of research, Rolex
created the blue Parachrom hairspring. Craft-
ed from a paramagnetic alloy, it is unaffected
by magnetic elds and up to 10 times moreresistant to shocks. Historically, the unique
blue colour of the hairspring has been a
sign of prestige reserved for only the most
accurate timepieces. Today, it guarantees the
accuracy of your Rolex.

superlative chronometerThe four simple words SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER
OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED engraved on the timepieces dial
mean that the movement of this watch has endured 15
days and nights of testing by the COSC (Contrle Ofciel
Suisse des Chronomtres), an independent not-for-prot
association. To receive COSC certication, a watch must
demonstrate extreme precision in a variety of positions and
temperatures the standard level of quality for every Rolex
Chronometer.
