Geospatial Technology in SAARC Today

Geospatial technology in South Asia is at an impasse. Tremendous potential is waiting to be unlocked across the region for a multitude of applications and users, conceptually, but on the ground we are still mired in using traditional, costly methods of acquiring data. The future outlook is positive though, tempered perhaps by bureaucratic processes and inconsistent investment, but positive all the same. But what technologies can transform the region’s utilization and benefit from geospatial information? Where should limited investment capacity be dedicated to achieve an optimal return? This talk will focus on specific geospatial technologies that hold tremendous promise for South Asia, and how the region can prepare for their impacts.

What technologies can transform the region’s utilization of and benefit from geospatial information? - Geodetic Infrastructure & GNSS - Imaging Technologies incorporated into the surveying and mapping work flow Where should limited investment capacity be dedicated to achieve an optimal return? - Enable efficiency - Unlock private sector innovation and creativity

Corrections Services Aiding the Proliferation of GNSS Global Corrections Service

What is it? – a service that provides real-time data from a global tracking station network along with innovative positioning and compression algorithms to compute and relay satellite orbit, satellite clock, and other system adjustments to the receiver, resulting in the real time high accuracies. These adjustments are transmitted to the receiver via satellite and via IP worldwide.

Transition to productive GNSS

Observations from other large economies – GNSS ‘took off’ as a leading technology for surveyors and mappers

when 1) CORS networks were established & 2) government investment in infrastructure development grew year on year

– SAARC falls directly in this GNSS “Sweet Spot” in the coming years

Falling Cost of GNSS Technology allows additional access

Impact on SAARC? – Enables significant efficiency gains and improves data quality

– Reduces firm-level costs

Merger of Disciplines in the Field and Office

Identifying areas of interest and changes in the landscape using change detection analysis tools

UAV: Photogrammetry in Surveying Workflows

Geodetic Infrastructure, GNSS, and Imaging technologies will revolutionize the current perception of the benefits of geospatial information in SAARC

This change will happen within government and the private sector, followed by huge innovation and creativity in application and value-generation

The biggest transformation in the transition away from traditional methods is MORE information, FASTER work, EARLIER societal benefit, BETTER living!
