Nigeria (amtlich englisch Federal Republic of Nigeria Bundesrepublik Nigeria) ist ein Bundesstaat in Westafrika, der an Benin, Niger, Tschad und Kamerun grenzt. Es ist mit Abstand das bevölkerungsreichste Land Afrikas und versucht sich nach Jahren der Militärdiktatur an seiner Demokratisierung und wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung. Nigeria konnte seine reichen Erdölvorkommen aufgrund von Korruption bisher nicht zur erfolgreichen Armutsbekämpfung nutzen.Es ist ein Land mit großer kultureller Vielfalt: Im ganzen Land werden 514 verschiedene Sprachen und Idiome gesprochen. Außerdem sind hier zahlreiche westafrikanische Religionen anzutreffen. Allerdings herrschen auch oftmals mit Gewalt ausgetragene ethnische Konflikte zwischen dem muslimischen Norden und dem mehrheitlich christlich-animistischen Süden.

Nigeria officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is a federal constitutionalrepublic comprising 36 states and its Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The country islocated in West Africa and shares land borders with the Republic of Benin in thewest, Chad and Cameroon in the east, and Niger in the north. Its coast in the southlies on the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean. igeria is often referred to as the “Giant of Africa“” due to its large population and economy. With approximately 174 million inhabitants, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the seventh most populous country in the world. The country is inhabited by over 500 ethnic groups, of which the three largest are the Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba. Regarding religion, Nigeria is roughly divided in half between Christians, who live mostly in the southern and central parts of the country, and Muslims, concentrated mostly in the northern and southwestern regions. A minority of the population practice religions indigenous to Nigeria, such as those native to Igbo and Yoruba peoples.
