Mini EURO Conferences and ORP3 call for proposals

Dear Colleagues, I would like to draw your atten-tion to two EURO initiatives, the Mini EUROConferences and the new ORP3-conferences foryoung people organised by young people.

The Mini EURO Conferences, introduced in 1984are specialised conferences on a particular promis-ing OR theme for a limited audience of specialists.Up to now 11 such conferences were held on themeslike Management and Modelling of Dynamic Sys-tems, Expert Systems, Transportation, Risk Man-agement and many others. For a complete list seethe EURO homepage

http://www.ulb.ac.be/euro/euro_welcome.html

The next Mini EURO Conference is planned forApril 2002 on Decision Support Systems and willtake place in Brussels.

EURO offers financial assistance to the organisersof a Mini EURO Conference: it gives a loan forprinting costs of conference material and it offersfinancial assistance for participants coming fromEastern European countries.

We are looking forward to receiving proposals forfuture Mini EURO Conferences. Any member ofany member society of EURO can make a propos-al for organising a Mini EURO conference. Guide-lines are available from the Secretary of EURO orfrom vice-president 2. These proposals have to beapproved by the EURO Executive Committee.

Moreover, I would like to draw your attention tothe new initiative of ORP3-conferences. The firstORP3-conference will be held from September 26-29, 2001 in Paris. ORP3, the Operational ResearchPeripatetic Post-graduate Programme is intendedas a forum for young OR researchers and practi-tioners to promote scientific and Professionalexchanges. ORP3 is a conference hosted by arenowned European centre of OR. The organisa-tion of this postgraduate programme lies entirelyin the hands of young OR people in the hostingcentre. Proposals for the next ORP3-conferencewhich is planned for 2003 are welcome.

As EURO vice-president 2 responsible for thesetwo initiatives I am ready to give you any adviceand support. My co-ordinates are:

Organisation of a Mini EURO Conference

Mini EURO Conference (MEC)guidelinesPrinciplesEURO supports Mini EURO Conferences, spe-cialised conferences on a particular promising O.R.theme for a limited audience of specialists. MiniEURO Conferences are a good framework for thespecialists of a particular field of research to par-ticipate in a meeting where the screening of paperscan be more effective and participation in thedebates can be more lively than at larger meetings.

EURO has agreed to support two Mini EUROConferences a year. National Societies, WorkingGroups and O.R. workers can make a proposal toorganise a Mini EURO Conference. It is thereforean instrument that provides opportunities formany members to get involved in the activities ofour Association. Those interested in organisingsuch a conference are requested to complete theenclosed form. All proposals will be submitted tothe EURO Executive Committee.

Financial AssistanceEURO offers financial assistance to the organisersof a Mini EURO Conference for printing a call forpapers (10.000 copies) and a scientific programme(500 copies). The call for papers will be distributedto all EURO members through the National O.R.Societies. This financial assistance is a loan and nota gift. It must be refunded to EURO. EURO is cov-ering no losses, but is requesting no profits. Finan-cial assistance up to 5000 CHF can be obtained forcovering the costs of Eastern European partici-pants to the conference. For applying EURO’s sup-port the budget proposal must be enclosed in theapplication. In the end of the conference the orig-inal receipts with a detailed account of the supportto Eastern European participants must be sent toVice-President 2 of EURO.

Publications of the ProceedingsEURO encourages the organisers to offer theProceedings of a Mini EURO Conference to bepublished in a special issue of EJOR, the EuropeanJournal of Operational Research. However, this hasto be discussed with the Editors of EJOR andapproved by them.

General SupportDeadline for the submission of bids

for the second semester of 2001The purpose of the “General Support funds” is tosupport any activity related to EURO that cannotbe covered by other instruments of EURO. How-ever, the “General Support fund” should notbe used as a support to regular activities ofthe member societies (such as national meet-ings and conferences). Priority will always begiven to:■ bids that give special consideration to the needof students (e.g. organiser of an event related toEURO willing to subsidise the participation of stu-dents),■ bids that give special consideration to the needof organisers of OR events in Central and EasternEurope,■ bids that emanate from a member society ofEURO or organisers of EURO sponsored events ororganisers of events sponsored by a member soci-ety of EURO.

The bids are kept informal. They should howeveralways contain a description of the project and abudget. They should mention the support that hasbeen obtained or solicited from other sources.Although bids emanating from individuals (e.g.students willing to attend a Conference closelyrelated to EURO) are, in principle, acceptable theywill be given a very low priority. They are approvedonly in exceptional cases.

Organisers of events receiving General Supportfunds from EURO are required:■ to publicise the support of EURO in the docu-ments of the Conference,■ to produce a report on the use of the funds nolater than 3 months after the event,■ to accompany their report by all original receipts.

Bids for “EURO General Support funds” are exam-ined twice a year on a competitive basis. For 2001 thebudget allocated to this instrument is CHF 15 000.We plan to spend half of this money for the sec-ond semester of 2001 (bids are not restricted toprojects taking place during this period).

For the second semester of 2001, bids should besent to the Secretary of EURO:Alexis Tsoukiàs, LAMSADECNRS, Université Paris Dauphine75775 Paris Cedex 16, FranceTel.: (direct) +33144054401 - Fax: +33144054091E-mail: tsoukias@lamsade.dauphine.frbefore 1 June 2001

Would you be so kind as to publicise this announce-ment and deadline as widely as possible ?
